  1. I’m looking for some advice. I have waffled back and forth and I would like to get some advice from other users. I searched, but I couldn’t find a good answer, probably because this is a pretty specific case… I did see both sides of a similar issue in this thread: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=20510 I have a drive that has two smart categories above the threshold (but has been stable and working well) and is still under warranty, so I got a warranty replacement drive. I also have another drive that that I want to add to the array after I upgraded my parity drive to 4TB. Both drives are pre-cleared. Should I: 1.) Replace the bad drive with the new drive and then let parity rebuild? Then add the additional drive to expand the array? 2.) Do I expand the array with the new drive and copy (or move) all the files over to the new drive, then replace the now empty drive and let parity rebuild? I see advantages of both options. On option 2, if I copy all the files over will I have issues with the same files on both drives that is part of a user share, do I copy to a non-user share, and then move? Do I do a verification (not sure how) after copy? Or should I make some sort of a md5 check sum on all the files and then do a compare after option 1 before I preclear the drive and send it back to WD? For option 1 I would back up the config dir so I can always drop back to the old config if something goes wrong. This is my first drive replacement on unraid (thankful for that), so I am a bit nervous.. hence all my waffling and hand wringing. Thanks for the advice, flips
  2. The western digital 3TB Red drive dropped $20 overnight to $131! This is an all time low on amazon and brings the per gig cost down to 44, which for the red series that is really good. WD Red 3 TB NAS Hard Drive: 3.5 Inch, SATA III, 64 MB Cache - WD30EFRX
  3. Wow. A lot of nice deals lately... It looks like amazon just price matched. Seagate Desktop HDD 4 TB SATA 6Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive ST4000DM000
  4. the external I mentioned above just dropped to down to $150... Seagate Expansion 4 TB 3.0 USB Desktop External Hard Drive (STBV4000100) Wow. I'm totally jealous.. 32 TB.... I have only 200 gigs free... I am in the process of getting 2TB replaced on warranty, so at least I will be adding a measly 2TB soon. flips
  5. Ugh. That sucks. Sorry m8. And if you are going to do a 4TB it takes almost a week for 3 preclears. I don’t usually have a spare, but after waiting a week for that 4TB to finish I grabbed a 4TB spare on the last deal that came up. You could do this external for $160: This isn’t the exact model that I got, so I’m not sure what drive is in it, you might want to research a bit before ordering… Seagate Expansion 4 TB 3.0 USB Desktop External Hard Drive (STBV4000100) flips
  6. You need to be running the beta, but yeah support for 4Tb drives works great. The external drives have been very popular due to the recent sales. But these are a better buy imho due to the warranty...
  7. It looks like Amazon just price matched newegg's 48 hour sale. I still have an unopened 4Tb external drive, I am wishing I would have just waited and gotten one of these instead. Oh well, if I could see the future I would have won the powerball drawing last night Seagate Desktop HDD 4 TB SATA 6Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive ST4000DM000
  8. I saw this post over on slickdeals and I thought I would share. There are a number of items, fans, hdmi cables, computer cases, psu, that are free after rebate. You still have to pay shipping on all the items I checked, so that ends up being a couple of bucks for the fans, and $10 for the computer cases. Not truly free, but still some pretty good deals. http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/95162/newegg-free-after-rebate-select-items-from-hdmi-cables-case-fan-computer-cases-pc-games-accessories-more Update: It looks like they combine shipping for some items, so I was able to get 3 of the 80 mm fans and a flash drive shipped for $2.99 total...
  9. Thanks. I ordered one. I haven't figured out if I want to add drives to my server or start replacing drives, but for $5, i thought what the heck..
