A Buffalo NAS is normally a RAID system.  The Unraid array is not a RAID system-- hence the name!   (Google  RAID   for explanation of what a RAID system is.  There are many different configurations of RAID setup.  Each requires different number of disks configured in a specified manner.  )

As was said each drive in an Unraid system is a standard Linux file system that can be read on any system running Linux (even something small like a Raspberry Pi).    Buffalo is a bad example as it does not run a standard Linux.
