edit and final decision:

Thanks for your help. i decided not to buy it based on what was written. unraid can't be used with usb. also as far as i understand there is no support for the purchase, so if you buy it, you buy it, if you don't buy it, you don't buy it. good thing i wrote here.

Hello,

I'm new to this and I have something to ask before purchasing.

I wonder if it will work if I install it on the miniPC below? I will connect 2 SSDs and 1 HDD to this miniPC via USB.

Am I doing it right or am I doing something wrong that I don't know about?

It says Intel N100, 12gb LPDDR5 ram, 512gb M.2 2242 NVME SSD

USB not recommended for assigned disks for many reasons.

hmm thats bad.

i didn't know that and i'm not sure how to connect usb external disk to this Minipc. i guess unraid is not for me, or i can only use 512gb ssd.

USB is not recommended for 2 basic reasons:

  • On some systems USB devices tend to drop offline randomly.   Unraid does not handle this gracefully for drives in the main array.   Only the Unassigned Devices plugin  handles drives disconnection unexpectedly.
  • When using USB the SMART information is not always available to monitor a disk's health.

If your hardware does not suffer from either of these issues then you could well find using USB is fine.

then we can actually say “may not work”, not “will not work”.

Thank you for writing the detailed version of “not recommended”.

Like mentioned, USB is not generally recommended, but some users do use it without major issues, you can take advantage of the free trial to see how it works for you.

Thank you JorgeB

Here is my humble experience for 1~2 weeks running unRAID 7.0 Beta 2

I'm running QNAP TL-D800C enclosure with 8x12TB drives and ZFS at 93% usage, pushing 400mbit/s out just about NON-STOP. 0 drops of that enclosure or any of the drives. 0 errors from the drives.

On the other hand I have metric ton of issues booting the unRAID USB it self ( using Samsung BAR Plus drive in USB 2 port as recommended ), with the damn "waiting for UNRAID device to come online" or whatever is the message. Go figure...

My 2c.

I guess it's not worth buying for me.

I don't know what the deal with that user above is but I've never experienced any issues with any of the USB drives I've used over the years. Heck I'm still using a Kingston SD card reader in 2 of my servers in place of a traditional USB drive.

I'm going to chalk up his experience to an incompatibility with hardware (he's also using a beta version of the OS which in and of itself is suspect), something faulty, or user error. It does not reflect the overall experience by the community.

As for the OP, it doesn't sound like you're trying to build a traditional NAS, more like a mini PC that happens to have additional storage attached. Considering the hardware you've mentioned, yes unraid does not appear to be a good fit and I feel like you've limited yourself in your hardware choice. I would never trust a server that's supposed to be on 24/7 that's dependent on detachable storage let alone USB connections. What if a child/pet manages to unplug that storage while it's miduse? Feels like a recipe for disaster to me.

A SFF PC with enough space for 2-3 drives internally would be a better option but I foresee this being outgrown over time but that bridge can be crossed when necessary. Regardless, I do wish you check out unraid again in the future since it truly is a versatile option for a dedicated server at home.

Oh and as for the comment about no support; that's not true. This forum is extremely active and most issues are resolved very quickly.

I guess it's my bad luck that I haven't come across a supportive and informative person like you among the users of the unraid forum.

Accordingly, unraid was not a good choice for me, maybe in the future.

Thank you.
