Is there a current guide for setting up a Windows 11 VM?

Featured Replies

After 30 minutes of searching, I can't find anything that actually matches what I see in the VM manager and I have no idea what options I should be choosing, nor which files to download to install Windows 11.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

This is my set up for the OS install you will need to download windows 11 image and select.

@arretx
I just wrote this guide on creating a Windows 11 VM with GPU passthrough on Unraid, I hope it helps!

You can refer to this simple yet comprehensive guide here to not only install windows 11 VM in unraid but also optimise it.

Just to warn people - this link takes you to a site that uses one of those "your system has been infected with a virus, click here to fix" scam popups.

Sure an ad blocker usually avoids them, but still. Not worth supporting scummy people with traffic.

I opened it in a private window in firefox, disabled ublocker and reloaded, but nothing popped up.

Are you sure your system isn't infected with something? It does have ads down the side when I turned of ublock, but nothing out of the ordinary I could see.

Do you have a link people can read without being hit with the popups and fake warning messages? Can't get to your actual guide.

That link is chock full of malicious garbage.  What happened to the actual guide?

I'm not sure. It was not our guide and unfortunately looks like a malicious site now.

@Aviral Pandey- what's going on here?

Thank you for providing a link to your guide. I was wondering if this method is still valid / necessary in 2024 and more specifically in the latest iteration of UR

Yep, this guide is still current. Newer Nvidia cards that 3000 series and above don’t need VBIOS dumps and the guide was updated with CPU optimizations for the hypervisor.

Thank you @N3z. Much appreciated.

So, dumb question.. the PC I plan on running unRaid on has an i7 processor which isn't WIndows 11 compatible. Will that matter if I install Windows 11 as a VM on unRaid?

You should be fine. I am running 3 WIN 11 VM's on an HP z820 without any issues. The ISO that I used came from Windows X-Lite.

I guess I will resurrect this thread, I am not sure what is wrong with these settings, but I end up in the UEFI console instead of it trying to install Win 11. Probably something stupid on my part, but would appreciate any guidance...

Set drives to sata. If you type reset at the prompt it may show press any key to boot from CD.

Would you like me to send you a screenshot of my WIN11 VM settings

@kesx Here you are. Let me know if you have any other questions. By the way, you can get rid of the Install ISO once you are up and running.
