Shell prompt when trying to setup Windows 10 VM

Featured Replies

I am having issues setting up a new Windows 10 VM.

I am currently using spaceinvader's youtube guide and would like to make a windows 10 VM that I can use for a blue iris and surveillance server. I would like to passthough an unassigned disk (8TB WD purple) for this VM to sit on and use. The Spaceinvader video below seems to cover this but it's not working for me.

I'm just getting a shell prompt when I try to create the VM. This happens whether I try to use my disk as the Vdisk location, or if I leave it in default settings and just create the normal Vdisk. I've created Windows 10 VMs before, but for some reason, this time it's not working. I'm just getting the screen below:

I'm using the MediaCreationTool22H2 from Microsoft website to create the ISO, and I've used other steps to create the VM based off this video:

I've looked though the forums and have seen that others have had issues and received the same shell prompt, but they were attempting to install a 32bit version of the windows ISO. I've re-downloaded the ISO and I've also tried using an older windows installation ISO which I still had in my UnRaid ISO files from creating older VMs, but everything seems to get me to the shell prompt and then I'm stuck.

If any more information is needed from me, please feel free to ask and I will get it asap.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide!

Here is also a view of the settings I'm using to try to make a VM. I still can't figure out why this won't boot into windows setup.

Maybe change to SATA for the bus type on CD. It may be you just missed the press any key when at this screen type reset + enter and hopefully you will see press any key to boot from CD?

Thank you, SimonF!

I changed the "OS Install CDRom Bus:" to SATA and then made sure to press a key to boot from CD and it worked! I'm now setting up and installing Windows!

I tell ya, it's mistakes like these that humble you. I was doing all this while researching and I think the real problem was that I just wasn't pressing any keys at the beginning to boot from a CD. Thanks again SimonF for letting me know I'm a dummy sometimes! I hope you all have a good day!

Just another option... In the future if you miss the "press any key..."  message and the shell prompt loads.  You can also just type exit then hit enter.  It will then load a Bios looking screen and you just select continue and then it will restart and it brings you back to the "press any key..." option.
