September 21, 20214 yr Hi All! Before i start with my question here my server: MB: Asus B450m Gaming CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 APU: Gigabyte GTX 1050-Ti Memory: Crucial 4x 8GB 2666 MHZ (dual channel) Cache: SSD Samsung EVO 500 GB Parity: 1x WD40EFRX (4TB) Array: 3x WD40EZRZ (4TB) + 1x ST3000DM008 I have 02 USB 3.0 4TB Seagate that i want to add to this array. Why do i need to shuck them? also i don´t have free bays in my case so is there any technical reason that can´t i just plug in the usb port and add to the array? Or should i buy a new case with more bays and shuck those external drives? Thank you! Leo.
September 21, 20214 yr Couple of things. First, USB connections have been shown to be unstable long term and that results in the drives being dropped from the array. Second, as I recall, you can't get SMART data back from the drive using the USB connection.

Possibly a frequent occurrence if you try to use USB in the parity array. 2 hours ago, Frank1940 said: Second, as I recall, you can't get SMART data back from the drive using the USB connection And other possible issues such as disks being presented to Unraid with non-standard sizes

It means that Unraid cannot monitor the disks health. No chance of an advance warning if a drive is having issues.

SMART (Look in Wikipedia under S.M.A.R.T.) is the monitoring system used by all disk manufacturers to report back on the state of the health of a hard drive (or solid state drive). You can get to this report by double-clicking on the Disk # under the 'DEVICE' column on either the Main or Dashboard tab of the GUI. If you look at the "SMART Settings" section/tab of this report for any disk, you can see the attributes that Unraid will monitor and report any change via the Notification system.
