When trying to copy some files over i got this error: I know this is because the file system has a limit of 4gb files, but how do i get around this? I cant find anyone else with the same problem. If this is something ive done wrong, how would i go about fixing it? Thank you.
January 19, 20224 yr Community Expert The obvious answer is to use a file system that does not have a 4GB file size limit it might help if we knew more about the drive you are trying to copy the file to.

Specifically, you may run into trouble with an error such as "The file is too large for the destination file system", when you try to transfer files larger than 4GB to a FAT32 formatted drive. I meant that i set up unraid using FAT32 drives, which in my opinion is improperly since it limits me to less than/equal to 4GB files. I was simply asking if it is possible and if so how to swap the format of the drive to something different without losing the data, what format is recommended, and anything else that could be helpful information. I do not think diagnostic information is required because i know what the problem is and am just looking for some input on how i would go about fixing it.

As far as I know there is no way to change the format keeping the data intact. As to what format is most suitable that does not have a 4GB limit it will depend on what systems you want to move the drive between. For example if it Windows and Unraid then NTFS is probably the most convenient to use.
