  1. Thanks for the suggestion. I replaced the PSU with another Seasonic unit and everything has been running smoothly. A tip of the hat to Seasonic as they turned around the RMA within a couple of days.
  2. My system keeps shutting down (not cleanly) at certain times. It has happened twice at the end of a Parity Check, and it seems to also happen during some other regular updates or checks. Trouble shooting to date: Updated bios Updated to 6.12.1 Checked all cables and reapplied thermal paste and confirmed cpu fans are operational 24 hour memtest with no issues No issues while watching movies Moved to a different USB stick and ensured it is now plugged into a USB 2.0 port When doing this, I noticed that the amount of data on the drive has certainly grown over the years, but there is still well over 2GB of free space syslog.txt Latest syslog server is attached. Would appreciate any thoughts on what else I can do.
  3. Hi, I currently have three different computer systems in my one bedroom apartment (with only one user at this time), and am thinking about my options and whether it might be worth combining my unRAID system with my HTPC. First, some specs: unRAID: AMD Sempron 145 (806 Passmark), ASRock 880GM-LE, 4GB Ram, 3 x NORCO SS-500 and 14 usable drives for 96TB of storage housed in AZZA Helios 910. One parity drive. HTPC: i5-3570k, Asus P8Z77-M, GeForce 970, 8GB Ram, Fractal Design Node 605 Case Desktop: i7 9700k & GeForce RTX 2070 Super, 32GB Ram. I currently use unRAID for streaming content (4k, Blu-ray and DVD) to HTPC or Vero 4K+ to watch on a 4k tv with KODI interface. I do not transcode anything. I also use system for music files for itunes and Sonos and backing up my Desktop system. Looking ahead I am thinking about upgrading in order to: Add more power so I can watch a 4k movie while pre-clearing a disk or adding another movie at the same time. If I am doing a parity check, adding a movie, or pre-clearing than I have trouble watching a movie at the same time. For pre-clearing I currently open the side panel and connect a new drive to a SATA cable since a docking station through USB 2.0 would take forever. Add the ability to transcode 1-2 streams to ipad or other device with Plex. Possibly add 2nd parity drive Possibly add pfsense Possibly add home security camera system Possibly move system to Fractal 7 XL in order to remove Norco cages and create quieter system. At the same time, I want to use as little electricity as possible due to high rates. For my HTPC, I currently use it for KODI and Dolphin Emulator. I am considering upgrading my graphics card so I can add madVR and increase quality of dvd content. In the meantime I use my Vero 4k+ exclusively. So, might it make sense to combine unRAID and HTPC or should I keep my unRAID separate and continue to use as a NAS but with option to build up? I will not do anything to my desktop which I use for productivity, photos (lightroom & photoshop), and gaming (Forza). Any thoughts on if it would be worth combining, or should I continue to keep everything separate? Any thoughts on a good CPU to upgrade to? Thanks
  4. UPS was a CyberPower, Model CP1000AVRLCD that was purchased in 2011.
  5. Thanks for the thoughts and advice. Luckily the data is all backed up, so it is just a matter of replacing the drives and drive cages and importing the data again. I will have to find out what UPS it was. I do know that power went out (though unknown for how long), and that unRaid did not complete a clean power down. The home is in the mountains and power sounds a bit spotty, though not enough to have an emergency generator. Some other devices attached to the UPS made it through with no issue.
  6. Helping to fix my friend's unRaid after a power surge destroyed 4 drives with 14TB of data (2 drives when put into a docking station won't even allow power to go on, and 2 aren't spinning at all). In addition, 2 Norco SS-500 drive cages were destroyed as well. This was all despite having a UPS that would consistently show 15 minutes of battery time attached. I know all the data is lost, and that once I spin up the other drives that are being recognized, there could be additional data loss. Luckily, things are backed up so nothing critical has been lost. My question relates to best practices for moving forward. The motherboard, CPU, Ram & PSU have all been upgraded as part of an already planned upgrade, but should I be thinking of anything else or be looking out for any pitfalls? Thanks
  7. @ashman70, thanks for the recommendations. The Ryzen combo looks like a good option, and would certainly be a huge upgrade from my present system, while providing headroom beyond my current needs. I have briefly looked at the Ryzen issue and it seems that disabling C6 mode is a workaround. My question regarding this is what, if any, performance impact does this have?
  8. Located in the US. $500 for MB, CPU and RAM if possible (I haven't spent a lot of time researching if this is totally a reasonable expectation). If it is more for something that will last another six years, I'm OK with that.
  9. It would be nice if budget could stay around $500, but I'm OK if is costs more. I only have slots for 16 drives right now, 14 of which are being used. One slot is kept open for pre-clearing disk before adding to the array and the other empty slot is available on one of the SATA Expansion cards. There are also several 3tb drives which could be consolidated onto one larger drive if additional space is needed.
