  1. 4.7 even if I'm not mistaken. not sure what happened. it had to take the power off for a while could have been as much a dead motherboard battery causing a firmware reset, but I'm just guessing at this point. the system has only VGA out. I "borrowed" my monitor that had VGA to a friend. but is their fams only monitor so it would break my heart to go and collect it. I bought a device on which i should be ably to mount drives via external USB. I just need to find some free software that allows me to mount them min win 10 and being able to copy them, all i care for is the music and maybe some education courses. most of it was movies and TV series. and I stopped watching TV and movies ages ago i could not care less for that content. I have some screenshots with my drive setup so i think i should be able to recognize serienumbers if those match externally. I'm feeling is probably something simple like a reset bios or maybe a failed USB drive.. then again the system is like 12 years old. I think for now i just try to retrieve the files i care about. maybe in time i will have the opportunity to connect to the system.
  2. downloaded the ipmi software and it found the motherboard. so the cable is working. unfortunately i don't remember the login and pas for ipmi. and cant find it in my notes either . i do remember however that when i tried to login in the past it would no longer accept the credentials so even if i had it it would most likely no longer work. I also don't have a VGA monitor so currently have no way of getting in. I'm not familiar enough with linux to understand what needs to happen for the server to show up in the DHCP server. could it be the flash drive got corrupted or failed? or should it have shown up before that? in the worst case i just have to find tool to mount my drives externally on my pc and copy the files i want to recover.
  3. so the first question is why does it not show up? could it be corrupted unraid software or must it be it hardware related? i have no vga screen to connect and ipmi got corrupted (or hacked?) tho I assume if it does not show up in the DHCP server it is impossible to connect anyway or am i mistaken about that? in the worst case scenario i need to figure out how to move some of the files from the discs (mainly Music, Dont care to much about series and movies)
  4. Hi it has been ages since i build the server and it has been nearly always on. i had to shut it down because someone in the house needed to work on electricity. i turned of the server some plugin (i don't remember the name) from that would do a clean shutdown after a short press on the power button. Thew server went through its shut down sequence seeing from the lights dancing around. but now when i start it up it seems to remain offline. i can't see it in the dhcp server. i tried restarting the router. server, pc but it remains no show. the server is headless and is was so long ago i build it I basically forgot most things related too it. could anyone be kind enough to point me in the right direction trying to figure out what is wrong and how to fix it? Regards, E..
  5. the hgst nas drives were only €150 here compared to €135 for the ST4000DM000 so it was a small premium tho its always good to spread out the risk anyway. that's the beauty of unraid compared to normal raid. expand when you want and also the drive does not need to be the same spec as the other drives.
  6. the temps seem to be only a couple of degrees higher sofar. i have to see how that will work out on a very hot summer day but it seems fine sofar
  7. ye there must have been some anomaly why the preread during preclear took like 17 hours even tho the speeds reported during the preclearing looked normal (150-80 MB/s) == Using :Read block size = 65536 Bytes == Last Cycle's Pre Read Time : 17:19:24 (64 MB/s) == Last Cycle's Zeroing time : 8:53:51 (124 MB/s) == Last Cycle's Post Read Time : 28:02:02 (39 MB/s) == Last Cycle's Total Time : 36:57:06 i think it will remain a mystery to me the HGST NAS drives are 7200rpm which might make up A little for onlu haveing 800gb platters compared to models that have 1TB platters and spin at lower speeds seagates did have the highest failure rate in the Backblaze report. maybe it was mostly the older seagates that failed I don't remember the full article at this point. do remember they were currently buying 4tb seagates and wd reds.
