Change the default screen sleep time

Featured Replies

Hey Linux masters,

Does anyone know of a way to change the default time the monitor waits before it sleeps.  I have a monitor plugged into unraid through a KVM switch that I share with my mine craft server.  Sometimes when I switch back and forth between the computers on the KVM the monitor doesn't wake up.  I think this has to do with the KVM switch and sharing the keyboard.  I don't think linux likes it when the switch disconnect the USB keyboard.  So I would like to keep the monitor on all the time if that's possible. Just out of curiosity I was wondering if there was an unraid compatible screen saver. I know almost nothing about Linux but my server is in my living room and I thought hey why not have a screensaver. I know unraid is mainly used headless or quasi server enviro but my other server has a picture screen saver for the w.a.f.

Thanks

This sounds like a KVM problem.  A good KVM will not "remove" the keyboard when you switch to another PC - it will still appear as though connected to all PCs.  But keystrokes form the keyboard will only be sent to the active connection.

There's no unRAID screensaver that I know of.  Pressing a key on the keyboard should wake the monitor back up.  Always press an innocuous key such as the arrow keys.

you can try:

setterm -blank 0

setterm -powersave off

I always just use the shift key. Arrow keys will recall buffered commands.

Thanks for the suggestions. When I get home I will try Joe's recommendations. I am pretty sure it's a KVM issue. I have had two in the past and both times they were cheap Iomega ones. Every time I would switch computers I could here windows making the USB new hardware sound. That's what made me think this one was only running it on the active computer.

Thanks again!

I press and release the shift key since it's sensed, but never sends an actual keystroke that is interpreted/inputted by the OS.
