  1. I don’t think you will get it to change its wording “hard drive c:” in the boot sequence if that’s what your asking … that’s like hard coded into the bios. Your usb thumb drive is “ hard drive c.” That’s another way of saying “hard drive Root directory” looking for a boot loader. I don’t think you have an issue here… as long as it detects the “hard drive” which is your usb flash drive and boots to it. You might have to check / enable hard drive C in that box. during partitioning of the usb drive it’s created on a fat32 file system and partition like a traditional hard drive would be so it can be read by the bios. have you tried to Reboot the server Press F11 to enter the boot menu Select the Boot Menu option It will scan for boot devices Go to Hard disk using Arrow keys This is the point where you get a secondary menu with the option to select the USB attached device Select it and press Enter. It will then boot from USB.
  2. It’s not going to be shown in the boot sequence, but the usb drive will read as a hard drive. So that is the 1st boot sequence. Hard drives boot first and below your hard disk sequence looks good it should boot every time to the usb drive first. Looks good to me. Remember this server was built for windows server 2008r2 and windows server 2012 as a premium upgrade and only compatible with OS’s listed in the lifecycle controller. wait till you set up iDRAC heheheheh…. Then you can remotely manage via IP url and use a virtual monitor on another computer and with the Dell BMC command line software you can use command prompt to manually adjust the fan speeds to like 35-42% so it’s less noisy. another pointer… when adding hard disks to the dell server, because of the virtual raid Perc card you first have to go into the Bios and convert the hard drive to “non raid” use. then unraid will see it later on when adding it. It’s cool stuff welcome to enterprise Life.
  3. So I have my usb plugged into the motherboard on my T420. Otherwise you have to use… the front USB ports??? If I remember correctly. The back ports are on a different bus controller and can’t boot usb drives from the back. I also think my unraid stick I removed the uefi flag at creation. and the usb drive if petitioned right is reading like a hard drive if you have a c drive listed it sounds like you have to remove the drives from dell virtual raid. the drives will wipe and be converted to non raid disks, that’s what you want. Your not using the traditional raid unraid will take care of that.
  4. Do what it says, rest your bios settings back to default, turn off UEFI, clear your Bios logs. Your dealing with a enterprise dell server it’s a short learning curve. Might want to look into dell support articles, for for the t power edge servers. unraid can’t run uefi it’s a syslinux issue nothing to do with unraid. the dell power edge only runs off of ECC ram you can mix match speeds but not different types like you can’t put ECC type-R with regular ECC there a bios settings for it. I would just reset to factory defaults and play with it later, your going to be spending 1/2 day on it.
  5. ????? What....🤦‍♂️why would you go through all that, use Linux to create Linux... I don’t get it... help me understand why Limetech and Unraid engineers came up with a simple and end user friendly way to download create and write to a usb. I don’t know about you but I like get rid of a headache in a few minutes than spend all day with the headache. listen, unraid UEFI cannot be done on the Dell T/R X20’s. That’s it, accept your server fate and use BIOS only. Problem solved. Or build a “newer” server, because for something that is over 9 years old almost 10 is past its prime, deprecated, obsolete and retired. The Dell T/R x20’s servers serve its purpose, nothing more nothing less and are not “fancy”. Keep it simple. these servers once supported windows server 2012,a UEFI OS and Dell has a list of Linux distros RHEL/Debian based that are UEFI compatible. Just For some reason Syslinux is not an enterprise distro that Dell will recognize as UEFI. It’s not a Unraid problem, it’s a Dell problem the OS was not meant for this server. I challenge anyone to prove me wrong using a non unraid syslinux install and let me know how it goes and if it works submit the results to Limetech. don’t do this suggested long and crazy usb install using PopOS. there is a free and Open source solution using the Unraid Flash Creator utility —————————————- Using this program, you can easily convert almost any USB flash device into an Unraid boot device. In addition, the flash creator will give you the option to toggle some advanced settings such as loading a beta release, renaming your server hostname, setting a static IP address for your server pre-boot, and even toggling support for UEFI booting. Plug the USB flash device into your Mac or PC 1. Go to the downloads page. 2. Download the USB Flash Creator to your Mac or PC and run it. This tool is an open source program digitally signed by Lime Technology, Inc. 3. Customize any options you desire and select the flash device you wish to use from the drop-down. 4. Click Write to create the bootable flash.