  8. The blackblaze report was indeed why i chose this time for the hitachi nas drives. Altho the particular (now HGST) drive was not part of the test itself the positive result of hittachis in general was motivating enough. For the same reason i chose not to go for the faster 1tb/platter seagate drives. When reading through new egg reviews it is shocking how high the initial failure of most current drives is. When reading reviews however i always take into account than someone with a negative experience is far more likely to report than someone who has no problems. I also wonder how much transport could have to do with this. I did have one weird thing with the drives which i reported in this thread with preclear taking longer than expected. A couple of post down are also the preclear reports. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=4068.msg298196#msg298196 During the current parity check the drive speeds seem fine. 2.91 TB (73%) Estimated speed: 115.73 MB/sec
  9. thanks for the insights. i thought it was just an extra safety to do an extra parity check after the new parity disk had rebuild. and before adding a new drive. I had just added a new 4TB data drive so the all next checks will have to be full. i'll just do another full check now before putting any data on it. all new drives have been precleared 3 times. so i assume i should be safe. doing a no-correct check now to see if all is indeed fine
  10. Hi. just replaced my 2TB parity for 4TB drive. just to be safe i did another paritycheck. since all the disks in the array are 2TB i found its strange it would keep checking the other 2TB. I understand that it wont be often that the paritydrive is the largest drive but it would still make sense it would finish once it had covered all data. I canceled the parity check cause i did not see whar benefit it would have to let it finish.
  11. Hi i would like to upgrade my server to the latest 5.x version. I still have a lot of files in a hidden folder on the cache drive. after I upgrade to 5.x can i still access the hidden folder and move the files i want to keep to the protected shares? or will the be deleted or will i get like permission problems or something? i only want to keep a small part of the files but it will take some time to sort them out so i prefer to keep them on the cache drive if hassle free thanks
  12. disks have finally stopped preclearing (The disks are the new HTGS 4tb 7200rpm NAS drives) here is an example from a report. == invoked as: ./preclear_disk.sh -r 65536 -w 65536 -b2000 -c 3 /dev/sdf == HGSTHDN724040ALE640 PK1334PBH0H4DS == Disk /dev/sdf has been successfully precleared == with a starting sector of 1 == Ran 3 cycles == == Using :Read block size = 65536 Bytes == Last Cycle's Pre Read Time : 17:19:24 (64 MB/s) == Last Cycle's Zeroing time : 8:53:51 (124 MB/s) == Last Cycle's Post Read Time : 28:02:02 (39 MB/s) == Last Cycle's Total Time : 36:57:06 == == Total Elapsed Time 128:11:36 == == Disk Start Temperature: 33C == == Current Disk Temperature: 38C, strangely enough whenever i looked in the putty window reported read speeds were much higher more like 150-80 all the disks seem fine by the way. only i keep wondering what caused the slow read speeds. i do have to add i followed the wiki manual and first tried creating a new screen session withing the same putty window. but when i tried this for the 3rd drive it became unresponsive and i could see that the 2 drives that had already started prereading had stopped. so i started 3 separate putty windows and gave the commands again. wonder if this somehow could affect the read speeds. but if so why not the write speed? i cant install the disk yet need to upgrade to to unraid 5 first and clear the cache folder that still have a lot of files on it in a hidden folder. anyone has ideas what could be going on or how to find out more? is there a way without making the preclear invalid to test the read speeds? and is it normal that the speeds reported during the preclear and in the reports are so different (64 in log while during preread on screen it showed 150-80) ? i'm very curious to find out what is going on. thanks precear_reports.zip
  13. Controller throughput and bus throughput are certainly important factors. Perhaps the biggest factor is the rotational speed of the drive. If you check the User Benchmarks, Preclear Times wiki section, you can see that rough speeds for 7200rpm drives is 10 hours (+/- 2 hours) per terabyte, and that rough speeds for 5900rpm drives is 13 hours (+/- 1 hour) per terabyte. thats why 17 hours seem a bit long for just pre-read. these are 7200 drives. i saw in old pre-clear logs that pre-reading and writing zeroes took roughly the same time on a wd green. (both aprox 6:30h) for what its worth writing zeroes is going on for a bit over 3 hours and it is at 39%. it will surely slow down a bit but i doubt it will take 17 hours like the pre-read did it will be a while before i can see the logs for these drives. wonder what i will see there
  14. 2 of them are connected to an AOC-SASLP-MV8 the other is connected to the mother board. The drive that was connected to the MB was a little faster and finished the pre-read when the others 2 were at 98%. it took about 17 hours for it to finish pre-reading. the number of 40 hours for 4tB would imply the following numbers: 10h pre-read 10h writing zeroes and 20h post read.
