Featured Replies

I don't know the first thing about AMD chips so please forgive me if this is not a great deal.  I just know a lot of people here like them for power consumption.

SuperBiiz.com (eWiz.com) has the AMD Athlon X2 Dual-Core Processor 5200+ 2.3GHz AM3 Desktop Processor (OEM) for $30.58 after Coupon Code: PADDY15 (Exp Soon). $2.35 Shipping. Tax in CA.

John

I saw this deal on Slickdeals and I came to post it, but you beat me. This is an even better deal than the Sempron 140, it just uses more power.

Ordered one. anyone have a suggestion/deal on a motherboard for this?

The Biostar A760G M2+ has been a recommended board for a while now. It uses older DDR2 RAM, but that's cheaply available on ebay. I haven't found a similarly priced, available board that takes DDR3 though.

DDR3 is cheaper by half.  Take the MB + RAM and do the comparison again.

Thanks jonodon.  I ordered one to try it out.

If you have a relatively small array and a Microcenter nearby, the AMD X2 250 + Biostar A780L3G AM3 760G for $58 is a great deal.  Seems like the processor is a little faster, with the same 65W power consumption.  There's only 4 SATA ports on that motherboard, though, which is why it's more attractive for small arrays.  Takes DDR3, though.

Any boards you'd recommend? Nothing i3 though, that's way outside my budget right now.

I'm assuming this is for an unRAID server.  How many drives are you to wanting to have?

If you want a cheaper setup then AMD is the best way to go.

775 board are still around but most are not DDR3, 1156 board (like the i3 5x0) are going to be discontinued once the 1155 chipset issues are resolved.

If I was buying today, this is what I'd get:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813153186 - selling for $69.99

Cheap, dual 16x PCI-e that is proven to run the 8-port supermicro controller card.

I've also heard good thing about the BIOSTAR A760G M2+, but they seem harder to find (check Raj's prototype design thread for ebay seller link).

Yes, unRAID server. Max of 15 drives for this build.

That looks pretty good, the only thing I'd be worried about is the non-solid capacitors on the board. The caps on my video card started popping one by one less than 2 years after I installed the card, but it was out of warranty so my $120 card was a waste.

Some literature claims it has semi-solid capacitors.... whatever that is! :).