  6. I have a thought as I am looking for a solution as well. R-pi as a Remote Desktop “thin client” I’m sure Xrdp in Debian can do the job of remotely connect to your windows KVM host or something like WTware (gotta pay if you can’t program a UI to do something as end user friendly as possible as this with automated start up. https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/raspberry-pi-windows-thin-client/ hdmi connection from the pi to any TV/monitor input for visual astronomy. now for the gaming part. R-pi has usb connections can handle HID devices and if this xrdp or WTware is anything like MS RDP then it should pass through usb HID devices. I’m actually looking to get into iRacing and a Logitech steering wheel. I have no idea how the force feedback will work, any lag, or if any of this will work. but the wife would love my company in our bedroom suite and not spend any more hours in the home office. So I thought, let’s bring the server and VM’s to the bedroom with RDP displayed on the 60in 4K tv and work on my hobby’s in here. just a thought. Reply with any feedback/suggestions
  7. I fixed this issue by turning off wireguard VPN.. how weird.. wtf... cant have VPN then... so stupid
  8. when using an encrypted Volume, Does the array have to be mounted first ( Key File/Passphrase entered ) before Wireguard starts its services and ready to use?
  9. definition: OpenStack software controls large pools of compute, storage, and networking resources throughout a datacenter, managed through a dashboard. In a server farm of 2 or more server you would feel that if you wanted to add additional resources, cpus, ram, disk storage space when one server is utilizing 100% of it, to expand in elasticity, OpenStack is the option. additionally in my case I just decommissioned a cpu crypto rig on 2 rack servers, I’m having a hard time reconditioning them for another purpose, I was thinking why can I not add theses servers to Unraid and add to the pooled resources, probably because it does not exist, why not? If it’s about money and licensing I’ll pay , but it would be silly to pay for 2 or more separate licenses and have separate Unraid servers when it could be just one UI. example: 1 Unraid server 24cores 64gb ram, 9 TB storage server 2. & 3, 24cores 64gb ram 2 TB storage w/Unraid OpenStack 72 cores, 192gb ram, 13tb storage
  10. Legacy auto boots on the dell t420, and I’ve given up on uefi boot mode. I’m sure there missing impi stuff the Unraid could work on. It be nice to control the fan speeds and other area on PowerEdge servers. I’m not sure where you have the unraid usb plugged into but mine is inserted internal. You could use The front USB ports as they are on same usb hub controller, either one is fine. The rear usb ports are on a different usb hub controller that do not communicate to the bootable USB ports and I can see where you may have to select manually ever time. Also another possibility is that you do not have lifecycle controller configured correctly/ maybe you do or maybe you forgot to remove the uefi flag on the usb. https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/sln292433/dell-poweredge-no-boot-device-available-is-displayed-during-startup?lang=en Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. Most common residential ISP's in the past millennium turn and even at this present time participate in banning outgoing port 25 with absolutely no support to accommodate your request to open it. Make sure you thank the people who spam and send out 10's of thousands of news letters a day promoting bed bath and beyond coupons. If you are lucky and have a registered business in a residential area paying for Business Class service in a residential area Then this should not be an issue.. Q: What about using a SMTP relay, i.e sendgrid, sending 100 emails p/day for free possible with Poste.io Free version? FQ: Does Poste.io Free version provide support [in its GUI for an SMTP relay? [EDIT] A: yes! A: Q: MX records, Pointing to DuckDNS, achieve Static results? [EDIT] A: yes! FQ: what would you put for a SPF record? Q: How much Ram are we talking about when using Poste.io? MS Exchange 2019 Memory Varies depending on Exchange roles that are installed: • Mailbox: 128GB • Edge Transport: 64GB minimum recommended. MS Exchange 2016 requires 8 GB of RAM for the mailbox role and 4 GB for the Edge Transport role minimum recommended. A: Using the Poste.io demo is showing "Used memory 6GB" I am assuming that can go higher!
  12. Interesting, after my motherboard replacement , I have not bothered to update the bios from its original version v1 or lifecycle controllers iDrac, I’ve succumbed to the fact to just leave shit the way it is using legacy BIOS boot for unraid. It’s unfortunate that at the time of setting up that I was not able to boot UEFi and struggled with my setup. Everything been up and running 24/7 and at the end of the day that’s all that matters even though this was not my initial set up plan. Good looks and when time comes to make a change I’ll take a look at that settings once more. I’ve had some serious ptsd Over this and I’m good now.
  13. So New (previously owned) Motherboard Came in, Yesterday, All is working Took me a bit to set up the BIOS legacy boot... Had to Diskpart the USB and copy the backup over to the same USB drive Diskpart list Disk select disk 1 clean create partition primary select partition 1 active format fs=fat32 quick label="UNRAID" exit And then I had to run the makebootable.bat file Server Back up and running and I am defiantly afraid to do any updates to the system board now.. I don't think ill find another T420 Mobo for $50 again. I did test UEFI, See it boots to the EFI just fine. Just the unRAID menu for bzroot is not good..I have no Idea how to fix that. But Legacy it is.. And I am not moving away from Unraid.
