noobie docker setup guide
This guide is a bit outdated now. Please have a look at Spaceinvader one's video about docker. It is current and quite detailed. P.S. He is spaceinvaderone here on the UnRAID forums. Video guides are at the bottom of this post. Well I just figured out how to set up docker and I am completely new to docker so I decided to make a quick guide to help other people who are new. p.s. this is for unraid 6.0 beta 10 and up i think, correct me if I am wrong but i think that is when the UI changed to make docker easier. Step 1 go to the docker tab in the unraid gui. should look like this. Step 2 where it says Docker image you want to put the path where you want to store your docker image. I think most people put it on there cache drive, but you don't have to. I put mine on a separate user share that I use for only plugins and docker. as of beta 14 you can no longer have your docker image in a user share, so when you make a share make it cache only and the path will be /mnt/cache/SHARENAME/docker/docker So if you wanted it on a user share that you made the path would be /mnt/user/SHARENAME/docker/docker Just replace "SHARENAME" with what ever your share is called. here is a picture to show what I am talking about. Step 3 Set the size image you want, 10Gb-15Gb should be big enough for what ever you need it for. Here is the file it creates after you press start. Step 4 press the start button Step 5 https://github.com/gfjardim/docker-containers/tree/templates ^ add this link to the repositories area, and click save. Look at the very first picture on this thread. Step 6 Well now you have docker set up and its time to add a "container" or application or what ever you want to call it. I will start with plex media server as quite a few people use it I assume Click the big green add button you should see a window that pops up that looks like this. press select a template and scroll down to plex media server and select it. Step 7 under the path section which looks like this. click in the part where it says /mnt/user/appdata/plexmediaserver and a folder navigator will open up under it. You want to navigate to the docker folder you made earlier. Also you can just type in the path if you want, it should be /mnt/user/YOURSHARENAME/docker/apps/plexmediaserver/ The "/apps/plexmediaserver/" part will add the folder, apps in the docker folder and a plexmediaserver folder inside apps. so click "user" then what ever you named your share, mine is "Automation" then click on the "docker" folder. After that you want to type in /apps/plexmediaserver/ so basically after all this it should look like this. Step 8 So what this step does is give the plexmediaserver container access to your media. you want it to type /tv in the first box and then navigate to the folder where your tv shows are located, in my case that is in the share "Media" then in the folder "TV" then click Add Path. You want to do the same thing for movies. so it would be /movies in the box on the left and the path to your movies in the right box If you want to add music just do the same thing as above. Step 9 This step is easy, just click apply at the bottom and let everything install. Now after it says it completed just close the window and it should look like this, minus all the other apps I have installed. I can't remember if plex starts right away or not but if the writing under the plex symbol is green then it is running, if its red then click on it and press start. Next click on the plex symbol and click webUI (it may take a few seconds for plex to start so if nothing comes up wait a couple seconds and refresh the page) and it will bring you to the plex web interface and thats it, you have set up docker and installed plex. when adding tv shows or movies to your plex server, when you click add folder, just scroll down and you should see tv just click that and you should see all of your shows. If this is still confusing I can make a video on how to do it if anyone wants me to. Hope this helps some people. Video guides OwnCloud - http://tinyurl.com/no9hekb

UnRaiding an Apple Xserve RAID
New highest temp during the pre clear is 37C witch I am happy with, before it was up to 40-41C.

UnRaiding an Apple Xserve RAID
Well here is a smallish update, I decided to make a styrofoam back so that I could have the airflow go in the proper direction and it helped keep the drives about 6C lower and I only have two fans in the case. One right behind the backplane where the drives are and one exhaust in the styrofoam. Here are some pictures. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

UnRaiding an Apple Xserve RAID
It takes a long time to get everything connected right. Hopefully you can go off of what I did and save a little time. I installed most of the other drives so that air flow isn't as good (how it will normally be filled with drives) and the drives have gone up from 33c to 35c while preclearing the drives. I will do a couple writes and reads after the preclear is done and report temps then. Also the temperature in the room is about 72F.

UnRaiding an Apple Xserve RAID
So a little bit of an update, my unraid server the way it was was kind of messy so I decided to start all over on all of my data. I started preclearing all of my disks and before I put a fan next to the drives my temps on two drives were around 40c to 42c and after I put a fan on it, they went down to 33c at the moment. So if this is any indication of how hot these drives are going to run with a fan when I finish it this is a good thing, I am happy with those temps. This is also with only 5 drives in so I am about to put the rest of the drives in to see how the temperature fluctuates. Ill keep you guys posted. ps. pictures will be coming soon.

I don't have any fans on it at all right now so they aren't getting any air flow. I will be adding some after I get everything working properly. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

UnRaiding an Apple Xserve RAID
Well I finally got it up and running minus one disk that is connected to the controller which I think isn't working. The temps in the one picture are with two computers scanning the media that is on it. I will try a writing temp test when I figure out why the controller isn't working. UnRaiding an Apple Xserve RAID
Well I have been having some problems getting my drives to be recognized and I am not sure if it is my motherboard or a bad solder connection but I have 4 out of my 5 drives being recognized now and after I get the 5th one working I can clean up all the wires and close it up. Here is a picture of me testing everything out, and kind of where everything is going to go. I will be adding fans when I finish. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

So am I, I'm hoping the WD Green drives will stay cool enough. With the not so good air flow I'm predicting. Awesome! I will be looking for your build thread soon then. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

