  1. I've been trying to keep my Unraid server as plugin free as I can, but I really want to use preclear_disk.sh without having to keep my mac permanently connect to my server. I did find a thread previously that I can't seem to locate now that explained how to run the script inside a terminal on the Unraid server. I've installed UnMenu and from the list of plugins 'screen' seems to be the most likely candidate. I'm unclear how you invoke the screen plugin to run the preclear_disk.sh script. The usage of screen appears to be: screen [-opts] [cmd [args]] Options: -a Force all capabilities into each window's termcap. -A -[r|R] Adapt all windows to the new display width & height. -c file Read configuration file instead of '.screenrc'. -d (-r) Detach the elsewhere running screen (and reattach here). -dmS name Start as daemon: Screen session in detached mode. -D (-r) Detach and logout remote (and reattach here). -D -RR Do whatever is needed to get a screen session. -e xy Change command characters. -f Flow control on, -fn = off, -fa = auto. -h lines Set the size of the scrollback history buffer. -i Interrupt output sooner when flow control is on. -l Login mode on (update /var/run/utmp), -ln = off. -list or -ls. Do nothing, just list our SockDir. -L Turn on output logging. -m ignore $STY variable, do create a new screen session. -O Choose optimal output rather than exact vt100 emulation. -p window Preselect the named window if it exists. -q Quiet startup. Exits with non-zero return code if unsuccessful. -r Reattach to a detached screen process. -R Reattach if possible, otherwise start a new session. -s shell Shell to execute rather than $SHELL. -S sockname Name this session <pid>.sockname instead of <pid>.<tty>.<host>. -t title Set title. (window's name). -T term Use term as $TERM for windows, rather than "screen". -U Tell screen to use UTF-8 encoding. -v Print "Screen version 4.00.03 (FAU) 23-Oct-06". -wipe Do nothing, just clean up SockDir. -x Attach to a not detached screen. (Multi display mode). -X Execute <cmd> as a screen command in the specified session. Would 'screen preclear_disk.sh sdd' work? Could someone tell me the command line I'd need to enter to run pre clear_disk.sh inside screen please? or of an alternative method of pre-clearing without having to remain connected to the server for many days whilst it runs? Thanks, Mark.
  2. Thanks Joe, That sounds like a really useful script, and from your description perfect for my needs. Looking through your script the only thing I see happening if all disks are idle is the script exiting with a value of 0? I'm confused how this will invoke the mover script? Which part of your script starts mover? Also, and now I sound like the linux lightweight I am, I don't know how add the 'are_disks_idle.sh' script to the cron tasks to be run. I assume theres a line to add to my go script? By the way, adding a cache drive has been a fantastic performance boost when uploading to the server, I'd recommend it to everyone. I don't know why I didn't do it earlier as I always had smaller HDDs lying around. Mark.
  3. I've just installed a cache disk for the first time and I have a few questions... Where is my mover script file? Reading the Wiki:- I don't seem to have a folder called 'sbin' in '/usr/share' so consequently it doesn't contain a file called 'mover'. Directory Listing of /usr/share:- drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 2012-06-06 18:14 aclocal/ drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 2012-02-19 14:55 applications/ drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 0 2012-02-19 14:55 avahi/ drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 2010-05-10 04:10 awk/ drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 0 2010-05-05 07:42 common-lisp/ drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 0 2012-02-19 14:55 dbus-1/ drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 1993-11-26 03:40 dict/ drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 2010-02-13 00:53 empty/ drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 2010-04-30 08:18 et/ drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 2010-04-30 08:17 getopt/ drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 0 2009-12-06 02:47 gtk-doc/ drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 0 2010-05-15 14:13 icu/ drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 0 2010-05-10 04:09 mc/ drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 2011-01-27 23:19 smartmontools/ drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 2010-04-30 08:18 ss/ drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 0 2013-01-29 01:25 terminfo/ drwxr-xr-x 11 root root 0 2013-01-29 01:25 zoneinfo/ Has it's location changed in v5.x? or is mover something I need to install manually? Where is the schedule string changed? I'm overly not comfortable with waiting until the early hours of each morning to have items move to the protected array, so I would be interested in changing the schedule of mover. Where would I find this schedule string? Is it a line in the mover script it'sself? Is frequent scheduling of mover safe? Would I then be safe to schedule mover to run every 4 hours for example? If I was in the process of copying files to the cache drive when the mover script is invoked will everything be ok? How do I manually run mover? Is there a simple way to manually invoke mover when I know my unraid is not in use? Hopefully via the Web interface. What would be the command line to invoke the mover script via telnet? Thanks for nay help on these point, Mark.
  4. I had a feeling that it wouldn't work out too well. Thanks for the input. I ordered a RES2SV240 16-Port expander today so my new plan is to put an M1015 in the 16x slot and either: 1/ Run 1x SFF8087 SAS cable from 1 port on the M1015 to the RES2SV240 and have capacity for 20 disks off the RES2SV240 and 4 disks off the M1015 2/ Run 2 x SFF8087 SAS cable from the M1015 to the RES2SV24 and have capacity for 16 disks off the RES2SV240 and use the 8 SATA ports on the Mobo as well I don't have that many disks yet, so would I be better off populating the RES2SV240 first? Or sharing the load between the Mobo ports and the expander? Thanks again for your opinions.
  5. I hadn't appreciated that as it hasn't arrived yet. It looks to me from this image that there is a slot cut that should enable it to slot in the shorter socket (not the actual one I purchased). I assumed the unused pins just hang behind the shorter socket. There's no real problem here though as these parts were bought for my system upgrade hardware, but I'm waiting on a full resolution of the speed issues on the SuperMicro X9SCM-F Mobo in this thread. In principle though, can you run a SAS card in a 1x socket? Would things just go slower or would it cause issues?