  15. its step zero pre-reading the thing is i'm either miscalculating or the speeds don't match the time even if the speed would be constant 80MB/s it would do 288000 MB in an hour and should be finished within 14 hours i'm just curious why it is the speeds have been higher yet it is still not finished the prereading at these speeds a single cycle will be 17h + 17h +34 h = 68 Hours
  16. i started preclearing 3 hgst 4tb nas drives. it seems to take long time. How long would be normal? it started prereading around 140-150 MB/s and is currently 85 to 90 MB/s progress is currently 94-96% and elapsed time is 16:15 - to 16:05 . i used: preclear_disk.sh -r 65536 -w 65536 -b 2000 -c 3 /dev/sdX if the average speed would be 90MB/s it should have finished aleady right?
  17. thanks a lot that's very helpful. its seems to be only a couple of degrees not bad at all. because of their good reputation i had already ordered 3 of the 4tb nas drives from hitachi. one for parity one for data and a spare. now the next step will be finding out how to get the smoothest upgrade from 4.7 to 5.x
  18. ye i'm looking at the 4tb nas drives too http://www.hgst.com/tech/techlib.nsf/techdocs/E24F75A14027DBAC88257C74007DB2AD/$file/DS_NAS_ds.pdf since my system still contains a number of 2tb WD and samsung drives i doubt the higher speed of the 1tb platter of the seagate nas drives matters at all. i do wonder how much hotter the HGST drives will rin compared to all the green drives i have. http://blog.backblaze.com/2014/01/21/what-hard-drive-should-i-buy/ this article shows the Hitachi's are fare more reliable than the seagates altho it also states: this gives a bit of credit back to Seagate and WD does anyone else know how hot the hgst drives get to comparable low rpm drives?
  19. thanks that should help i'll dive into the settings to see what going on disk2 also spins up and down like to rest for some reason it didn't in the little sample log i posted not sure why. the cache disks contains only a .torrent folder i'll try to leave the mover info blank to see if that disables the mover. i think i read unraid 5 has cache only shares maybe that helps since this is all oftopic now and 5.0 is around the corner i'll just wait for that. again thanks for pointing me in the right direction
  20. Hi, i'm trying to figure out why my drives always spin up around 04:41 does cache directories do extra scheduled scans? if not I have to look elsewhere Jan 28 04:41:00 Whaaat kernel: mdcmd (2021): spindown 0 (Routine) Jan 28 04:41:01 Whaaat kernel: mdcmd (2022): spindown 1 (Routine) Jan 28 04:41:01 Whaaat kernel: mdcmd (2023): spindown 3 (Routine) Jan 28 04:41:03 Whaaat kernel: mdcmd (2024): spindown 4 (Routine) Jan 28 04:41:04 Whaaat kernel: mdcmd (2025): spindown 5 (Routine) Jan 28 04:41:04 Whaaat kernel: mdcmd (2026): spindown 6 (Routine) Jan 28 04:41:05 Whaaat kernel: mdcmd (2027): spindown 7 (Routine) thanks for your time
  21. OT that a very black and white statement that can the objective of a business. but is not so for every business.
  22. are you implying he hasn't returned? to be honest i never encountered these enormousness bugs 4.7 is supposed to have. sure i would be nice to be able to upgrade the hard drives to larger sizes but don't feel for running an RC. It will come when it comes. Will tom will ever change his way of communication? don't know but the yapping wont help a bit. just relax ^^
  23. Joe L. idea makes a lot of sense. I too believe this should be added to core functionality. I dont believe this would be a thing that would make unraid bulky or slugish. helping keeping the server online especial with 4TB and bigger drives on the horizon is highly desirable. on a side note maybe it deserves a own thread i'd love to see something like cache_dirs or similar functionality added to core features too. it makes so much sense not to spinup drives that are not realy needed.
