  1. Folks

Its come to my attention that i'm running a fairly old O/S (6.9.2 dates to spring 2021).

    Its time i upgraded.

Q1) can i migrate DIRECT from 6.9.2 to 6.12.6 ?  Or do i need to take it in various steps ??

Q2) reading the 6.12.6 notes, it says theres a known issue with the RealTek NIC 8125.

    My m/b hosts a RealTek 8111.

Am i to assume that i'm ok to proceed, or do i need to include myself in that known issue ??

    cheers

    Richard

Due to a slip-up by my supplier, my x2 new parity disks arrived on different days.

When the first disk arrived, i bunged into the server, and rebuilt parity.  Done.

Now the second parity disk has arrived, and i have allocated it to its slot, and we are doing another parity sync.

Will UnRaid do some sort of background process now, that says "parity 1 - you handle this stuff, and parity 2 - you handle other stuff" ?????

    Need some advice.

This morning i physically removed an old (small 1.5TB) drive (disk2).
I have already got a copy of its contents (on new disk10), so i'm happy to pull it out.
I replaced the old disk2 with a brand new (6TB) drive.

UnRaid prompted me to format it, so i did.
Then i clicked on 'mount'.  That seemed ok.
I then allocated my new disk to the old slot (Disk 2)
I then clicked 'Start' to bring the array online.
    The 'mount disks' process started.
Now i appear to be 4% through a parity sync/data rebuild.

To be honest, i dont need a data rebuild.
All i wanted to end up with was a formatted & available 6TB disk.

Can i just cancel the parity sync/data rebuild ????

If yes, do i need to undertake other steps ??

    Diagnostics & screenshots attached.

  4. Apandey, thx for your response.

As it happens, i awoke this morning & suddenly realised i had made a mistake.

Although my data was originally on disk2, i had also started using disk4 more recently.

In the rush last night of trying to find certain business data, i completely forgot.

Although i am embarrassed, i am also hugely relieved to have found my data.

  5. Guys, i need help, please.  And fast.

I seem to have lost a swathe of my data.  And i'm in a panic.

Background is, i installed a new disk (disk 10) in the array last Sunday.  All good.

By Monday morning it was online, so i copied the content of an old disk (disk 2) to the new disk 10.

Plan was...that if the migration was good, i would remove disk2.

On Monday i ran the following command :-

    rsync -r /mnt/DISK2 /mnt/DISK10

All went well, except all the date/time stamps were out of alignment.

On Tuesday i ran the following command :-

    rsync -a /mnt/DISK2 /mnt/DISK10

Now all the date/time stamps were aligned.  Great.

But tonight (Thursday) i happened to go looking for some work files.

About 30% of my work data is missing.

Its not on disk2 and its not on disk10.

Surely these x2 exercises i have run, couldnt cause data loss ????

Can anyone suggest how i get eyes into what has happened ???

  6. Folks

Since Nov 2021 i am seeing loads of these lines in SYSLOG.

    "Nov 11 15:43:30 Tower dhcpcd[1703]: eth0: part of a Router Advertisement expired".

Sometimes x1 per day.  Sometimes multiple examples.

Q1) can someone give me a simple explanation of what RA is ??

Q2) do i leave these alone, or should i be taking action ??

    Thanks in advance

    Richard

Guys, i have never used user shares on my UnRaid system.

Since 2009 i have used a disk share model exclusively.

I like having an exact location for my music, video & data.

    I’m not a power user.

    I run Plex & a few utilities.

It works for me, and i’m happy.

Is this ‘mover - array devices not mounted’ thing related to user shares ???

  8. Folks, i keep seeing these same two lines in my SYSLOG.

Can someone tell me how i resolve them ???

    Dec 10 02:13:20 Tower kernel: traps: Plex Media Scan[4781] general protection fault ip:1479cbff07a6 sp:1479c6cb5888 error:0 in ld-musl-x86_64.so.1[1479cbfe0000+53000]

Dec 10 03:40:01 Tower root: mover: array devices not mounted

(as far as i know, all my disks are mounted & working fine - flash, parity, cache, data disks)

  9. Folks, i installed a new drive in my array in April (disk4).

I thought all had gone well with the disk addition, until i saw a red X beside the drive when using the GUI this morning.

Says 'device is missing (Disabled), contents emulated'

I read a similar post on the forum by Barnito, from April 2020.

I followed some advice from that post - reboot & see if the drive goes back online.