  10. That's where I got my first one. Turns out, the sales tax is on the original price, the $180, so tax was about $10 for me. Yep price went back up. The (Now $140!) was from a few days ago. I was happy to see that I got a DM (cooler than DX) from Amazon. flips
  11. I thought I better start a new topic for this price alert since I know a lot of us are using this as our go to drive, including myself. This is a pretty good price for this drive. Just noticed it while I was replying to another topic... Seagate Backup Plus 4 TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STCA4000100 Happy Cinco de Mayo! flips
  12. I've just put one in as parity, I agree they are great drives. The only risk is you don't know what you are going to get before you order, either the DX or DM, if you care. Opening the case is really pretty easy and I think I would probably be able to get it back to get together in case I need to submit a warranty return. I just maxed out my mobo slots, so I now I need to decide if I am going to expand or replace the 2TB drives. I didn't think of selling them on ebay, that's a thought. oooo.... I just check amazon and it looks like they dropped down to $150: Seagate Backup Plus 4 TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STCA4000100 I might need to pick up a spare today...
  13. The seagate 3TB drive just dropped down to $120 overnight. This is the lowest price since black friday. Seagate Barracuda 3 TB HDD SATA 6 Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive ST3000DM001 flips
  14. Actually it is an all time low for that model. That model is a newer 2tb from wd released last summer. I didn’t say it was an all time low for any WD 2TB drive… flips
  15. It looks like Amazon price matched newegg's shellshocker deal... This is an all time low on Amazon for this drive. WD Green 2 TB Desktop Hard Drive: 3.5 Inch, SATA III, 64 MB Cache - WD20EZRX flips
  16. This is through J&R with FS and is about $20 lower than amazon's all time low. I'm not sure how this drive compares in performance, heat, ease of opening, etc... compared to the Seagate, but since the Seagate has been a popular topic of conversation lately I thought I would post this drive as well... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008S94HXG/ref=as_li_ss_til?tag=the05e-20&camp=0&creative=0&linkCode=as4&creativeASIN=B008S94HXG&adid=1H549T8XVPFW1MD1TNWX& flips
  17. after some more searching I answered my own question... It looks like you can attach these right to SATA without voiding the warranty. Nice.. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=25675.msg224226#msg224226
  18. It looks like for a short period of time they dropped to $130 before going back up to $150. Anyone quick enough to grab one for $130?
  19. Valid point, the warranty question. I saw internal Seagates here in Holland with only 1 year warranty. Í you break open these externals I'm afraid the warranty shortens to 0 days. Are the drives in the externals perhaps drives with a high count of reallocated sectors which are masked in firmware? Or are the binned out on some other "problem" while testing? If you want more warranty you have to pay I guess. Or rely on the retailer you bought them from. Yeah the warranty is why I have hesitation as well. Although since they are only a year nowadays I am a bit less worried about it. A year goes pretty quick. My bigger concern would be knowing if they have issues right out of the box. According to this thread it looks like you can do a pre-clear with a SMART report while it is still in the case. Anyone try this with one of these drives? http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=17889.0 flips
  20. It looks like Amazon joined the handful of other retailers that have priced this drive at $140. There's a lot of discussion about the drive in some of the areas of the forums. I have yet to open my 3TB drive that I just picked up for $120. I am wondering if I want to return it and go with this drive instead... $20 for 1 TB is tough to pass up. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00829THLE/ref=as_li_ss_til?tag=the05e-20&camp=0&creative=0&linkCode=as4&creativeASIN=B00829THLE&adid=1KY2Y6ZEP03PN9KJSECB& flips
  21. Here is a sticky on various types of cards: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=12404.0 I need to add two more sata ports before I max out my drive slots. Is there any reason not to go with the monoprice card for $12? I didn't see that chipset with two ports on newegg. flips
  22. The 3TB red just had a price drop overnight bringing it down to the lowest price ever on Amazon. I just bought my first 3TB drive yesterday for $120, which was going to put in as parity, but now I am wondering if I should have gone with the red for just $20 more... Or maybe I just get both.. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008JJLW4M/ref=as_li_ss_til?tag=the05e-20&camp=0&creative=0&linkCode=as4&creativeASIN=B008JJLW4M&adid=1F1ZBKZT4XZHR7NB00F4& flips
