  1. @itimpi - I searched online and the view was that these sorts of numbers meant the drive was failing - so I'm very glas for your input. I have no idea about such things as I been very lucky with HDD's What I do know is that writing to that drive takes a long time to start (the very first write) - usually the network timeout happens first - but the unRAID gui shows the hard is being constantly read - but NOT written too. This has been troubling, but I thought it was something to do with the reiserfs system and large drives. Writing to this drive can take many minutes to start, but once it has, all consecutive write seems to happen without a hitch...until the day I start a write. I have sent the smart info to my purchase store and requested a replacement. Time will tell if they think its suspect. Really appreciate the help.. I should have a spare drive on tap - but you know how it is 🙄
  2. Greetings, Not sure if this is in the right place but it did say "Disk Issues" Just upgraded to V6. Was reviewing the smart info on my drives. I've never been able to see the smart info for 6Tb drives in V5 under unmenu (and couldn't seem to update unmenu). Seagate ST6000VN0041 - 6tb drive @ 6188 hours showing... Raw read error rate = 55158135 Command timeout = 4295032833 Hardware ECC recovered = 55158135 This seems bad and searching seems to indicate the same thing. It is still under warranty (supposedly had 3 years) (Actually my newest and least full drive) The smart info is included. Appreciate any assistance. Thanks Question, if the HDD fails during a parity check...will that void the parity info? I ask this because I am due for another parity check and probably would be a good idea if I need it to rebuild this drive. tower-smart-20190815-1904.zip
  3. Frank - Thanks for the help They are in the Disk Share Security settings (one place I noticed them). If I read the help properly, I think they are for copying security settings between drives so you don't have to change them all individually. That help thingee is great. I'll have to remember it. One downside is that there is no help on the users page. I'm still trying to understand this part of it. I never played with this at all in V5. Okay...so I set one of my disk shares (I always write directly to the disk so I control where everything is) to secure. When I tried to write to that disk via Windows explorer, I was told via a dialog box that I needed permission. How do I get permission?? I am guessing I have to set up a user to do this?? Once I do that, I'm assuming I'll have to give myself credentials or something. How does my windows machine know what user I am? I suppose I have to tell it via the dialog box. Okay, I just set up a "user" and figured out how it works. I gives me the option on the windows dialog box to remember login info. Should I check that box? Will my windows machine remember them across a reboot? If I change these settings I'm going to have to go and change my little ion htpc settings to access the shares. That'll be interesting. Haven't looked in there for years. This is why I don't touch things when its working. 👴👴 👴 Being this is tough! Thanks Frank for the explanation of the security things above. It helped. I think I'm slowly getting it sorted. Really appreciated. Cheers PS - these double scroll bars on the forum are wicked!
  4. Wow...never thought it would still be available (never looked though). Looks like I'll have to import though as I can't find any locally. Be nice to have some extra RAM - now available that unRAID is 64bit. Can I use what's in the server already and just add more, or should I get new RAM that is all the same brand (type)?? How did you know what MB I have? I thought I had it on a signature, but I don't see that on this forum
  5. Hey Frank. Yeah...quite stressful. V5 was working perfectly for me (for years), so I wasn't keen to touch it - but I read Tom's comment on V5, so thought it was time to get it sorted. I have my head around most things. Just the security side of it now. Although, with that in place (while more secure) makes managing the system much more difficult. Hell...reading about having root pasworded means you have to log in and out of the unRAID webgui. And ...you would have to do this every time you write to the server wouldn't you. Sounds damn painful - but probably not as painful as someone messing with my content. I'm hoping my 2Gb of RAM is enough. Not sure I could find more cause my server is old (2007). It is a basic NAS. Thanks for the insight into the "GUI Upgrade". I'll make sure the array is stopped, then give it a try. I guess it will crash if there isn't enough RAM to sustain it?? No longer using the Promise TX4 cards. Made my system a lot slower, and when HDD's got large enough, I've managed to reduce the number (16xHDD's down to 8x) so I no longer needed them. They are still in the server though. I do use one of them if I want to preclear a new drive - but that hasn't happened it years. However...in saying that, I'll be up for a new HDD soon, and I guess I'll want to use it then. All my HDD's run off the MB's SATA ports (8x). Eventually, I'd like to get down to 1x parity, 3x HDD's - but large drives are so expensive here in New Zealand. Seems at this stage I am through the scary part of it - thank goodness. Time will tell. My only issue now is trying to figure out how to use the "user" part of unRAID. Not sure I fully understand these - or how they should be set up. I'm worried if I change something now, my system will stop working and it will be difficult to write, (or even read) the server from other computers. I'm afraid I don't really like to experiment - as if I stuff it up, I don't have anyone that can sort it out for me. Guess I'll have too 🙄. One question I do have...ON the right-hand side of the GUI (on numerous pages) toward the top of the page there is a little box (or two) with arrows either side of it that says something like select (with a dropdown box). My server isn't on right now to see it. What are these for?? Thanks for the help. Always appreciated.
