  5. try this. settings>display preferences>"View of spun-down disks". play with this and click apply see if it changes anything.
  6. cycle #2 completed with no changes to sectors or pending sectors. raw read error rate changed from 24 to 108. i put the drive in a different hot swap bay to eliminate cable/port/dock as the cause and started cycle #3.
  7. after cycle #1 no sectors pending or re-allocated but raw read err rate went from 0 to 24. cycle 2 not complete.

  12. so pass #2 failed after the zeroing of the drive. got this email this morning. Preclear Disk /dev/sdh FAILED!!!!. no idea why it failed though. will find out when i get home. guess i have TWO WD20EARS drives to RMA...