  10. It has come time to upgrade the power of my unRaid system. Built in 2011, the system is used very simply to store media (Blu-Rays and DVDs ripped with MakeMKV and Music, largely saved in Apple Lossless format). Plex is then used on a Roku, AppleTV & an HTPC for streaming video content and Sonos for music. Due to low computing power, the Plex docker is not used. Current system specs: Motherboard: ASRock 880GM-LE (Micro ATX) CPU: AMD Sempron 145 (812 Passmark) RAM: 4GB PSU: Corsair CX V2 500-Watt 80 Plus Case: AZZA Helios 910 with 3 Norco SS-5—5-Bay Modules SATA Expansion: 1 x Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 & 1 x Monoprice 102530 SATA2 Serial ATA II PCI-Express Drives: 1 x 10TB Parity, 13 x 3-10TB for total of 60+ GB The goal is to have a system that can handle 2 simultaneous video streams (uncompressed 1080p) while also being able to handle adding new content. It would also be nice if the machine could handle transcoding duties (currently managed by an i7 system) for compressing movies onto and ipad or accessing remotely through Plex app. I do not envision a need for any VM or gaming. I would also be open to adding a secondary parity drive and a cache drive if it would increase performance and reliability. I would love any recommendations for a new motherboard/cpu combo (will also have to upgrade RAM) that would serve the above purposes and provide some future proofing as well. Ideally power consumption would be low, but this is not a driving concern. Thanks for any thoughts or recommendations.
  11. I have run into the same trouble. My post read seems to have stopped at 54%, though CPU usage does continue at 100% on CPU 1 (CPU 0 at 0%) Mar 03 16:52:13 preclear_disk_Z840RRGX_8870: Command: /usr/local/emhttp/plugins/preclear.disk/script/preclear_disk.sh --notify 2 --frequency 2 --cycles 2 --no-prompt /dev/sdb Mar 03 16:52:13 preclear_disk_Z840RRGX_8870: Preclear Disk Version: 0.8.4-beta Mar 03 16:52:13 preclear_disk_Z840RRGX_8870: S.M.A.R.T. info type: default Mar 03 16:52:13 preclear_disk_Z840RRGX_8870: S.M.A.R.T. attrs type: default Mar 03 16:52:18 preclear_disk_Z840RRGX_8870: Pre-Read: dd if=/dev/sdb of=/dev/null bs=2097152 iflag=direct Mar 03 16:52:18 preclear_disk_Z840RRGX_8870: Pre-Read: dd pid [11375] Mar 04 07:41:07 preclear_disk_Z840RRGX_8870: Pre-Read: dd - read 8001563222016 of 8001563222016. 12. I wanted to post updated results of Seagate 6TB Preclear using Preclear 1.15 for reference (I think drive looks good). Seagate_6TB.txt
  13. SMART report looks fine. It's hard to say what the times should be for a 6tb drive, until other reports come in. Doesn't look wildly wrong though. You used Preclear 1.9, which is very old, probably too old for very large drives. I'm not sure you can trust the result on drives over 2TB using any Preclear less than 1.13, and perhaps Preclear 1.15 (the latest). You should definitely upgrade Preclear, and you may want to try it again. At least, try a Preclear -t test on it, with the latest Preclear. Thanks
  14. Question on preclearing a Seagate 6TB drive. The pre read time and post read time, and thus the cycle total time seem high to me. In addition, the read rate versus the zeroing rate seems out of whack when compared with smaller drives I have done. Anything to be concerned about here (results attached)? Seagate_6TB.txt
  15. Excellent. Disabling INT 13H did the trick. Thanks for the help.
  16. SUPERMICRO AOC-SASLP-MV8 PCI Express x4 Low Profile SAS RAID Controller and SATA2 Serial ATA II PCI-Express RAID Controller Card (Silicon Image SIL3132)
  17. I am on Bios version 1.4. I tried to upgrade, but the system doesn't seem to recognize the update when I put it on a flash drive (fat32 format). How do I disable INT 13h? I don't see this as an option anywhere. If I remove an existing drive everything works OK, so the issue looks to be related to having more than 12 drives and not the drive itself.
  18. My system will no longer boot after adding a 2TB Western Digital EARX hard drive. The bios still correctly shows to boot from the usb drive and even if I force the system to boot from the usb I get a message to reboot and select proper device. I have tried changing the usb port that the flash drive is in without any success. Motherboard is an Asrock 880GM-LE. I currently have 11 other 2TB drives (all WDC EARS) running without issue using version 4.7 Any suggestions? Thanks
  19. I think you mean high CFM vs. low dB or sone....RPM makes no difference at all. Thanks for the advice. I bought two cages, and both are fairly loud, so I don't think it is a bad fan. I'll report back if I successfully make the replacement. Tom
  20. Any advice for quieting the Norco? Would a fan speed controller be a good option? Or, is it easy enough to replace the fan with an aftermarket fan? If the fan option is best, any recommendations? Tom
  21. First time system builder looking to build basic storage system for streaming music (to Sonos) and 1080p movies. Must be expandable.