  14. [Day 3] The Update I did, timed out for unknown length of time, I woke up in the middle of the night to a screaming server (All Fans Full Blast) ready to take off. iDrac Initializing...stuck problem Soo Firmware update basically failed, So Server is Down for the count. I am attempting via Dell's UEFI bootable media to patch and update the firmware specifically for this server: https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/sln296511/updating-dell-poweredge-servers-via-bootable-media-iso?lang=en https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/sln296810/creating-a-bootable-usb-device-with-rufus-for-updating-dell-poweredge-servers?lang=en https://dell.box.com/BootableT420 Read that this update method could take more than an hour... Meanwhile the Server fans at full speed is kinda soothing and relaxing... [Update] after 3 attempts getting apply_bundles.sh invalid Created a WinPE bootable USB http://windowsmatters.com/2017/10/02/gandalfs-win10pe-x64-redstone-2-build-15063-version-10-01-2017/ To attempt to download and install the idrac.exe firmware and I am blessed with another error missing some tbs.dll noticing that I need windows Server OS. Pulled all Drives in Raid array, Inserted a mirror copy of Windows 2012 server. But... I do not remember the Admin Login creds. Circled around to https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/sln296511/updating-dell-poweredge-servers-via-bootable-media-iso?lang=en and Downloaded the older (month difference) iso , Used Rufus and Failed 90%. diskpart USB, clean, full format. Encountered errors at 98%, lost a USB Drive. Square 1. Downloading Windows Server 2012..... New USB... To be Continued..............
  15. So I removed Mushkin Higher speed non-ECC Ram, Same issue. I did Check the USB and I have FSCK000-FSCK0010 REC files... I back them up. I even backed up the whole USB drive. Created a new 6.4.9 USB wEFI overwrote the Config folder with backup. Same. This is part Why I really would like UEFI support from the Kernel command line. Server BIOS is not the same as a traditional Desktop BIOS and UEFI just Boots right up no issues or questions asked. If you forget to enable the tiniest Legacy BIOS server setting it throws everything offline. In this event before I turn off the lights, thrown in the towel and call it a night, I have discovered that LifeCycle Controller needed to be updated along with 6 others(Driver Pac, RAID update, NIC update, iDRAC update, UEFI DIAG update) .. Other than just the BIOS.. So I am running that. Still open to any suggestions to try for a resolution. https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/sln292343/how-to-update-dell-server-using-the-integrated-lifecycle-controller-update-platform-lcc-update?lang=en Giving that a try next... Not keeping my hopes up though.
  16. BIOS update has been recently updated to the latest revision [ PowerEdge T420 BIOS Version 2.4.2 (07 Apr 2015)] when troubleshooting the BETA 6.4.0 R19 UEFI support. That was my first instinct. Server was released in 2013 and I am the 2nd owner. I Totally understand that Legacy is the "Workaround" Solution However If I am going to buy an unraid license on there latest stable release that supports UEFI, I would expect that UEFI work on older hardware that supports UEFI not specifically "newer". The choice for syslinux is the same reason how VMware ESXi has there trial and license-key setup. Its just secure from a loss prevention standpoint. I do Have additional, 2x4GB of ECC Ram on each bank (Error-correcting code memory) installed pulled from a T410 I had. I'll attempt to remove it and leave the stock 16gb Ram see if that makes a difference. ---------------------------- Dell PowerEdge T420 | 24gb ECC Ram | 2x 12core Xeon E5-2420 | 5 Drives (1TB parity | 3TB | 500GB cache) Its a Power House for OpenFLIXR
  17. Failed to Allocate memory for Kernel command line, bailing out booting kernel failed: bad file number -UnRaid Trial- 18days remaining at the time of writing this. Created a 6.3.5 USB using the USB creator tool for windows. Started the Trial for 2 weeks with MBR BIOS boot. Saw that the new stable 6.4.0 was out, used the WebGUI to update Reboot required Upon loaded WebGUI enabled UEFI in the Flash media on main page (so far so good) Reboot (Set Server BIOS settings to default) Changed my Servers BIOS system setting to boot to UEFI Deleted previous UEFI boot menu paths (Windows, ESXi..etc) Created a UEFI boot entry pointing to /EFI/Boot/Boot64.efi (1st attempt I did not create a UEFI boot path same result) Rebooted server UnRaid Boots up in UEFI Auto boot count down loading bzroot...ok "Failed to Allocate memory for Kernel command line, bailing out booting kernel failed: bad file number" I had this same issue prior to starting the trial creating a 6.4.0RC19 Boot usb. Just I knew there was not going to be any support for a BETA now that 6.4.0 is stable any Ideas or possible solutions. I should also note that all of the boot options including memtest all have the same failed message as above. I can only Tab to edit >/bzimage initrd=/bzroot_ I really don't want to be stuck using legacy boot mode. Thanks in advance to any suggestions or help. [EDIT] 01/16/2018 @9:55p So after a little research apparently This is an old issue from 05/2015 with Syslinux and Dell Poweredge R410. T420, R320 servers with no resolution? Though why would esxi Work, it is also syslinux UEFI bootable? I will find an answer combining our CPU's will get there faster.
