February 19, 201115 yr Just wondering on your thoughts on using a device such as sold by dealextreme: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/industrial-40pins-ide-flash-dom-disk-on-module-4gb-55351. This device connects to the IDE header as a drive. It seems to be suited for an unRAID server. Tey also have smaller 4gig and 2gig versions.
February 19, 201115 yr My server and desktops have 0 total IDE ports so it's worthless... Just my thoughts.
February 19, 201115 yr It could be used to boot from, but it cannot replace the boot flash since it's not usb. It could be used to backup the /boot flash. It could be used as a small cache, but I really do not think it's effective for that. It could be used to hold specific applications mounted on a specific path or for swap. For that cost you could get a usb flash or a fast cache drive. I wouldn't invest in them unless there is a reason you want to boot very fast. I might invest in a SATA SSD drive and a bracket to mount it internally.

I use a 4Gig Compact Flash module in an IDE to CF adapter in one of my motherboards. The $43 price for an 8Gig is not terrible, but you can do better with an IDE to CF adapter and your own CF card. I use one of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822998003&cm_re=CF_adapter-_-22-998-003-_-Product pair it with this and you have the same 8Gig. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820157029&cm_re=cf_memory-_-20-157-029-_-Product CF Adapter 6.99 + 1.99 shipping 8Gig CF 14.99 + 2.99 shipping Total = $26.96
