  1. I think i've managed to get a copy of the drive contents from my backup but it looks like it has totally killed my USB drive.  My Mac can detect the drive when it's connected but it totally fails to repair or format it.   Super annoying.  Didn't expect to have to replace the drive after only two months.

  2. Ok,   Will have a go using FUSE-XFS to see if I can get it to read the drive and grab the backup of the config folder from it.  Otherise i'll try setting up a simple Linux VM to do the same, else i'll come back here!

    Will report back. Thanks

    What filesystem was this disk?

That's the problem, i'm not 100% sure.  Would it have been xfs?  I precleared it and formatted it as the default filesystem to use it as an external drive.

If you have a backup of the config folder you can just prepare as a new install and copy the config back.

Well I should have as the backup location of the USB drive backup I configured was to a drive outside the array on an external disk with Unassigned Devices. I ahve just plugged that disk into my Macbook but it's unable to read it and asks me if I want to initialize it.

How can I get access to that data on the drive so I can grab the backup?

  5. Just returned from a couple of days away and turned on my Unraid machine only to find I can't connect to it or even see it on the network.  I connected a display to it to see what is going on and it's not even booting into Unraid.  It's set to boot from the USB but not doing so.   I've just connected the USB to my machine to find that it looks like the drive is empty!

    Here's some screenshots:

What I THINK COULD have happened is that I noticed that as I shut down the machine before going away, the script to backup the USB drive just started.   I'm 100% sure but could this have caused it?

Either way, any idea how I can get my machine back up and running?

  6. Hey,

"Fix Common Problems" is highlighting two problems which look to be the exact opposites of each other.  I understand what it means but not 100% sure of the best way to go about solving each.

    The issues are:

Share appdata set to cache-only, but files / folders exist on the array You should change the share's settings appropriately  or use the dolphin / krusader docker applications to move the offending files accordingly. Note that there are some valid use cases for a set up like this. In particular: THIS
Share Cyberman Time Machine set to not use the cache, but files / folders exist on the cache drive

You should change the share's settings appropriately or use the dolphin / krusader docker applications to move the offending files accordingly. Note that there are some valid use cases for a set up like this. In particular: THIS

For the first one, I have been into Krusader and found the user directory containing each of my shares. I can see an "appdata" directory in there.  How do I get this sorted?  Is it just a case of dragging certain items around?   I'm just a little confused.

    Thanks,

That's it.  Disable thumbnail generation will lower the space requirements of plex.  But, I don't use Plex, so really can't say if it will delete existing thumbnails.

Also, an alternative is that you've got download(s) being saved into appdata.  Which in and by itself isn't an issue, and would ultimately resolve itself once the download is completed and then moved to the array.

I've been trying multiple things regarding this to try to solve the issue but my Cache drive is still full at 119Gb.

Anyone have any idea how I can fix this up?

Best guess ATM is that you've got Plex generating thumbnails, etc which really balloons its hard drive space.  What's the "Compute Size" if you go to shares and click on Compute Size for the appdata share

    That could possibly be it:

    yellow-on.pngappdata application data - - - 106 GB 2.14 TB explore.png
    Cache:         106 GB 660 MB
    Disk 1:         2.51 MB 1.64 TB

    How can I resolve it?

You can run mover (Main, Array Operations, Run Mover).  If that doesn't fix it up, then you've possibly got misconfigured useCache settings on the shares.  Barring that, post your diagnostics

Running the mover does not help.  I can't see anything wrong with cache setting but i'm honestly not 100% sure what I need to be looking for.  I've attached my diagnostics.

  10. Hey,

Fix Common Problems is showing the following error: "Cache Disk free space is less than the cache floor setting".   I've updated that setting to "2GB" and the minimum free space option set on each share is also "2GB".   I've tried to run the Mover manually but it doesn't move anything. The cache disk is a 120Gb drive.

When checking the log I see:

  11. I've just started using Duplicati to backup my Photographs folder which is approx 1.5Tb to an external drive using Unassigned Devices.

