data taking more space on BTRFS disk

Featured Replies

I tried to copy 3.71 TB of data from an XFS formatted disk to a 4 TB btrfs formatted disk but had to stop the copy because it was pretty obvious that it was going to over fill the disk.

I used this command-

rsync -av --progress /mnt/disks/deluge/ /mnt/torrent/

Both disks are 4 TB. Does data take more space on btrfs?

No, but if there are sparse files on source you need to use the --sparse flag or it will take much more space.

I dont think there are any sparse files. I’m not seeing any at least. The source is just a download location for qbittorrent so torrent files and the associated downloaded files. Do torrent downloaders create sparse files?

Usually yes, unless pre-allocate all files is enable.

Thanks. I’ll give that a shot then.

Is it normal for the root level directories on the btrfs pool to show up as shares? I'm not sure what to configure for "use cache" setting?

  • Author

Also, I can't set smb security to anything other than public. Can't change any of the share settings at all. That can't be right.

All top level folders on array or pools are automatically a user share and always have been. Any user share you haven't configured has default settings.

Diagnostics?

So should use cache be set to NO for cache pools?

There is no such setting for pools, only for user shares.

Since there seems to be some confusion on pools vs. user shares, I have to wonder which you were referring to here:

Your right. I worded that question badly. Maybe I'm just letting the name "Cache Pool" throw me off. Not sure what happens when mover runs if a share on the cache pool uses cache/

You have 60 .cfg files in the shares folder of those diagnostics. No way for me to know which are actually shares, and which are .cfg files for shares that no longer exist, without opening each. A screenshot of User Shares might be useful.

I tried to set security on the top level folder on the pool to private but can't change if to anything other than public. Same for the pool itself in the disk shares.

Mover only moves files to/from the pool the user share is set to use. The yes,no,only, prefer setting is the same as always.

"torrent" near the bottom is the only top level folder on the pool.

There is no security setting for folders, there is only security settings for shares (and for disks). Perhaps you meant you tried to set security for the user share.

I always recommend not sharing disks. There is more than one way you can make mistakes with that.

Yes. Tried for the share and for the disk pool.

I can't change it to export=no. When i click apply it is still set to yes.

torrent share is set to not use any pools. In fact, none of your shares are set to use any pool except the pool named "cache". I assume the pool named "cache" is not the one we are interested in currently.

I think you may have a problem because you have named the pool the same as a user share.

That might be causing Unraid a problem, but it would also cause SMB problems if you export that pool, one of the ways I mentioned
