Air Video on Unraid over Internet

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am now using Unraid since a few months and very happy with it (v4.7).

As I start to add some new services to it I was wondering if the Air Video package available is able to provide me with Internet remote access to my movies. I have it working on my intranet but not sure how to configure it for remote usage, if at all possible.

Thanks for your help on this.

It is possible, but there are a number of things that need to be set up.  You will need a dynamic dns from a place like dyndns and you will need to port forward the correct port from the outside to the inside of your network.

Thanks Prostuff1.

Does it mean that it is "just" a question of network setting or is there something special to set at the airvideo server level (on Unraid)? On the Mac or Windows version you need to enable external access I think but do not know how to do it on  Unraid.

Should I forward the usual airvideo 45631 port?

Thanks!

I don't believe there is anything special that has to be done. save for setting stuff up through the router, but I could be wrong.

I WOULD NOT use the default port for airvideo.  It is a known port and opening it up could leave your server open in other ways.

I set up a pptp vpn on a router running dd-wrt. To use airvideo on an ipad I have to connect through the vpn first. Just another option if you have a router you can flash with dd-wrt. It may be a little more secure than opening a port.

Added benefit for the trouble of set up: remote access and management of my Unraid server/network as well.

I've been wanting to change the AirVideo port on my Unraid server but haven't found where to change the default port. prostuff1, can you you us with this? Thanks!

These are all great suggestions!

Summary:

If Air Video is already working on your LAN, then you need the following:

1. Port forwarding from the AirVideo server to the outside world, with a recommendation to use a non-default port*

  a. Some routers allow port mapping (i.e. public port X should be forwarded to private port Y)

  b. This can be modified in the config

2. Finding your home IP address from the outside world

  a. This can be set up with a free dynamic DNS service (i.e. http://www.dyndns.org) to automatically update a DNS entry to point to your machine (i.e. myairvideoserver.dyndns.org)

  b. *If* your connection is relatively stable, you can document your public IP address (http://www.whatsmyip.org) and use it directly

I'll also add the following:

*Non Default Port: This is one (of many) lines of defense against security vulnerabilities. Automated spidering tools and curious individuals scan the internet for open ports seeking vulnerable services ("internet facing 'server' programs") - running on a non-default port will protect you from many of these focused scans, but this is a "security through obscurity" approach.

Use a STRONG password and keep the software up to date: Since you'll probably only set up Air Video on a few different devices, *please* use a complex/long password. While you might not care if others gain access to your media content, a software vulnerability or weak password could give an attacker access to your entire server or other machines on your network.

VPN: This was mentioned above and has lots of plusses, but adds administrative and connectivity overhead. Overall, it's great for security and gives you a route into your home network for accessing web management tools, remote desktops, etc. If you have the time & ability, definitely check this out!
