Just a guess, cachedir isn't caching deep enough into your folders? Say you tell it to cache 4 deep and you have a folder tree like:- \Disk1\A\b\c\d\e\f Cachedirs will only scan up to D, so, when 'find' looks in /e and /e/f it'll have to spin up the drives. It appears as though I have some dirs that are seven deep: /boot/cache_dirs -d 5 -m 3 -M 5 -w is now /boot/cache_dirs -d 5 -m 3 -M 5 -e "Backup" -e "Pics" -w I'm going to add an ignore command for those. They're just backups anyway.

The last few times I've run find -name '*searchterm*' , most disks are spinning up. I don't recall this happening previously. Any guesses on the cause? syslog-2013-03-01.txt

You have more than enough free memory... It could be that something is trying to read more than just your directory content (windows explorer is notorious in that respect)... Possibly related: even WITH cache_dirs installed, viewing directories with Windows Explorer on an unRAID server would cause disks to spin up. Not so using Total Commander.

I have determined that using Windows Explorer causes the disks to spin up, whereas Total Commander does not. "How do you like them apples?"

It appears as though all disks are spinning up when I open a directory. This did not occur yesterday, before my internet was down for a few hours. Side note: If any piece of network hardware is rebooted, I lose connectivity to both servers. Odd. I use Total Commander in Source: Only file names mode. That means no thumbnails. I tried twice more directly after the original attempt, and it stalled after just a couple minutes. I did not notice the sector count. Thanks for the reply.

Speaking of... UPS delivered a new 2TB WD Green disk yesterday. I took advantage of the recent promo code on newegg. The shipping box contained styrofoam packing peanuts and the OEM box. The OEM box is the one that contains the little plastic end caps the disk and anti-static bag rests in, "floating". I started a preclear this morning using v1.11, my laptop, and an e-sata dock. The same setup as I've done for the last three new disks. I checked the progress a few minutes ago and it was stalled at ~45% on the second step. I did a hard shutdown of the lappy, rebooted, then started the preclear again. This time, Disk /dev/sdb doesn't contain a valid partition. sdb is currently failing SMART tests. Reallocated_sector_ct now 1265. is displayed. :o I think this is my first bad disk. Your thoughts?

Mine is in the root of the flash drive. When you say package, I only had a single file. Did you have more? Yes - just the one. I asked if you had more than one file, and you replied yes, just the one. If it's one file, cache_dirs, copy it into root of your USB drive.

I also wanted to say thanks. My shares load much quicker than before, even when the disks were spinning. Is this an appropriate script to stop the cache_dir: #define USER_SCRIPT_LABEL Stop cache_dirs #define USER_SCRIPT_DESCR Stop the cache_dir script # # stop cache_dir cache_dirs -q I copied the syntax of the stop python menu, simply changing the relevant commands. It's named 10-unmenu_user_script_stop_cachedirs and is in the unmenu dir.

Personally, I often found that I wasn't always sure that the topics I was reading about in the FAQ or forums actually matched the question/issue I was having.

Yeah, the HTPC plays back all content, no matter the audio encoding.

I have had an HTPC for the last 4+ years and it's been great. But now I think there has to be something better. Lower power use, smaller footprint, etc. I'm currently borrowing a WD HDTV Live. Nice little device. Easy to setup and it found all of my network devices in a matter of seconds. The biggest drawback is no optical drive, but I've got that worked out. I'm gonna enable sharing for the optical drive on my workstation. Done and done. There were some rumors that the newest model will not playback DTS audio, and I'm going to try and confirm that before I place my order.

In one of the threads talking about this error, someone tried the pre_clear over and over until started. It was also mentioned that NO other processes were active when running pre_clear. Checking array, moving files, etc. Your issue and the other may not be related, but they seem to be at my (n00b) first glance.

That sounds like the problem I had. Double check the boot device is still your USB drive. It may have changed.

The unRAID main page has DISK_DSBL_NP in the Array Disk Status section. The other four disks are listed as OK.

I accessed the unRAID Main page, stopped the array, then went to the Devices page, and unassigned the disk to be pre-cleared. I then saw this: Is that what is supposed to be there? The pre-clear appears to be running normally.

Alright. I assume the disk has to be removed from the array prior to running a second pre-clear?
