Drive keeps going red

Featured Replies

I've had this issue now for months it seems.  This one particular drive (it's a 2TB WD EARS drive with jumpers 6-7) keeps "red dotting" a few days after I rebuild it.  I'm always able to bring it back to life by powering down, physically disconnecting the drive, powering back up, re-enabling it, and doing a rebuild.  But then 2-3 days later, it always goes red again.  It's the newest drive in my system, and it's also the only drive in the system on this 3 in 2 backplane - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817993019.

I'm on v4.5...attached is my most recent syslog that includes the incident happening (disk3 is the problem disk)...

Any ideas?

Have you run any SMART tests on the drive?

What are your power supply (PSU) specs and how old is it as well as how many total drives do you have connected to it?

Also, have you tried replacing the SATA cables to it or making sure they're securely fastened?

I tried running a SMART test through unMenu at one point, but didn't really know what I was doing.  I tried "Short Smart Test", and just got a message at the bottom saying something like "Short test can take minutes or hours to run."  Then what?

My PSU is definitely a concern of mine, it's only a 250W, about 5 years old, but I'm only running 5 total drives (1 parity, 1 cache, 3 data).  I've tried about 5 different SATA cables.

I'm actually in the process of researching upgrading my case to a larger one as the one I'm using now is about maxed on space.  I also have a spare 450W PSU that I plan on using.  And due to the Dell proprietary hardware in my existing case, I'll probably also be getting a new mobo and processor.  So if all of that will fix my problem, great, but I wanted to make sure everything was solid before making all these changes.  I remember having issues getting that EARS drive going when I first added it to the array, until I read about that jumper setting stuff about it.

Unless my memory is failing you mean you jumpered Pins 7and8 not 6and7 right?

I honestly have no idea what would happen if the wrong pins where jumpered, but I figured I'd make sure I ask to make sure its just a typo not what your really running.

Yeah sorry, I meant 7-8.  I believe it's the two vertical to the left if you hold the drive face-down.

Well, even after upgrading my server all around (Cooler Master 690 II Advanced, Asus M4A785-M, Sempron, older 450W PSU I had (compared to the much older 250W I was using), and even upgrading from v4.5 to v4.7, after about 4 days I got the red ball again on the same EARS drive.  Syslog attached.

I guess it's safe to say the problem wasn't the backplane (which it's no longer in), the SATA controller (which it's no longer connected to), or the PSU (which is different).

Any ideas what to do next?  SMART report comes back fine on the drive, at least last time I ran it.

Buy a new drive. If it proves reliable RMA the old drive.

It cold be a bad cable or SATA port. Try changing these.
