This syslog has been running all day.

This syslog appears to be taken after a restart. Try to get one before a restart.
That is weird because I had the sys log running before my server crashed.

Ok so my server is at it again. I had 2 random shut downs today and one yesterday. Of course I was not running a syslog at the time. I now have the syslog running hoping to capture the problem.

OK I got the tail syslog running now. I want to apologize to anyone I offended because of my frustration. I really hope to get this resolved and greatly appreciate any help that I receive.

Wonder if I need to look into a cache drive. Thinking with all the writing to the server with my multiple live HD recordings and ripping movies to to the sever could be causing this crashing.

I am typing telnet and ip address. Here are the IP addresses in my router and I used them all.

The syslog appears to be from right after a reboot so does not tell us much.
Did the system start doing a parity check after it had shut down unexpectedly?
The one thing that will tell you the most is the command
tail -f /var/log/syslog
I turned on Telnet Client and in the box I typed this ( tail -f /var/log/syslog ) and it is saying invalid command.
If you open a telnet window and then type the above command it will print out what is being logged as it happens. Leave that open, make sure your desktop computer does not go to sleep or hibernation, and then leave that running. When the server goes down it should hopefully print something of use so that we can figure out what is going on.

Wife said her tv show recordings were pixelated. I saw the recordings tonight and they were horrible and unwatchable. I am using sagetv with hd homeruns recording to my unraid server. Wondering if the server is not fast enough to record multiple live tv shows which could be causing the server crashes. I was also ripping a blu ray to the server last night also.

The last few days my server has been shutting down on its own. I usually notice it when my Sagetv is trying to record shows to the server. Sometimes I am ripping movies and it will say that the server is not found. Any ideas what could be causing this?

I was ripping some dvd's last night and there are multiple settings for mkv. I set it ti remux, which from I read is uncompressed? I want to copy the movies to my unraid without losing quality 1:1. Would the mkv file be an exact copy of the movie? Does mkv stream well to most streaming devices?

I use DVDFab "BluRay Ripper" to rip BluRays directly to a single ".mkv" file. It does no re-encoding just a copy from the .m2ts files(usually is multiple files) to a single ".mkv" file. Although lately (since version 8.0 came out) I've been ripping to a single ".m2ts" file. I haven't bought the DVD portion. At least not yet but when I expand the options on the "DVD Ripper" it looks like it should rip to single files there as well. For DVDs (which I don't
buy any more - if I can help it anyway - just BluRays) I'm still using AnyDVD and CloneDVD mobile to rip to single files.

You could use the "Ripper" to rip to a single MKV directly in DVDFab. I don't compress mine so I can't say anything about the quality of compression in DVDFab however.I use DVDFab in "Main title mode", and convert the files with Handbrake to a mkv file. This way I get a single file containing only the movie and the languages I want ( usually German and English). And the files are acceptable in size, about 2 gig for a DVD and 8 gig for a Blu-ray. Only problem is the time it takes to convert the files... must be my crappy CPU, an E8700. My next machine is an i7, for sure.

What programs are you using? I am using DVDfab and it rips into multiple VOB files and I need to go back and merge them.

Yeah I have been reading a little bit today and hearing a lot of suggestions of MKV.

I am beginning to rip dvd and blu rays for my unraid server that is being built. I plan on using a PS3 for one room to stream from server. I have some tivos also but have not decided on the streaming device in the other rooms yet.
I have ripped a few dvd's already using DVDfab and ripped them into VOB files. I then go back and merge all the VOB files into a single VOB. I would like to get some opinions on what file type to use before I get too involved in the ripping process.
I am also ripping cd's and putting them in FLAC. I wonder how much lower quality 320kb MP3 would?

A couple random shut downs today and no sys log running. But I noticed after restarting server that my pc gets a blue screen of death. Wonder if there is something in my network causing this? I have a DLink DIR 655 router that is going to a 5 and 8 ports gigabit switch that goes to each room and server.
