Need suggestions to stream media files to iOS Clients

Featured Replies

I have been using AirVideoHD, which has a Docker, to stream video files to my iPad and iPhone.  These files can be TV shows that are currently airing live that are airing live and  they don't really fit into an app like Plex as Plex wants metadata.  I just want to stream a file from a folder on my media/tv share.

AirVideoHD hasn't been supported for years and has a few bugs from time to time.  And I am worried that it may stop working in future iOS releases.

Anyone have any other ideas.

Have you tried something like VLC that can play most video files directly off SMB shares.

I personally use inFuse to play files off my server but that does have a subscription cost associated with it.

Emby.

Hi - I too use an ancient install of AirVideo HD installed on a Windows server on my network to do just what you're doing. I'd like to decommission that server if possible. Incidentally I too just moved to Unraid for a lot of functions using docker and noticed you have a docker version of airvideo HD. Could you share more info on how you installed it? I looked in the Unraid app repo but cannot find it. Thanks.

Sorry I'm so many YEARS late to discovering this AirVideoHD docker. Just installed in Unraid and really appreciate it. Is it possible to add a device to the container: /dev/dri for Intel QuickSync transcoding if already using on Unraid server for Plex, for example?

Also what causes the Invalid Certificate errors? Sometimes they happen, other times they do not.

The obvious choice would be plex ?

Plex seems to need metadata to pull in shows. My main TV watching is sports and I use a PC based DVR (SageTV) to record content. Plex doesn't like Filenames like NFLFootball-LosAngelesRamsatSeattleSeahawks-29695429-0.mpg There have been some Plex (and/or Jellyfin) plugins to pull in sports but I have had issues getting them to work properly - not that I have tried recently.

Another option that I have occasionally used is VLC. With VLC you can browse to your Unraid shares and play files.

Sorry for the delayed response as I missed your post. Back when I installed AirVideo it was available through the Unraid Apps repository. I don't think it is there anymore. But you can manually create a docker, but I don't really know how to do that. The docker files seems to still be available here: https://hub.docker.com/r/dmaxwell/airvideohd/ and can be installed with:

docker run -d --net=host -v /mnt/user/appdata/airvideohd:/config -v /mnt/user/Media:/videos -v /mnt/user/appdata/airvideohd/temp:/conversionPath --name airvideohd dmaxwell/airvideohd

So if you can figure out how to add the docker manually it should still work. Good luck! If you get it working please post your results to help others.

Hi - yes, I was able to setup Airvideo HD in an Unraid docker. A little challenging but worth it. While I also use Pled, AVHD is quicker and simpler for media without metadata. However I’ve not been able to figure out how to enable Intel video hardware acceleration in the AVHD docker like you can with Plex. I noticed AVHD uses VLC which technically should be able to take advantage of it.

What's the use case for needing transcoding? When you are remote and have a slower upload speed?
