unRAID Media Server: Watch 2 Movies

Featured Replies

Hi,

As many here, I use my unRAID machine as server to store all my movies and TV shows. I have 2 separate XBMC media center setups in Living Room and in Bedroom. One is an ATV2, the other an Intel Atom Ion XBMC Live.

At the moment, I cannot watch separate movies in the 2 media centers simultaneously. The movies play very choppy, basically un-watchable. If this normal behavior?

My movies are for the most part 720p, and unRAID and the two XBMC devices are connected via ethernet (no wifi). My router is gigabit speed, and I have CAT 6 cable. My unRAID machine is a Celeron Dual Core w/ 1 GB RAM.

Would I benefit from a faster processor for unRAID?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

It is not normal and you don't need a faster unRAID processor. What exactly is your network configuration?

On unRAID enter: ethtool eth0

Check the connect speed at your clients.

Thank you guys. I am glad that unRAID is able to do more than two movies.

Here are my results for ethtool eth0 on unRAID:

Settings for eth0:
       Supported ports: [ TP ]
       Supported link modes:   10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full

Sorry but I am not sure how to check the speed at my ATV2 and XBMC Live clients...ethtool eth0 does not work.

Edit: I installed ethtool in XBMC Live and this is what it reports:

Figuring out how to install on ATV2...

well your unraid connects to the network at 1 gb/s

but your xbmc live only at 100 mb/s

is he capable of 1gb/s ?

you can set it to connect at 1gb/s if it is capable

ethtool -s eth0 speed 1000 duplex full autoneg off

should do the trick

if you google a bit you can find how to set it in the scripts to always boot at 1gb/s

here is an example -> http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/howto-linux-add-ethtool-duplex-settings-permanent.html