    My question is thus:

Does Duplicati work in a similar manner to Time Machine where the first backup takes ages and then from that point on only modifications are backed up and it works out what is part of the most recent backup etc or not?

It will just take so long to complete the backup each time.

    Thanks,

    Neil

  12. Hey,

I'm running a preclear on an unassigned 3TB drive, it's done pre read, zeroing and I checked it when I woke up this morning and it just says: "unRAID's signature on the MBR is valid" . The preview is saying that post read has started but does not show a percentage.  Is it stuck or will it continue eventually?

UPDATE:  I've just stopped and resumed the pre clear operation and it now just stays on "starting". The preview still shows started post read but I don't see any progress.

    What am I to do?

  13. Still looking into this build and someone recommended getting one of the new Coffee Lake chips. So I found the 8700 but as Coffee Lake is Hex-Core I thoughts i'd compare it to the 8500 i5. Looking at the comparison below it looks like it fares reasonably well.

Would the 8500 be suitable for my usecase above? What do you all think?

I would like to recommend that you post up a new thread in this sub-forum and ask this same question with a link to your proposed pcpartspicker list.

This way the focus of the discussion and the thread area should attract folks who have some real insight into the selection process for a system to meet your needs.  In a sense, you have 'hijacked' your own thread by introducing a second line of inquiry!   Since this line of discussion was introduced almost as an aside but is still quite important, a new thread is really the way to proceed.

Yes, I suppose I have just hijacked my own topic. Oh well, new topic created in the correct place.  I'm still going to try that old build next time i'm back home but very very seriously considering new hardware.

    Thankyou so much,

    Neil

  15. Due to my current issues with getting Unraid to even boot, I am seriously considering purchasing some new hardware to get around my problems.

Can someone give this a run over and see if this all looks suitable. My aims for using Unraid is to have it as a file server, a time machine backup destination, a Plex media server (pretty much solely a single stream, only me here) and quite possibly a Windows 10 VM. The VM, more for playing about with, I really don;t know what i'd be using it for just yet but it'd be nice to have it if I end up fidning a use for it at a later date.

I've just chosen a pretty much random motherboard so if anyone has any decent suggestions i'd be very happy to take a look at them.  I was considering at first an i5-7500 but someone suggested a boost to an i7. Is the one in the spec below suitable?

I'd be happy with any and all suggestions.

    Kind regards,

    Neil

  16. Will give that a go when I get back.   Would a i7-7700 be a better choice CPU?   Also, can you reccomend a decnet motherboard, I'd like ti to have an Intel nic which is ok to find but i'd also prefer an onboard USB port but this is not 100% required.

    Any suggestions?

Yes, very. All I can suggest now is to try an even earlier version of unRAID. If I can find the installer zip for one of the 6.2 versions I'll put it in my Dropbox and add the link. Or maybe @Frank1940 can find one of his.

Awesome.  I'll give that a go when you post the link.

You successfully booted from an Ubuntu USB stick earlier. Does that still work, or have you completely lost the ability to boot from USB?

Booting from an Ubuntu USB works perfectly. Confusing eh?

You've changed a lot of BIOS settings back and forth in your experimenting. It might be worth clearing the CMOS and starting again from a known state. I like to keep notes as I change things.

I have tried a complete reset of the BIOS and nothing I do works

I have a wild thought.  Download version 6.3.5 and create a USB drive using that version see if it boots.  If it does boot, then copy over the bz* files from the version that you wnat to use and see if that boots.

If that doesn't work, let me look for an earlier version.  (I use a UBS-to-SD_Card adapter with a valid GUID.)  I could e-mail you a copy of it.

Just tried manually creating a disk for 6.3.5 and it still fails.    What is confusing me is the fact that When I first tried the trial version in November of last year, the hardware was identical, I downloaded the current version as of November, made a disk with the creator tool and it just worked. No special settings or anything.  Now, no disks I make work and I can no longer get my trial drive to boot either.

I just cannot understand why one day it boots and the next it doesn't. I honestly cannot think of anything that changed.
