Upgrade to version 5 and what happens to data?

Recommended Posts

I read upgrade wiki to version 5 and some other posts, but one thing is not clear to me. What happens to existing data after upgrade? Is everything rebuild from parity or data needs to be moved first to some other disks before performing upgrade?

No need to move data or anything of that sort.  You just have to follow the upgrade instructions and your good to go.

I am running 4.7  and I have only one user (root), so I think setting permissions will not apply in this case.

You still need to run the New Perms script under the utilities tab

Since current 5.0 version is still in beta, If something goes wrong, can it in some way corrupt parity or data?

possibly, but quite a few people have updated (myself included) and not had any problems.

Thank you for your advice. My only concern at this point are Add Ons. Maybe that should be another topic. unMenu has a great feature, allowing install of packages on reboot. I do not know if this feature is still available or it will require writing some script?

should work just fine, I have been using it on a number of different 5.0bX versions.

Out of curiosity. Did you encounter any problems related to beta version? Excluding plugins and add ons.

The problems have been with some disk controllers... apparently some error when attempting to spin down a disk.  Apparently others do not spin a disk up fast enough, so disks time-out and are taken out of service when there is nothing really wrong with them other than they were spun down.

If you do not have a hardware issue, the beta series works perfectly fine.  If you do, it will be a headache.

The hardware issues are all because of difference in the linux kernel.  The later 5.0beta series are on a much newer linux kernel, with much newer bugs. ;)
