  1. ... can anyone help me on this? I really don't know how to handle this. It's all rather confusing. Cheers, Chris

    20-bay Tower ?

The Lian Li PC-A77 is the one you should have a look at. Supports 4 5in3 cages like the Supermicro M35T. Cheers, Chris
  3. ...okay, that makes sense. It's the disc order what's it all about. So basically it should be also possible to replace the mainboard in my rig with a different one. I mean in the case that my C2SEE brakes one day and I can't get a replacement C2SEE, I could use a different mainboard when I just take care of the disc order. Right? Cheers, Chris
  4. I have another important question. Let's say I initally use the Lian Li EX-H34 drive cages in my rig. I can fit three of those in the Lian Li case I bought on eBay, giving me 12 drive bays in total. Then, in one or two years from now, will it the be possible to simply switch from the EX-H34 cages to the Icy Dock backplanes to have another 3 drive bays? Will this be possible without loosing the data on my array? Will unRAID identify the drives that I used in the EX-34 cages up to this point as the same drives when mounted in the Icy Docks? Is there any particular thing I have to consider? Cheers, Chris P.S.: This is one of the questions I found difficult to phrase as a non native speaker... Hope you understand what I'm asking...
  5. ... I forgot to answer your question: I will only use green drives. Chris
  6. I was considering the 650HX since it is the smallest ('watt wise') PSU thas has 12V single rail design and the modular cable concept. The 620HX and 520HX also have the cable management, but are both 3 rail PSUs. the PSUs you are recommending don't have the modular cables. Makes it a bit messy in the case. The only thing that still frightens me a bit are the 5in3 drive cages. Hopefully the drives don't get to hot... Chris
  7. ... I just bought a used Lian Li PC-A17B on ebay. I couldn't resist, it was quite cheap. I got it for about 60€. I like the simplicity of that design. Unfortunately, this case it is not sold anymore. The 'case question' is answered herewith. My first unRAID server will max out at 15 drives, I brought reason to bear. I guess the corsair 650HX or 750HX will be a good choice for a reliable PSU? Cheers, Chris
  8. In a couple of weeks I will have finished building my unRAID server. Initially it will have 4 x 2TB. When the server is running fine, I will copy all my data to it, which currently is stored on a Synology DS410. After finishing that, I would like to add the 'old' DS410 drives (4 x WD20EARS without jumper) to my unRAID serve to have all in all 8 x 2TB. How do I prepare the 'old' WD20EARS for that purpose? When I purchased those drives, I put them directly into the DS410 without any additional preparations. So far, they work fine without any errors. Maybe it's easier to just sell them with the DS410? Chris
  9. ... I think you're right. BTW, is there any 12 or 16 port PCIe SATA card that is compatible with unRAID? I couldn't find one. Actually it sems that there also is only one compatible 8 port PCIe card, the AOC-SASLP-MV8. Not many choices... Chris
  10. Thank you all for the helpful tips and comments! I love his forum!! Do you guys think it's worth spending the extra bucks for a 4224 (instead of a 4220)? Maybe a future version of unRAID can make use of 24 drives? Or do you think the 4224 is overkill? Chris
  11. I finally decided to start building up an unRAID server. The first components already arrived: A supermicro C2SEE and a Celeron E3300. I've already ordered 2 AOC-SASLP-MV8 (not easy to come by in Europe). I'm going to order a Norco 4220 in one or two weeks. I have a question regarding the power button of that case: Can I safely shut down / start the unRAID server by just pushing the 4220's power button? Or do I have to shut down the machine via the Web Interface? Regards, Chris (hope you can understand my question, I'm from germany and my English is a bit crappy).

Hi, obviously the NF-P12 is a good choice. Does anyone have a good suggestion for a replacement of the 80mm fans in the back of the case? Or is a replacement of those fans not recommended? I've read somewehere that they aren't that loud. (?) Chris
  13. ... it says 'Icy Box'? ... not 'Icy Dock'. Sorry, but I don't get your point. Give me a hint... Cheers, Chris
  14. Hi, does anyone of you use the RaidSonic IB-555SSK Backplane? It's a very cool looking thing: http://www.raidsonic.de/data/datasheet/icybox/DE/datasheet_ib-555_554_553_d.pdf ... and according to this http://compusential.com/2010/07/09/raidsonic-icy-box-555ssk/ review, it seems to be an nice alternative to the 5 bay Icy Dock backplane. Any 'hand on' experiences of an unRAID user? Have a nice weekend, Chris
  15. I forgot something to ask: What is the difference between the C2SEE-O and the C2SEE-B. The latter one was offered to me for about 100€. Are -O and -B technically the same boards? Don't wan't to buy rubbish... Cheers, Chris
  16. Thanks Rajahal, i was just confused because I found the following specs for the board un Supermicro's Webpage: Expansion Slots PCI-Express 1 (x16) PCI-e 2.0 slot 1 (x4) PCI-e (using x16 slot) 1 (x1) PCI-e slot PCI 4x 32-bit 33MHz PCI (5V) slots I guess I have to put the two cards in the x16 and x4 slots. Right? The x16 slot works then in a sort of "downscaled" mode? I was asking because this motherboard is officially supported but difficult to find, and I could buy a used one from a local shop. Chrers, Chris
  17. Hi, can I use the SUPERMICRO MBD-C2SEE-O for a 20 drive unRAID? Or asked differently, has anyone tried to build in two of Supermicro's SASLP-MV8 in to that board? Is this possible? Or do you recommend a different SATA card for that purpose? Sorry for my bad english. Would be nice if someone could help me. Cheers, Chris
  18. Hi Luca, what SATA controllers do ypu have installed additionally to the built in controlers of the board? Cheers Chris
