June 2, 201115 yr Every time unRAID is turned off with the power button or a power outage (we just lost power last night) it does not come back up. I have to turn off the server take out the USB key and put the 4.7 files back on and edit the go file to remove the cache_dir. ... crud and now that is not even working, why is this server so fragile, any change and it won't work... sorry this is getting frustrating I can't even provide a syslog because it wont get to a point where i can access it. As you can guess this is getting quite annoying. Does unRAID really have to be shutdown through the web interface every time it is shut down? if so this feels like a rather large downfall of the software. I am hoping I am wrong about this.

You are wrong, there should not be a reason to do what you are doing (i.e. copying files back over and the like). Now, with that being said... I have had a few hard shutdowns that have cause odd things to happen. Nothing likes to be shut down willy-nilly. There is something odd in your hardware, not with unRAID, that is causing you to have these problems. You probably need to get a battery backup in place so that the server can be shut down cleanly.
June 2, 201115 yr Does unRAID really have to be shutdown through the web interface every time it is shut down? Yes. Basically. If you don't shut it down properly, all sorts of nasty bad things will start happening. Nothing likes being shutdown without properly closing links to files, syncing filesystems, essentially trying to protect your data. If it's shutting down without warning, there could be issues with your hardware. You can try and hook the power button to a powerdown script so when you press the powerbutton it will shutdown safely. This should be in the Wiki. Also, get a UPS so your unRAID server doesn't die when there's a power outage. When it shuts down un-expectedly, it should start the array when it comes back up, but it will be running a parity check. If this isn't happening, best to email Tom about this, with unRAID version etc.
June 2, 201115 yr if so this feels like a rather large downfall of the software. Do you turn off your PC without shutting down? You can install to powerdown add-on via unmenu and then a quick press of the power button will do clean shutdown.
June 2, 201115 yr Personally I always shut my server down via the web interface just to make sure the array shuts down safely since well thats what it was designed for.
June 3, 201115 yr Author I guess I am used to windows and mac shutting down when i hit the power button. Thank you all for the advice. I am too tired to deal with this today, I will look into it this weekend. and yes a UPS would be a good idea.
June 3, 201115 yr I guess I am used to windows and mac shutting down when i hit the power button. I've done this a couple of times myself, but the one that really gets me is when I sit down at the unRAID keyboard and hit "CTRL-ALT-DEL" to get a login prompt... ouch! That starts an un-clean shutdown and on the next boot a parity check will have to run. I think I've installed the power down script to handle the power button issue and to allow my UPS to do a clean shutdown, but I'm not sure that will handle the CTRL-ALT-DEL shutdown. Stephen
June 3, 201115 yr Author still don't have time to work on this yet but I would be ever so greatfull if you could show me your go script that includes powerdown and ups data. I am planing on ordering a ups for my unRAID server so the power outage issue never causes this problem and once i get the go script i don't have to worry about this again
June 4, 201115 yr Author I installed the clean powerdown script from unMenu and restarted and the hit the power button and then it said my hard drives were not formated, luckily i have two licences so i just shut it down and put in the other stick and booted back up but obviously the power button did not do a clean shutdown of the system, what did i do wrong? Also I ordered a UPS
June 5, 201115 yr Author just quickly pressed it. well then after held it down to power off so i could put in the other OS USB stick.
June 5, 201115 yr You'll need to press it quickly and then wait until is shuts down. See this discussion on how to test if it will work: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=6078.msg58196#msg58196
May 25, 201214 yr Hi, is it possible to automatically shutdown the server at a configurable time point, e.g. every night at 11:30 PM ? Chris
May 25, 201214 yr Instal the powerdown script and issue the power down command using the at command in the go file. at 23:30 -f /sbin/powerdown
