Mac Issues with UnRAID

Featured Replies

Having several issues with UnRAID on MacOS (Monterey)

1. VERY slow access times, even to read large directories.  I run a Windows VM on the same hardware, and it's not even a close contest.  At times accessing files and directories from the Mac Finder is almost unusable.

2. Sometimes shares cannot be accessed at all.  I create a directory, and then I try to copy a file to it, and it says no permissions.  Or, I'll save some files from an App (such as Photos) to that same directory, but Finder won't open it. (Red dot). Meanwhile, using the same UI/PW under Windows VM works just fine.

I typically connect to UnRAID over SMB.

How do I start to fix this?  (Am I the only one with these issues?)

One big problem was smb multi channel. Make sure its set to no in settings>smb and enhanced macOS interoperability is set to yes. Another possibility is entering this in smb extras-

[global]
   fruit:metadata = stream
   fruit:posix_rename = yes
   readdir_attr:aapl_max_access = no
   readdir_attr:aapl_finder_info = no
   readdir_attr:aapl_rsize = no

You will need to stop your array to change smb extras.

These settings have helped some users having issues.

This is a great start.  Thank you to both of you.

Seems better, but still really slow on folders with 1,000 to 5,000 files.  I'll keep reading those links.

Has anyone tried NFS mounts?  (I've never gotten them to work).  If so, is the performance better?

UPDATE:  THE vfs objects line was the magic sauce.  (I had a typo in that, once that was in there, bam)

I'm thrilled!  THANK YOU.

I am still running into issues, on 6.11.5.  client machine is M1 Max studio (Ventura) with 10gbe to switch to server.  I have entered all the smb settings from the two posts and still when I access a folder with lots of files or folders, the Mac basically network stalls.

Do any of the people that report that they have no or little problem with their Mac in accessing Unraid SMB also run some other SMB Client (not sure if it needs to be windows) on their network? I have the problem that my Mac besides being slow in accessing unraid SMB also looses the connection to the Unraid server and then seems to be unable to find it. As soon as I boot up my Windows Gaming PC the Unraid Server shows up in Finders Location and I can access the SMB share again. Is the Unraid SMB implementation maybe not advertising the presence of the share correctly or running into a timeout? Why would it show up in finder after I access it from windows but not before? I am running Unraid 6.12.6 and Ventura 13.7. Implementing the parameters from 45 drives have improved the access to the share but it is nowhere near compared to access from windows.

@MAT0LI  How SMB clients 'know' about the presences of a server on a LAN has always been a bit of mystery to me.   I do not profess to be an expert in the actual inter-workings of SMB/SAMBA.  I have always treated as a black box on which I perform probes and experiments while recording the results.

One of the problems is that most of us (using Unraid) are using the peer-to-peer mode-- Where any client computer can also be a server.  Plus with the demise of SMBv1, the Local Master is apparently gone and WSD (WS-Discovery) has replace it.  (GOOGLE   WSD (WS-Discovery)  if you want to find out more about it.)   So make sure that you have turned it on your server  (Settings   >>>   SMB  >>>  SMB Settings)   and check to see if there is an on-off option for it on your Mac.

Also establish a login (if you are not already using one) between your client and your Unraid server.  Accessing via a Public/anonymous login type session is not going to help things as you have to reestablish the connection every time you access the server!   (MS is going out their way to discourage/prevent any access to a server without a valid login to that server!)
