Prepping my server HDD's for transport

Featured Replies

Hello Cummunity

I will soon be moving and therefore want to make sure, that my drives are not damaged in transport.

I know most HDD's have the function to park there heads, so they do not damage they disks, if the HDD's experience a bump during transport. Only problem is, I have no idea how to check if the HDD's are parked in unRaid, or how to force them to do so. So does anyone know the procedure? Is it as simple as stopping the array or shutting down the system?

Furthermore are there any other precautions I should take when transporting my server?

BR Mads

HDDs haven't needed parking commands for decades. Anytime they're spun down they're where they should be.

Just avoid hits/bangs and vibrations in general.

I always take a moment to consider the CPU cooler when I need ship/transport a system.  Tower cases with a big heat sink and a couple of fans can pull loose and cause damage.  You can remove the heat sink and reinstall it later or find some way to secure it for transport.

Thank you both for your answers! I hadn't given any thought to the cooler before now.
