Replace disk without power down?

Featured Replies

Is this possible?

I have added a new disk but in a different slot to the disk I want to replace. The wiki only explains how to replace a disk when you use the same slot: https://wiki.unraid.net/Replacing_a_Data_Drive

Is it possible by rep[lacing the faulty disk with one in a different slot?

I am replacing an old disk with a new one. Both are currently connected in the machine and the new one is precleared. What's the procedure for replacing a disk with a new one whilst changing slots?

I suspect you are using the word 'slot' differently than is meant in Unraid. This has nothing to do with where in the case a disk is installed (no way for Unraid to know that), or which port it is plugged in.

A slot refers to where a disk is assigned. You have to assign the replacement to the same slot as the original disk. For example, if you are replacing disk3 in the parity array, the replacement disk must be assigned as disk3.

If this doesn't clear things up for you, then try again to explain exactly what you mean.

I think it clears it up. So the disk can physically be connected to the mobo anywhere as long as "disk 3" in unraid is replaced by an hdd newly called "disk 3"?

Neither the name or physical location matter, just that if you had the previous drive assigned on the "disk3" line of the Main page then the new one needs to that same line replacing the failed one.

So I can just stop the array and change the assignments and it will start the rebuild on to the disk I choose?
