  1. Thanks PikkonMG If I was getting 125 on a network, I'd be pretty OK with that (I won't at the moment as I'm using Powerline Adapters between the machines). However the speeds I'm getting are for internal transfer speeds - not even over the network, so if 125 is achievable over the network, I'm still a little stumped as to why I'm getting such slow speeds for internal transfers.
  2. I hadn't, but have now enabled it. Perhaps a modest improvement - it seems to surge up to 40-50, but then comes back down to ~30 Oddly, MKV files seem to transfer far faster - 110-120MB/s. Not blazing speed, but fast enough - but may just be a strong coincidence!
  3. I was fed up with the slow network transfer speeds I was getting, so I dumped a load of data on a spare 2tb drive, (ext3, I think), connected it to the SATA2 port in my unRaid appliance - mounted it using Unassigned Devices plugin, and began transferring it using Krusader. However, I'm only getting 20-25MB/s - not much better than the network speed I was getting (which was via powerline adapter, so was never going to be that fast) On the original machine, the data transferred onto it at over 100MB/s, and the disks are all modern SATA drives, so not sure where the bottleneck is. The temp drive us plugged into the SATA port on the board (SATA2). The unRaid drives are connected to the Adaptec 51245 controller - which whilst not exactly modern, surely can't be that slow? (Documentation says 3GB/s per port). Running 2x Xeon L5520s, 16GB DDR3 Ram - no other major dockers / VMs etc. The files are large (approx 1-2GB each) files - so it's not like it's thousands of small files either. Am I missing something here?
  4. I did something similar (I didn't mount it as an array, but think because I went from GPT to MBR, it screwed up nonetheless) Testdisk also did the trick for me - fantastic utility (and found it far far easier to use than the gdisk utility).
  5. Hopefully I'm not jumping the gun a little, but think it is sorted. I performed a Bios update to the Tyan S7012 motherboard (as the board keeps giving me a FF error code), and this seems to have fixed the shutdown / restart issue (though not my FF issue - which apparently means it's failing POST, even though it seems to be running just fine!)
  6. Hi there, I've got my new unRaid system setup - first disks added to the array, and first shares created. However, I'm having a problem with shutting down / restarting - it doesn't seem to want to do so. I'm using the Dynamix Buttons Plugin, but the shutdown doesn't finish. On the monitor I still have plugged in, the last line is Unmounting Remote Filesystems: but it never progresses from this, and I have to hard-shutdown to continue. I have the full log file available if required. I don't have anything fancy setup at the moment - no remote drives etc. - just the 4 disks + boot usb drive. In case it's relevant - every time I try to use the Dynamix Sleep or Temp Sensor plugins, I get a load of error messages about being unable to locate the sensors.conf file The attached image shows the shutdown process, and also the error messages referred to above (sorry about the odd angle - was trying to avoid heavy glare!) thanks for any help you can give
  7. ok, so this feels like the sort of thing that might work. Now just to try and find one nearer the £100 mark
  8. Hi, wonder if anyone can guide me a little. Just bought my first 2u rack server, for my first unRaid build. At the moment, it doesn't have a home, so looking at what rack options I have - but it's a bit of a minefield out there, so not really sure what I'm looking for. Capacity I do know I'm after something fairly small - max 18u, but 10-12 is probably about the ideal. (I have a couple of desktops to stick in there, and then just switches, routers etc). Wife would have a hissy-fit it a huge 40u turned up (treading on thin ice at is it ) Width Most racks advertise themselves as being 19in wide. My server is 17.3in wide (excluding ears) - is '19in' the standard width, designed to accommodate 17.3in wide chassis? Depth This is where I get a little muddled. It seems every rack has a different depth. My server in about 26in deep (excluding room for cabling at the rear) I presume that if I wanted something fully enclosed, I'd need one at least 30in deep, I presume, but don't seem to find that many sub-20u racks that deep. Does an enclosed one help with noise much? I presume that an enclosed one has to be cooled itself - would the noise from this be much/any better than from one rack server (which I'm noise-optimizing anyway)? If I instead when for an 'open' rack, could I then have something shallower and allow it to stick out the rear? eg, this one is open framed, but only 19in deep. I really like this idea of this one, but not yet found something similar in the UK - though I think part of the problem is not really know what I'm searching for at the moment! Thanks for any pointers!
  9. Very kind, thank you As it happens, it's going fairly well - lots of 'waiting around', but have done the pre-clear on the first 4 drives, and am about 60% into the parity build. Had a problem with the temp sensors plugin - when I restarted I had endless error messages in the console about sensors not being found. Disabled the plugin for now, and I'll tackle that one again another time!
  10. Mine says something a little different... I get the same message about shipping & calculating fees. On the confirmation page, it says it estimates no tax "Estimated tax to be collected: $0" However, just below the total, it then says So you may get lucky, but I think it's far from guaranteed. Tempted to give it a go, but I'm not desperate, so may pass for now.
  11. It certainly is - though you're of course at risk of being charged duty + vat + handling charge, I presume?
  12. Small question - if I run the trial, and then decide to upgrade, will I still be able to use the same USB key, or will I need a new one?
  13. Incidentally, for anyone in the UK, Amazon are doing the Hub version of the 8tb Seagate external drive for £205. Price seems to be as good as it gets at the moment for 8tb https://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-Backup-Desktop-External-Integrated/dp/B01IAD5ZC6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492777840&sr=8-1&keywords=8tb
  14. I pulled out an 8tb drive from one the hub versions just a couple of days ago, and contained the SMR Archive drive (this one, I think)
  15. Hi, thought I'd say hello whilst I wait to pop my unRaid cherry! Currently have a Synology DS414 - used for downloading, personal file sync / cloud sync to OneDrive, and a HP Gen8 Microserver runnning Ubuntu Server & Owncloud for Plex media (Plex itself runs on a separate machine), and for file sync of some larger folders which Synology seemed to struggle with. I've purchased a Chenbro 12-bay 2u server, with dual X5550 & 16GB Ram. Disks will be a mixture of new and existing, giving approx 50tb (excluding Parity) I'd originally planned to use Xpenology, and so to keep fan noise and heat down, I've also purchased a pair of L5520's to use instead of the X5550's. The more I read into Xpenology, the more concerned I became that whilst I can probably get it up & running fine at the moment, support for it seemed to be dwindling and would end up having to do something else in a couple of years. So I took another look at unRaid (which I'd looked into anyway beforehand), and think I'm going to give it a go and see how I get on with it. I've read various articles, watched many of the youtube videos by Jon Panozzo & Spaceinvader One, and whilst a few bits seemed a little more convoluted to setup than I felt would be the case; there was nothing that gave me too much concern. So waiting for the last few components - hopefully arriving today, allowing me to get cracking over the weekend!