  6. @itimpi - you sound like a real techhead 🥰 . I'd like to be, but too expensive for a pensioner 😭. Everything is more wife friendly as well. Yep...did my first power button press last night. The system beeped a couple of times and the server was off really quickly - much faster than V5 using C+A+D. I will get used to it. My server has both keyboard and monitor, but I rarely use them...and my phone is off at 7:30pm. Just as easy to press the button. Now...if you could tell me how to turn it OFF via the gui of KodiTV - then that would be something. I vaguely remember there was a script around years ago that let you do this. Not sure what happened to it. Yes...I plan on just running a basic NAS. Don't need it to be any more than that, Notifications (I think they are on), but I don't have email notifications set up. Should I? I have installed CA (used it to install cache_dirs) Was looking a Fix Common Problems thingee last night as well, but worried about my 512mb USB...and only 2Gb RAM. My MB is old (2007) so doubt I can find suitable RAM now. Really appreciate the help. Cheers.
  7. @itimpi, Really appreicate the insight here and the time you've taken to comment. I haven't really followed the release of V6 at all, so it was a major upgrade for me - one I found rather stressful to be honest. The info you need is ALL over the forum and various places. Guess I'm going to have to try Ctrl+Alt+Delete on my own. I don't want to have to fire up my personal pc, or the server monitor etc to shut down the server via CLi (or gui), so I used Ctrl+Alt+Delete as part of the Clean Powerdown plugin exclusively. I hope it works, but I guess a parity check will be the result it it doesn't - or perhaps a reboot. I've found V6 to be somewhat complex to V5. I run a very simple setup (that's how I want it) and now there seems to be several orders of complexity over V5. I guess in time I will become increasingly familiar with it. I really do struggle to understand some of the terms and how they work, and I don't like experimenting because there is always the concern I will screw something up. Yeah...I'll check out the help in V6. Forgot about that. 1 more question if I may. The "system" folder added to one of my HDD's has a 20+gb docker?? img file in there. Do I need it? Again...thanks muchly
  8. Greetings, Bigger USB drive failed to boot in unRAID?? Tried both USB Creator and manual method. It was exactly the same type of USB drive as the original (except 2gb). Bios was set to boot from USB. Very strange?? Reverted to Pro2 512mb USB and it booted into unRaid on first try (using the clean upgrade manual method). Managed to figure things out mostly. Can someone help me with the questions below please. Questions... 1 - Clean powerdown (now part of unRaid 6) -- Does Ctrl+Alt+Delete still do a clean powerdown of the server?? 2 - After everything was setup and running I found some extra folders on one of my HDD's > appdata, domains, isos, and system. I assume these are meant to be there?? Can they be deleted?? Can they be hidden?? (This last option would be okay) 3 - Settings>Disk Settings>Filesystem defaults to xfs. Is this right? My entire system is reiserfs. I was worried when I went to change the disk spindown timer that clicking the apply button would mess things up. Would it have?? I changed the dropdown to reiserfs and clicked apply. 4 - Flash is exported and public - want make it no and private. Changing this in the gui makes in invisible in Windows Explorer. Do I have to set it back in the gui to make changes to the flash?? (Seems it doesn't ask for a password - should it??) 5 - The User / Disk Shares are visible as well and currently public. I want to make them secure. If I change to secure in the Gui...will it ask for a password?? Do I have to set them back every time to write to them?? Can the shares be made password accessible? Is this advisable?? I don't like passwords cause they have messed with me several times before - and cause a lot of effort and stress to gets things working again Many thanks
  9. Hello there, Long time unraid user finally realising it's time to upgrade - especially after reading about the possibility of end of line discussions for v5. I am running version 5.0. It's been perfect for years and obviously I am really nervous about touching it. I'm somewhat long in the tooth as well and the mind isn't quite what is once was ...so I need some hand-holding!! I have read a lot of posts (most make me more nervous) as V6 seems so much more complex than V5. A lot of the posts are years old (even more nervous) and I'm uncertain what is still relevant. In fact...the more I read the more the heads spins Wow...things have changed a lot! I am running the following plugins...unmenu (only for mymain-smart), Clean powerdown (ctrlALtDelete), apcupsd (for clean shutdown of tower at loss of power - 5 mins using apc ups) and cache_dirs. I only have 2gb RAM. It appears I have a 64bit chip (saw the Im in the output thingee) I believe some of these things are now included in V6?? using something called a docker?? Don't really understand what this is. Or how they work. Are they difficult to setup? Or...are the plugins installed differently? I have two pro keys (2 USB drives - so I can use the 2nd one as the V6 unit and keep the original V5 USB safe to return to it if needed.) I am running 8xHDD's all controlled from the MB. My USB drive is only 512mb. so... 1 - Seems Tom wrote a plugin to do the upgrade from V5 to V6. Does this still work? This sounds like the easy option?? Does this freshen the go file? 2 - Clean Install appeals to me - refreshes the usb and you keep only V6 relevant files on the usb. 3 - I assume my pro keys will work without the need to download (apply for a new set??). (seems they will work) 4 - Where do I download the latest V6 version from? (found it) 5 - What am I going to be presented with? (Can someone post a screenshot so I know what I'll get (or a link)) 6 - Seems the recommendation is to leave unmenu uninstalled. Is this still true? Is there a replacement for the smart part of it? 7 - Seems Powerdown is now a part of unRaid - but...does ctrl+Alt+delete still cleanly powerdown the server?? 8 - It would seem that you can now upgrade your USB drive to a larger one via the "USB Creator" software. Does this mean I can use a bigger USB (mine is only 512mb) then use the "USB Creator" software (or legacy Install) using my existing key? Thanks in advance for any assistance.
