cache_dirs - an attempt to keep directory entries in RAM to prevent disk spin-up
I had a problem with cache_dirs. I was seeing some errors about duplicates show up on the console. So I tried to shutdown but it locked up and I had to to a power off to get it to shutdown. I tracked it down to having duplicate files in some shares (ok, my bad). When I commented out cache_dirs in the go script the problem stopped. I'm guessing the duplicates which are mostly big iso files are there because I was doing some copy speed testing to the /mnt/drive#/... and inadvertantly created the issue myself. But why the system wouldn't shut down I don't know. Maybe too much memory was used up in a loop or something or who knows. Something to look into Joe. #/boot/cache_dirs -w -u -d 3 -e "lost+found" -e "*iTunes*" -e "ftproot"

Temperature based fan speed control?
I'm looking into different ideas for controling fans but until something I really like comes along I'm using this 5 fan temperature controller. I just installed it yesterday and so far it's working. I wanted to be able to set the temp threshhold for each fan but so far I'm not sure how. The manual is printed in 2 pitch font. I had to use a magnifying glass to read it. But the quality of the parts is fine however and I guess that's what counts. Anyway, I have one taped onto my parity drive and the temp readout matches what unRAID says the temp is so it's accurate. It has 5 fan connectors and 5 temp probes. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811992005

HDSentinel hard drive monitoring tool
Has anyone tried HDSentinel for hard drive health tests? I just came across it today and they have a free command line version for linux that I downloaded and ran on unRAID. It's telling me one of my drives has a health rating at 40%. I'm looking for reviews of this tool to see how reliable it is. Also, I downloaded the windows version and it's really interesting so far. http://www.hdsentinel.com/download_hard_disk_sentinel.php
