Network performance

Featured Replies

When I am copying files to my unRaid server, I am unable to play music files on any clients without major stuttering. This happens even if I am copying "movies" which are physically stored on a separate disk than my music. Is this normal?

Specs:

unRaid Plus 4.7

Supermicro Atom 525 motherboard

4GB ram

6 1.5/2.0TB hard drives

2TB WD EARS as parity

No cache drive

gigabit ethernet connection to rest of network (although I have no way of proving it is actually operating at gigabit speeds)

It is not normal. Check your clients to make sure they are running at 1000MBps. Telnet or use the console on the server and enter

ethtool eth0

Also post a syslog. zip it if needed.

You could also use the iperf unMenu package to test your bandwidth if you think you are having bandwidth/throughput problems.  More details about it are in this thread.

If you don't see the package listed in the unMenu package manager, you may need to update unmenu to get the config files for iperf.

It also depends on what your clients are, how they are connected (wired, wireless), and how they are accessing the files.  Are they accessing shares directly, or is there a UPnP server application sitting somewhere (and if so, where)?