  10. As a follow-up to this issue, I have found that the S3 state is enabled in the bios. However...my on board network died and has been replaced with a network card. I am not sure if the bios setting affects the new card or not. Using "ethtool eth 0" I have verified that the card is in fact WOL ready and displays the following as found here...https://wiki.lime-technology.com/Setup_Sleep_(S3)_and_Wake_on_Lan_(WOL) Supports Wake-on: pumbg Wake-on: g This seems to support that WOL is in fact available and turned on. I found this...https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/288717/how-to-disable-wake-on-lan that states how to turn it off. Can someone please confirm this works in unraid linux. Will it create any other issues? Do I still have to turn the bios setting off?? I assume I do. The key to enter the bios on my setup was "Del." Thanks.
  11. Next time I boot it up, I'll have a look - sometimes it all happens too fast to catch it. Probably should record all the bios settings at the same time just in case Really appreicate the pointers.
  12. It's less than 5 years old...I would say about two or less. What surprised me most was the server was powered fully down. I don't sleep it. I guess I have to look at the bios to see if wol settings have changed. Been so long, I don't remember what key to press??
  13. Thanks Bob for the input. Any way I can check this. It had a new battery more recently than not. Can I tell the battery level from the bios?
  14. Greeetings, Just sitting there checking my emails this morning and my unraid server started up on its own accord. How can this happen? Never had this happen before that I can recall?? Wasn't even aware it COULD start up on its own. There is NO wol configured and it is connected to an UPS that is fully charged. The server was fully powered down the night before. This has got me worried. Any suggestions. Thanks.
  15. This could be a possiblity - hence why I posted here. I don't know enough about it to figure it out. Can I increase the swap file size on my unraid server (adding more RAM is difficult). Drive space for virtual memory would be okay?? Not convinced it's the server as this never happened on my old machine.
  16. Hey Squid, I don't use DVDShrink as a decrypter (haven't for so long I can't remember). I use it because its easy to use for writing to DVD Folder or ISO and most importantly, in reauthor mode it allows me to cut the video at an "I" frame. But more importantly, I can batch write with it using Multishrink.
  17. I was using -90%. I only trialed it using one instance of DVDS. Not sure in can do many instances, or whether you point it at the exe and it does all instances of that program. Need further testing. Thought I might see what is out there as far as fixes before going down that path.
  18. I did find that site, and while it helped a lot, there doesn't appear to be any real conclusions as to there being something that can be done about this. It is the only real thread I could find about this issue, of which I am somewhat surprised, as I would've thougth more people would be using DVDSrhink, so more people would have this problem. This never happened on my old machine - and DVDshrink would buffer it properly - even though unraid couldn't keep up. So is there something on my new machine causing this?? or is it just too damn fast?? This doesn't happen when I write FROM a USB attached HDD. Obviously, the throughput is limited by USB and Shrink works as it should. Having to sit there and watch every write then pause it would be painful. So... what other software do people use to write DVD Folders to iso that can be batch run?? Shrink and multishrink are just so easy. Unraid is mostly about media - so you all have to be writing out to unraid with something that is simple to use and can be simply automated?? Thanks for the input.