Having rebooted, my new drive is showing up as 'unassigned' and can choose 'Mount'

    That worries me :-

    1) does it suggest that UnRaid thinks the drive is empty ?

    2) might 'mounting' drive re-formatting ??

I DO NOT want to lose that drive. Its data, both personal & business.

    Whats your advice ?

    A) would i try to copy the data off the drive, since its currently being emulated ?

    B) would i go ahead and mount the unassigned drive to my disk4 slot, in the hope it doesn't re-format ?

    C) anything else ?

  10. 6 of the disks are straight into the motherboard.

Two expansion cards each host another 4 disks.

So theoretically i can host 14 disks.

You gave me an idea.  If there is indeed some limit on 12 disks, then what if i temporarily disconnect one of my existing disks, and then plug in my new disk ??

But that didnt work either - it threw the same BIOS error.

So i unplugged my new disk, re-connected my other disk, and all is well.

I realise its gonna be my BIOS not UnRaid, but i wondered if any of you guys had seen this before 🙂

I'm gonna go do some Googling around my MB/BIOS (Asus Z170-K).

  11. Folks, i have x10 data disks, x1 parity, x1 cache in my existing setup. Now i’m adding a new 6tb data disk (same as parity). When i add the physical disk (power & sata) then reboot, at the ‘detecting’ line i get a very long pause and the statement “BIOS does not find proper hardware configuration”. Boot stops there. But if i remove the sata cable from the new disk & reboot, all is fine.

Can anyone suggest why UnRaid cant handle my new disk ????

    Richard

  12. Folks, i've always wanted to be able to use a BT keyboard that i have (LogiTech K380) with my UnRaid Tower (v 6.8.3).

When i plug in a cheap BT dongle (branded Nexus) it never lights up.

So i did some research and found this article on Reddit :-

    Bluetooth Keyboard/Mouse : unRAID (reddit.com)

I downloaded & installed NerdPack (blueZ flavour) - all seems fine. If i enter "/etc/rc.d/rc.bluetooth start" the command seems to run fine.  I get returned to a command prompt. But when i then try to run "bluetoothctl" the command hangs, apparently.

Q1) i noticed when installing NerdPack it said it was dependent on Dynamix WebGui.  I cant find anything called that specifically, so i downloaded Dynamix Sys Info, in case that was enough.  Can anyone guide me ??

Q2) can anyone explain why "bluetoothctl" command hangs ??  I believe its meant to launch some interface.

    thanks in advance

    Richard

  13. Johnnie, I don't use 'user shares'.

I have diagnosed that my Windows drive mappings aren't working because of this weird IP address thats getting allocated.

I have now configured UnRaid to use a manual IP allocated by me, and hey presto, my drives work again under Windows.

So my question now is.....why is UnRaid using 169.254.222.38 ?????

  14. Folks, i'm in a sweat here.  My UnRaid NAS was running fine, up till Monday night.  And by fine I mean, I could access drive mappings under Windows no problem. On Monday night I happened to take a look at my UnRaid GUI.  It showed some worrying info :-

    • it showed that Disk9 had some issue.
    • As well as that, I had red messages telling me that an array health report had failed. Attached.
    •  it said that various updates were available.

I updated some apps (plex, splunk, motioneye, community apps).

I believe I also updated UnRaid itself.  I'm now on 6.8.3

I think I was prompted to reboot, which I did.  But after 5 mins, I couldn't load the GUI.

My router could see the NAS drive, but using an odd IP address.  It wasn't using the normal 192.168.1.X but instead was using 169.254.222.X

I left the issue overnight, and tried again Tuesday.  This time I could enter the hostname in a browser, and the GUI would load.

But if I enter the odd IP address in a browser, it fails.

From a Windows PC I can telnet into the Tower, so I know its alive.

I can also ping the Tower from a Windows DOS box.

But none of my Windows drive mappings work.

When I look at the GUI, it shows all my drives greyed out, except flash. Attached.

But I can navigate each disk using the GUI.

Q1) why are all my drives greyed out, under the GUI ?  Presumably this is why my drive mappings don't work.

Q2) why is the NAS adopting an odd IP address ?

Q3) what is this failed health report about ?

Q4) any ideas whats wrong with Disk9 ?

Q5) if I attach my syslog, what info do I need to remove, to keep my details safe ?

Any help would be truly appreciated.

Like everyone else, I dread losing data.