UnRaiding an Apple Xserve RAID
Just a small update, I got one side of the backplane wired up for power and 1 and a half sata cables done. I am waiting on some more sata cables to be delivered so I can finish up all the data drives and test everything out!! Here are the sata cables. And here are the power cables. UnRaiding an Apple Xserve RAID
Ya that makes sense. I will try that out as one of my fan layouts. And I am using a CPU Motherboard combo and I don't remember what it is. I know it is a single core 1.5 ghz CPU though. And it's a mini itx motherboard. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

UnRaiding an Apple Xserve RAID
Well I have a little more progress to show you guys. I cleared out the back where the power supplies, fans, and raid cards were so that I can put my motherboard and power supply in. Also I took some measurements for anyone wanting to know what kind of motherboard can fit back there. laid out my components, not sure about the fans though I think I have to figure out a way to put more in there. you have just over 11 inches (wide) of space for a motherboard if you are using a standard ATX power supply. You have just over 10 inches (deep) of space for a motherboard, but that doesn't leave any room for connections to the backplane. A micro ATX motherboard is 9.6 x 9.6 so you have room for one of those and if you have a little bit smaller power supply you can fix a full size ATX motherboard which is 12 x 9.6 I believe. Here are the original power button and alert/mute button that I will use for power and reset I will also use the LEDS in them for power and HDD activity. I am not sure what to use the mute button for yet, maybe I will think of something later.

UnRaiding an Apple Xserve RAID
That is my plan! I'm hoping that unraid expands the drive limit to 31 so I can use all the drive space available (3 more in the Xserve I believe). And I will be sure to post the led stuff once I figure it out haha. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

UnRaiding an Apple Xserve RAID
at the moment 14 drives will be ok for me as I only have about 12TB of data on 3TB drives. but My plan is to at some point buy another one of these and then move the motherboard to a regular xserve and just have two of the xserve raids for hard drives. So it will look like this with one more set of drives at the bottom.

UnRaiding an Apple Xserve RAID
the only limitation it has is that it can only hold 14 drives, With the way I am setting this up it is just like plugging the drive into a sata port so if your motherboard/controller can handle 4TB drives you could use those. It isn't using any of the original RAID setup, I am just using the hardware that is there to pass the signals along. (hope this makes sense) Thanks! I am working on getting the other hard drive carriers set up for sata. and waiting for some connectors for the pins in the back. Also thanks for letting me know what the light is

UnRaiding an Apple Xserve RAID
I started a new thread with my 2.0 server case. You can find it here. Alright first off I would like to say sorry for how long this first post is, but I wanted to make it as in depth as I can so that if anyone else wants to do this the can have sort of a guide on what I did. So I built an UnRaid server about a year ago to hold all of my media and I love it. at first it was just a bunch of cables and components laying on a table, then I built a case because I don't really like the looks of any server cases on the market (except the Apple Xserve RAID) and most were pretty expensive. The case I built wan't anything great, it was just 20 dollars worth of angled aluminum and rivets from Lowes that I had put together. (I will post pictures of it tomorrow) So I thought to myself that I could probably modify an Apple Xserve RAID to do what I want (all of them are IDE by the way), so I started looking on the internet if anyone had done this before and I couldn't find anything on it so I said "ehh maybe I won't do it" but then I was looking on eBay and saw a great deal on one ($150 free shipping) so I bought it and said "If I can't do it, at least it will look cool still." So I got the Xserve and started taking it apart to see what I needed to do, I figured that I could use the old IDE connections to run my power and data SATA cables through, and I was right. If you know how hot swappable server cases work these are the "carriers" (sorry don't know what they are actually called) the HDDs sit in. Here is what the boards looked like before and after my modification. HDD "carriers" Left: IDE Right: (modded) SATA "carriers" with covers off Left: IDE Right: (modded) SATA Closeup of IDE Closeup of (modded) SATA Now only 13 more drives to go So Before I just went and soldered on my cables to random places I first mapped where those connections would end up. I am going to try and explain the following pictures as best as I can so that you can under stand it, if you guys don't get it just say so and maybe I will make a video and try to explain it better. So the first picture is of the sata cable soldered to the "HDD carrier board" which is plugged into the backplane, I will call is plug the "HDD carrier plug" as it is a custom plug that apple made I assume. You can see in the background the other connections for the total 14 drives this case holds. The second picture is of the back side of the "HDD carrier plug" and the pins marked with orange are where the 4 data wires of the SATA plug go. The 4 ground wires of the SATA plug I don't have marked in the picture. The third picture is the cluster of pins where the original RAID controllers of the server connected to the drives. If you look closely (at the top center of the cluster) you can see 4 pins marked with orange and that is where the 4 marked on the back of the "HDD carrier plug" go to. In the background you can see that I marked the data pins on the rest of the "HDD carrier plugs". I am going to use these pins and connect a sata cable to them and that will plug into my motherboard. P.S. you can click on the image to get the full sized one if you want to zoom in. Here are some pictures of the front of the case and what I want to do with it. Front of the server case, you can see the 13 HDD "carriers" (I had taken one out). Close up of the center columns of LEDs which are for network activity, but because I am doing this modification that won't work so I plan on repurposing it so that the left side is power usage (each LED will be a certain number of watts, I'm thinking 20 watts per LED) and the right side I'm not sure what I'm going to do with yet. Suggestions are welcome! This is a closeup of the status LEDS, there is one on the left side and one on the right side, from left to right they are power, fans, temperature, and I'm not sure. And again because I am doing this mod they will not work unless I make them work with an arduino or something like that, which I plan to do of corse. You can also see the green "ok" LED on the HDD carriers and the other led on the carrier is an activity LED I will have to do some custom stuff to make these work correctly of corse This is all I have so far but I will be posting some more pictures and progress soon!! And please feel free to ask for any additional pictures of what I have so far!
