March 28, 201115 yr Bah, this is the response I thought I was going to get, but was hopeful. Oh Well. Just checked with our Germany HQ, the Rebel9 & Rebel 12 are Europe limited editions, sorry that we don't have the quote for you. However Rebel9 PRO Series or T-Series are open for all countries, please come back to me if you are interested in those series too. Best regards, Mit freundlichen Grüßen, Juno CHEN
March 28, 201115 yr Author Just checked your sig as suggested ... now I understand why so many ppl are interested in this case ... awesome build! I'm learning heaps from reading your original post. Thanks!
March 28, 201115 yr Author Found it! In Australia/Asia it's called iCute (*sigh*) ... anyway, can pick one up from a local shop in Sydney for $A134 (=$US134) ... doesn't come with any of the fans, but I'm gonna follow bjp999's build with 4 x 5-in-3's = 26 hdds, and those cages have their own fans. So I'll just need to buy some case fans (readily available here). http://icute.com.tw/english/A18.html
March 28, 201115 yr Make sure you understand the mods you will have to do to get this case to handle 4 5-in-3s before you start. I can give more details this evening (US time).
March 29, 201115 yr Mods to make Sharkoon Rebel 12 hold 4 5in3s: 1 - Remove overhang http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/7820/dsc1448x.jpg[/img] http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/215/dsc1453u.jpg[/img] http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/8766/dsc1455j.jpg[/img] 2 - Trim the bezel http://i34.tinypic.com/54eh38.jpg[/img] http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/469/dsc1457i.jpg[/img] http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/2299/dsc1461x.jpg[/img] 3 - But the problem is, even after trimming the bezel like this, the tolerance was still too tight to mount the bezel. Even after some extraordinary measures, I could not make it work. Look at his picture closely and you'll see that the top of the bezel is torqued badly. so, I gave the bezel a lobotomy. The missing part is easily attached (velcro, double sided tape, etc.) to the top of the 5in3. If you pursue this, you may come up with a better solution than I did. But the overall result looks pretty good. I'm on the lookout for a matching piece of plastic that I can cut and have it attach to both sides of the top of the bezel. Then the project will be complete! Good luck!
March 29, 201115 yr How do you get 26 hard drives from 4x 5in3's 4 5in3s = 20 http://i33.tinypic.com/344blhh.jpg[/img] + 6 internal slots = 26
March 29, 201115 yr looks good from here. 1 question: did you cut or bend the 5.25" supports in the case. And did you have to do ALL of them for all the cages to fit (as opposed to skipping a couple)?
March 29, 201115 yr Forgot to mention it, but yes, had to bend every single one of them, except the very bottom ones. In my old case I could leave the tabs in place between the cages, but not on this one.
March 29, 201115 yr Hi What are the advantages of this case compared to others - why are so many people interested in this? Click my sig, baby! Did you have to do any mods to make the 4 in 3s fit? I got this case from a source in TW for a bit under $100 USD. I forgot to get the fan mounts though.

They are just internal brackets, not removable trays. These: http://www.frozencpu.com/products/7904/noi-20/Scythe_Hard_Disk_Stabilizer_x4_-_HDD_Noise_Reduction.html

You might have issues with the top slot having the screwhole you need, but you could drill your own hole, or perhaps that screw is not necessary to hold the cage securely. Consider your cooling strategy if you use these.
March 30, 201115 yr Author @bjp999 ... can you list the other components of your build please (eg motherboard, pci-e expander cards, ram etc etc). Also, did you replace the 5-in-3 fans - I've heard the original ones are very noisy? If so, which fans did you replace them with? What about case cooling - which fans did you use? Thanks! Cheers Toby

Cheers Toby Motherboard: SuperMicro C2SEE Processor: Pentium E6700 (3.2 GHz) - This is the "new" E6700 called Pentium. Fast and cheap - good combo Ram: 4G Kingston DDR3 Controllers: SuperMicro AOC-SASLP-MV8, IBM BR10i, Areca ARC-1200 (I'd recommend 2xSuperMicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 over IBM BR10i (because it does not support >2.2TB drives). Also, the Areca is a splurge, but I have my parity drive running off a RAID-0 pair installed on that card and it does help performance. I also have a RAID-1 drive configured there for particularly sensitive as well as frequently accessed data. The Hong Kong 2 port PCIe x1 card works fine.) Drive Cages: 4 x SuperMicro CSE-M35T-1 (I am running stock fans, but my server lives in an unfinished basement and noise is not an issue for me. It is not quiet, but not an annoying loud IMO. Case Fan: I am running a 120 mm fan, thinking of buying a 140mm but 120mm working fine.
March 30, 201115 yr Author @bjp999 ... great thanks. Just picked up my iCute Super18 case (= sharkoon); now it's time to place a big order with newegg for everything else...

You should be able to see this in the photos in my build thread.
April 3, 201115 yr What is the power consumption? I'm curious how this compares to the system I setup with five external multibay enclosures. I have twenty drives in the five enclosures and two drives in the unRAID case. I'm drawing around 210 watts with all drives spinning right now and a pretty high 130 watts at idle. If/when I do a second unRAID build I wouldn't mind having all the drives in one enclosure like the OP.
April 3, 201115 yr The power consumption has nothing to do with the case, obviously. It has to do with MB, CPU, PSU, Memory, controllers, #drives, RPM of drives, fans, and overclocking / other BIOS settings. It is a bit hard to get true apples to apples comparisons. I have my server plugged into a UPS that is also powering my router/modem, 24 port switch, a DVR with external drive, and maybe a couple other things too. It was pulling 118 watts with all drives spun down. Will try and run a more isolated test sometime to get a true idle wattage. I'd estimate around 70-80.
April 5, 201115 yr That came out great. I love it. That case gives me a serious case of the "i wants". I have the Coolermaster Stacker and was planning something home grown to get an extra 3 drives in that bottom area.
April 8, 201115 yr Author Yeah got my iCute18 (aka Sharkoon) all prepped for my soon-to-arrive electronic parts. bjp999's photos inspired me to go google "dremel" ... had never heard of that tool before. So I bought one and it's awesome for cutting plastic and metal. Not a bad result for my first time (well, nothing that a bit of black adhesive tape couldn't fix ha!) @bjp999 - I can confirm that the Norco SS-500 cages have the same height problem as the Supermicros (ie bulging up a bit at the top) ... seems to be caused by the positioning of the metal spacers that sit under each cage ... instead of removing the black plastic bit on the top of the case like you did, I dremeled (is that a verb?) a cut 2/3 in on each end so as to leave the plastic piece still attached, and let the topmost cage just kinda pivot the plastic bit up - doesn't look bad. Pity about Supermicro's advice that you shouldn't use 3xMV8 port expanders at the same time ... so I think I'll try the 2xMV8+1xBR10i combo that bjp999 suggested to me. Back to the case - yep, it's really nice and once I screwed in all the Norco cages and used a few well-placed cable ties to really bolt things down, the whole setup is rock solid - I literally shook the case quite severely and nothing rattled/moved at all. Also note, the screws do NOT penetrate to touch the drives as Raj suggested with the Norco cages but a different case - ie the Sharkoon + Norco combo is fine. First power-up test is tomorrow (no motherboard) - I want to test airflow/cooling/noise ... I'm especially keen to see how much air the monster 250mm fan moves (and how noisy it is!!) So far I'm impressed and definitely would recommend this case to anyone wanting to build a monster storage array.