  19. Greetings, I have an unusual issue (only partly unraid related) that I need some help with please if someone can offer it I have just built a new desktop computer. It's my first one in 10 years - stepping from XP to Win 10 . It's like going from flying a kite to driving the space shuttle! Anyway, the problem is DVDshrink gets an "Out of Error" message while writing out to my unraid server (see image below). This is not a HDD storage related issue (there is huge space on my server and my internal drives) I've tried to figure this out - spent a great deal of time - searched a lot, but there are only a few posts online and they are really old (most prior this 3.2 version). One thing that was mentioned was "Memory Leak" but I know nothing about that. Anyway, what is happening is that DVDShrink seems to run flat out (there is a little indicator that states the buffer memory on the output panel) and this fills up to about 1300Mb and then it crashes. Writing anywhere else (across my internal drives etc) the buffer seems to regulate (go up and down), but writing out to the unraid server the buffer just keeps growing in size and then fails with this error. I assume the unraid server is not fast enough to keep up??, but this never happened on my XP machine and it was reasonably fast also. I can pause DVDShrink while it's writing out to the server, then start it again, and that way it doesn't fault - but I don't want to have to physically watch all my writes! Now I can't believe I'm the only one suffering this issue (there are a lot of fast machines out there and I'm certain others use DVDShrink (not to decrypt). I use it for ripping, but mostly for writing from DVD Folder on the HDD out to ISO's on my server. You can open multiple instances of DVDShrink and then use a little program called "MultiShrink" to fire them all off as a batch run. It's worked flawlessly for a decade. Now it fails on my new machine. Does anyone know why and if so, how I can fix it and if I can fix it??? Things I have learned... There is a small prog. called BES that throttles the CPU. This allows DVDShrink to run without error, but I have to really crank the BES setting down and it is really slow going. I have only tried this with a single instance (not sure if it will work on multiple instance of DVDS. The above error doesn't happen if I write from a USB HDD dock attached to my new computer (USB can feed DVDShrink enough info fast enough maybe). While I could live with this, I have to keep turning the damn thing on and off and I don't get to use my two internal HDD's that I write between. I could switch to something else, but I don't know what that would be and if it can batch write easily. DVDS and MuiltiS work perfectly together and oh so easy. Perhaps a cache drive would help in my server, but I write directly to my disk shares and am not sure if that is how it works. Really appreciate any insight you can offer. Thanks.
  20. Hey Gary, Any chance you could detail what you did? I also have this on my list, but not sure exactly what I should be doing. DOn't know anything about permissions. How to I set them on the server? It needs to be easy as I'm writing to it often, but usually only to one disk. What about setting up a user profile for each other component on my network? I assume if this is done, I'll have to have a password for each device to access the server? Makes me somewhat nervous changing stuff I don't fully understand. Willing to learn though. Thanks.
  21. Thx Rob, Lets hope it was actually a "ghost in the machine" that has now gone away I got better things to do than isolate a network issue . It's always nice to suss something out though - especially when one is a little scared of it Thx again for the help. Should there be a next time..."I'll be back!.." but without the muscles
  22. Rob, I couldn't tell one electronic thingee from another as far as the card is concerned. The card has been working fine. This "video freeze" is a new thing - twice in one week. The onboard realtek nic worked fine since 2007 (it died last year). I seem to get more issues with the router. I've had several over the years - the latest came with an ISP package - not as good as some of the others I've had - but the price made the deal too good to miss out on. The previous router allowed me to reserve an IP address (which I set for a static server one). A static IP caused me issues with the new router (the server sometimes started without an IP), so I switched to dchp and it's been fine. I never grew up with computers - came to them late in life - so I struggle to understand a lot of it. I try, but I don't have the underlying knowledge you get when you grow up with them. I see kids today doing all sorts of amazing stuff with them . I've acepted I'll never have that understanding. C'est la vie! So far I've managed to sort my issues (with some stress :'( ). Probably my biggest probelm is knowing where to look for the problem - and what questions to ask using the correct terminlogy. A lot of it takes oodles of time - something I just don't have with all ones responsibilites. Really appreciate the help. Some hand-holding is definitely needed on my end I haven't upgraded to V6 because V5 does everything I need - and upgrading and changing things makes me break out in a cold sweat!
  23. I can't guarantee it's an intel. I'm pretty sure it was this card https://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?itemID=366099 Trying this cmd "lspci -vnn >/boot/lspci.txt" says "Command not found" I'll give the ps cmd a go next time it happens. Do you think this is definitely a server problem, or could something else be causing this? Both times it happened shortly after waking my HTPC from sleep and starting a video (some minutes after through).
  24. I realised this after I had uploaded the cut version DOH!! How many packets would be a lot? Currently, of 214000 odd packets it shows 405 have dropped. And...I do have an Intel netwrok card - the onboard one died some time back. I tired this ps -e thingee and it displayed a long list on stuff. I am assuming I do this after the issue? What is the best way to get it to a file? Via outty (cut&Paste)? I've been trying to understand why the SMB shares would go down (permissions??) I can't access them via my own puter, but I can ping the server - which is odd. It's also a pain rebooting the router doesn't reset the issue. This is a first for me - losing the shares - but still having a ping connection to the server. There are lots of things in the chain (HTPC, 2x network switch, router and server). But because I can't access the SMB shares on the server, I guess it is a server issue?? Finally, I just found a "Processes" link in the V5 Gui that looks a lot like the ps -e output? Thx for the help
