Sorry to rescue this old thread.

I was about to purchase this melanox model but seen that is not fully compatible is a problem.

Is there any other 40G card or better that is fully compatible with unraid and can be purchased used with a good price?

I have found the intel XL710-QDA1 but it cost almost 3 times more in ebay

There are SKUs of the mellonox cards that are infiniband only, but don't think there are any in the MCX353A line up.
You can confirm support in the product manual
    https://network.nvidia.com/pdf/user_manuals/ConnectX-3_VPI_Single_and_Dual_QSFP_Port_Adapter_Card_User_Manual.pdf

mkdir: can't create directory '/var/lib/grafana/plugins': Permission denied
    GF_PATHS_DATA='/var/lib/grafana' is not writable.
You may have issues with file permissions, more information here: http://docs.grafana.org/installation/docker/#migrate-to-v51-or-later

Kann mir jemand weiterhelfen was ich tun  muss oder wie ich den Docker zum Laufen bekomme? Vielen Dank schon einmal.

Just went through this myself, solution is to change permissions from read-only for group/other to R/W:

    Several notes on my side.

First, the "cache". Why? Your array is made of SSDs, why have a separate, most probably slower SSD as cache? Unless you're rocking 10GB/s in that tiny box, any SSD, even a SATA one, will more than max a Gigabit connection (and a 2.5BGps one).

You mention a "backup" server, but it seems to be more a separate "test" server than a backup repository, is it? Or is it one that will be used as a target for backing up data?

    Quick questions:

    • Is the "cache" also a SATA SSD? If yes, I would probably have used that last SATA slot to get a larger raidz1 ZFS pool

    • I don't see the main array anywhere in your screenshots. Did you just hide it, or did you find a way to NOT have a main array?

I don't mind being challenged on the setup, this was all whipped together over a few days, even though I wanted to do it for ages :)

The M.2 is a 250GB NVME that came with the unit from auction, its a freebie I wouldn't of bought for this but it'll get used for appdata etc for convenience + separation of roles, the pool name "cache" is the default first pool name and I've haven't sought fit to change it yet.  I was able to setup what I wanted out of Unraid in about 5min, but I'm not afraid to nuke and pave this to get the format right.

The targets for this server will be backups of vms, appdata, user docs, photos, music etc... basically all the important non-video media from my main servers.

A mirrored 4TB will be plenty for now, and its really just a +1 safeguard given existing data is already mirrored and/or parity protected on other respective servers.

Once first backup is done, I'm not expecting the backup deltas to use a lot of bandwidth... and if it does I won't notice anyway.

Main array is a spare thumbdrive, next release should remove the requirement for it to exist.

In release 6.12 you can customise the visible panels, I've simply hidden the array + parity panels (see below).

  4. Final ingredient was small + thin sata cables, which came today!

Happily running on 6.12.4 at the moment

Looking forward to testing out subvolumes and snapshots plugin as part of this backup server journey :)

  5. A project server that I've been meaning to do for some time is a small backup server, able to be located seperately from my main rack.

I came across the M710q at local auctions and eventually picked one up for under AUD$100.

Out of the box it is well specced, with one m.2 slot and one 2.5" drive... but I really wanted 2x 2.5" so I could run a raid1 pool for backups.

Enter a slew of additional purchases, modifying a sata splitter, and a couple hours on the 3D printer to prototype a solution:

Unraid Connect v2023.09.07.1147 has been released to remedy the conflict with Dynamix File Manager to fix file editing.

Can confirm this was impacting me on 6.11.5, and the Connect update resolved the issue.

I've noticed that in the 6.12.2 & 6.12.3 update — Terminal and Log no longer launch from the GUI while using Safari.

    • Content blockers is off for the GUI
    • I don't have any extensions that would interfere. Or at least they haven't in the past.
    • Testing in private browser mode — you are immediately logged out when you try to launch Terminal.

    **Update**

    • Issue is not present when logging in via IP address, but is present when logging in via local domain name.
    • Using the local domain name wasn't an issue before.

sounds like a browser cache issue, try clearing it out.

  8. Pretty much any 140mm fan is best if you can make it work, pressure + flow at lower rpm = quiet performer.
I used the Noctua NF-A14 to cool 28 disks in a rosewill 4u (custom arrangement).

That said the crappy fans the rosewills come with worked fine for me in another case loaded with 15 drives with the dust filter / front door open, they're just a bit noisey.

It is not that fact that the flash drive is USB2 or USB3.  It is the fact that (for some unexplained reason) Unraid, Linux, USB3 ports and certain motherboards have an interaction that results instability of the entire flash drive connection.  The only common factor is the USB3 port.  When the problem occurs, using a USB2 port will fix the problem.

I would note many modern motherboards don't come with usb2.0 ports anymore, but sometimes they do allow those ports to be put into usb2.0 mode in bios settings.

So ist is not possible to let unraid automatically decrypt the Drives after password has been entered?

Unraid uses LUKS for encryption (you need to format with this option), which works in a similar way to Bitlocker.

You can either manually enter the passphrase to unlock disks and start the array, or store it somewhere accessible at array start time and have it use it automatically, e.g. your example of a separate usb containing the passphrase.

Can you please explain the power supply to me? How many hard drives do you have per connector on the power supply? Is there any issue if all the hard drives start simultaneously?

Start up surge is on 12V rail, no issues with that on a 1200W PSU, 5V rail was at its limit with 28 disks, but no current in-rush to contend with.

I've since moved most of my disks into a Netapp DS4246 (an external disk shelf) which has its own PSUs.

Actually I think it started with 6.11. I just upgraded to 6.12 yesterday but been getting callback trace warnings from FCP for this issue starting about 6 months ago while I was still on 6.11.

From what I have read there is some speculation that it’s a kernel problem but I don’t think anyone knows for sure. No real pattern so far.

I remember reading about macvlan crashes as far back as 6.9, for me it 6.10 upgrade that saw crashes appear.

Thank you again, just ordered both the Asus Hyper M.2 PCI-E and the Quadro  GPU!

R730/R730XD only have one x16 slot in their default configuration.
If you want 2x x16 electrically you need to pickup the "alternate" riser used in Dell's GPU kits (can be found on ebay cheap).

Otherwise the GPU will need to run at x8.

You'll probably want to pick up the correct pcie power cable for your GPU also, which are powered off the riser.

I’m assuming the emulated disk holds a healthy file because bit rot / bit flip doesn’t update the parity. Bit rot / flip is a physical change on the disk and it happens outside of unraid’s control. The parity only gets updated when unraid is writing to the disk (which isn’t the case with bit rot / bit flip).

Emulated disk utilises parity disk to calculate, which can also bitflip at the same probability as a regular array data disk.

There is a lot of hype around ZFS and I recently watched SpaceInvaders video on the rc5 and how to make ZFS pools... but I'm confused as to what ZFS is and why I should be excited. I know it is another file system... but is it worth changing my array from XFS... and if so.. can you convert an existing array to ZFS?

Most users already on Unraid will probably be happy with the status quo, but ZFS on Unraid will appeal to a lot of new users that liked all the other aspects of Unraid, but were put off by lack of ZFS.

The ZFS file system itself is the gold standard and is extremely robust with great performance, at the cost of being less flexible and more $/TB compared to the classic Unraid array.
