Mylo75
Would the below hardware be good for a new unraid build. Will be running a windows vm (some gaming) , 1-2 plex users and maybe 12 or so docker apps. I'm no expert so if someone could give some advice that would be great. Thanks. Mylo75
Or do I need to go for a W680 chipset motherboard like the Gigabyte MW34-SP0 so I can get ECC memory support Edited September 5, 2022 by Mylo75 Quote Link to comment

Nevertheless, whenever I buy a server-grade motherboard with a Xeon processor (both my servers), I buy ECC RAM since I figure I might as well take advantage of what the MB/CPU combination supports. My main server is on 24/7 so I figure it can't hurt. There is certainly a price penalty to be paid for ECC RAM but it is not exorbitant. I would let the choice of the motherboard and CPU you think best meets you needs determine if you want to go with ECC RAM rather than deciding on ECC and then looking for other components that support it. Bottom line is that it a personal choice and not a requirement. Edited September 6, 2022 by Hoopster 1 Quote Link to comment
Mylo75
Thanks for the advice. I'm leaning towards using ECC memory, only problem is there aren't many W680 chipset motherboards. Asrock IMB-X1712 is another option. Quote Link to comment

Sadly I have not seen any indication that you can buy this Asrock board anywhere (at least not as a private consumer - maybe you can ask for a quote for 100 of them if you are a system integrator etc)... The same goes for the other W680 boards announced in Mars this year. The only W680 board I have found that can be bought is the Supermicro X13SAE...