  6. I'm ready to do a major upgrade to my UnRaid server, but there's still some performance issues with slow performance on the SuperMicro Motherboard and CPU combo I want to got for. Until it is resolved whether the combo I intend to buy will work at full performance I'm sticking with my old system and I'm wondering whether it is safe to use an IMB M1015 PCIe SAS card in a 1x PCIe slot on my current Gigabyte GA-G33-DS3R Motherboard? Mobo Link: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2535&dl=1#sp I need some further expansion and that's the highest performance slot available as I already have a Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 in the 16x slot. What do you think? Thanks, Mark.
  7. In my view there is no point in releasing 5.0 Final until the know issues are addressed. People can already get this version precisely as it is and it won't work any better by changing the version number. The idea that other companies release products they know have issues so it's fine for UnRaid to do the same is just stupid. If people want this version it's here for them (I'm using it), leave the RC tag in place as it acknowledges theres there are some issues. I think a carefully worded concise announcement that you strongly suggest people move to the latest v5.xRC but acknowledging the known issues would strengthen peoples confidence in your integrity regarding your product over stating it's done when it clearly isn't. We all appreciate the problems your dealing with and the time your spending on finding a solution, but this is peoples data you dealing with, data they feel strongly enough about to want to protect it with a raid solution. I think the masses (me included) would lose a little confidence if we can't that trust a "Final" version is not just that in name only. v5 isn't final yet, so why call it that? Mark.
  8. I'd like support for the Realtek 8169 NIC support baked in before they call it a final too Modded version from this thread is working just fine for me, but the rc8a doesn't.
  9. Just to add my name to the list... I'm another one hit by this NIC incompatibility. Thanks for the modded version piotrasd. I will be happier when we can get the NIC supported by an official build though. [EDIT] I can confirm piotrasd's build does work for me too
  10. Could you just map a network drive to a user share? In my case I'm limited because I need my media player to see a single ahare point for ALL MEDIA TYPES. After some trial & error I've got this sorted with the user shares in a way I'm VERY happy with:- How to create a single share point that contains all the user shares you require Make a note of which user shares you want under the single network share, in this example I want to use the user shares "dvd", "tv" & "hidef" You can list your user shares by connecting to the UnRaid server via telnet (user name: root <-- I know you know but some people don't ) and typing:- ls -l /mnt/user <-- That's a small "L" not a capital "i" Then you can create symbolic links (Linux equivalent of shortcuts) to them. In this example I've decided to create a folder called "media" to hold my shortcuts:- mkdir /mnt/disk1/media ln -s /mnt/user/dvd /mnt/disk1/media ln -s /mnt/user/tv /mnt/disk1/media ln -s /mnt/user/hidef /mnt/disk1/media Now from your PC you can browse to //tower/disk1/media and map a network drive. The "media" folder will hold the subfolders containing all the user shares you have specified. On my TViX box you can't map to a root directory, so for that I simply mapped M: to //tower/disk1/ and specified the path on the TVix Box as "M:\media". It worked a treat! If there is a way to combine the contents of all the folders you specify on your UnRaid into 1 single list I'd also love that, but I can't work out how to do it. As mentioned earlier please be careful not to create an "endless loop. An example wheere this could occur may be:- /mnt/disk1/ holds a folder called "Media" /mnt/disk1/media contains a shortcut to /mnt/disk1/... which holds the folder called Media that contains the shortcut to disk1 etc.etc. Hope this helps, Mark.
  11. Actually, I was thinking... I have 1gb of Ram in my servers. How difficult would it be to configure a ramdisk to contain the folder with the symbollic lnks? Thanks, Mark.
  12. As a test I tried:- cd /boot mkdir media cd media mkdir dvd mkdir hidef mkdir music ln -s /mnt/user/dvd /boot/media/dvd and got:- "creating symbolic link `/boot/media/dvd/dvd' to `/mnt/user/dvd': Operation not permitted So apparently that can't work Now if symbolic links can span the network I could potentially get around the endless loop problem by storing the symbolic links for each "media" folder on a different unraid machine I guess? //tower1/disk1/media contains links to //tower2 user shares //tower2/disk1/media contains links to //tower3 user shares etc. Could this be a solution? It's not ideal but I don't have a Disk in any of my UnRaids that doesn't contain files I need included in the symbolic link. Thanks, Mark.
  13. I've been trying to work out a way to get symbolic links to the user share folders. I have a just bought a media player that has a very limited number of share points (4 total). As I have 3 UnRaids (and other PC locations) this limits me somewhat and I'd like to create a single share point per UnRaid if possible. I have a few questions... 1/ Regarding the possibility of an endless loop.. I can see how that could happen. Could the folder containing the symbolic links be stored on the USB key this way there couldn't be an endless loop of content? or would that slow streaming access to USB levels? 2/ Would it be possible to create a symbolic link to a user share? I have MANY disks in my unraid machines and I would prefer it if the list of movies, music etc. was not sub-divided into the disk location subfolders. 3/ Can symbolic links span different machines on the network? Tower1, Tower2 & Tower2 for example? I'd like to create a folder called "media", hopefully on the USB key, and under that have:- media/dvd media/recordedtv media/podcasts media/losslessmusic/ media/musicvideos media/karaoke etc. with all the sub folders being user shares That way I can link to the "media" folder from the remote box and keep the content divided into the relevant categories without the Disk sub-folders. Is this possible? Also... 4/ The manual for my new mediaplayer box offers NFS share and SAMBA share options. Are NFS share supported on UnRaid? Thanks, Mark.
