Civic1201 Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 I want to replace my boot device because: - USB 3.0 - slightly bended (happened when I moved the server) - sometimes it won´t be recognized in UEFI So I bought a new one from the recommended list: I have a new backup file from the "main" tab -> FLASH BACKUP Flash this file to the new drive, shutdown the server and replace the stick. Enter new key file URL -> DONE. Doing this will avoid headaches right? Array/services will start a usual? Is there any tool to pre-check the USB drive (if necessary)? Is it safe to use an extender like this (USB3.0) to secure the stick beeing damaged when moving the server: Thank you! Quote
trurl Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 Best way is something like this on a USB2 header on the mobo. https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Port-Motherboard-Header-Adapter/dp/B002GNU2V6 1 Quote
Civic1201 Posted February 25, 2023 Author Posted February 25, 2023 (edited) I have one of these adapters but it´s USB3.0 and I will lose the option to connect external drives to the side of the case. My bad this for the front USB 3.x I found this one: https://www.amazon.de/Cablecc-10-Pin-Motherboard-Adapter-vertikal/dp/B07YD444GC/ref=sr_1_31?__mk_de_DE=ÅMÅŽÕÑ&crid=1QVTMN7X0NVMG&keywords=2+Port+USB+Motherboard+Header+Adapter&qid=1677288164&sprefix=2+port+usb+motherboard+header+adapter%2Caps%2C68&sr=8-31 This will fit for my board right? trurl Posted February 25, 2023 Posted February 25, 2023 Most mobos have USB2 headers also, and you may not even want to use the USB2 header for anything else. Quote
Civic1201 Posted February 25, 2023 Author Posted February 25, 2023 I uploaded an overview of the board and a product that might fit. Quote

As long as there is enough space next to the bottom pcie slot it should work fine. I prefer the ones with a cable so it's not hard up against something, I use this type, and either screw it to a convenient spot inside the case, or bend up the metal to make it fit. Just because it's a slot cover bracket doesn't mean it's got to stick out the back. 1 Quote

I have the same USB drive. It's been reliable, also relatively cool running which seems to be a crucial factor determining failure rates. My theory is that the USB drive running temps might be influenced by its "demanded current" design - the lower the cooler. A metal casing should also add in heat dissipation making the Kingston DataTraveler even a better choice (if you can find one). https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-DataTraveler-Flash-KW-U4616Z02-8A/dp/B01N8XLPVY/ref=sr_1_16?crid=17B3TKTP604FZ&keywords=kingston+datatraveler+usb+2.0&qid=1677301904&sprefix=kingston+datatraveler+usb+2.0%2Caps%2C340&sr=8-16 You can "check" your drive with "USB Device Tree Viewer" which will detect and show your drive's demanded current specs. My Transcend and Kingston show 100 mA, so far the lowest number among other USB 2.0 drives I have. https://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbtreeview_e.html Edited February 25, 2023 by Lolight Quote

Civic1201 Posted February 25, 2023 Author Posted February 25, 2023 Ok I ordered one of these as it should be possible to store it inside the case: My procedure to prepare and boot from the new stick is safe? Array and services will start after the upgrade? Quote
