February 17, 201214 yr I'm currently building my first advanced NAS server. I decided to go with unRAID. I also plan on running the plugins in my title. My current setup is: 1.6ghz atom cpu 2gb ram 4TB of space Are these specs sufficient? Or should I think about upgrading the server?
February 17, 201214 yr CPU is very under powered for a Plex Media Server if you are planning to do any transcoding on it. The recommended is Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz equivalent or higher for transcoding.
February 17, 201214 yr I agree with jamerson about the processor. You won't be able to do any transcoding with that, though you could probably serve media to a full client (Mac, Windows). SAB would also benefit from a beefier processor. With all those python processes running, I'd also recommend upping the RAM to 4 GB. My last build had an i3 and it worked great for running Plex, SAB, Sickbeard, and CP all at the same time. Pretty light power consumption as well, but not as low as an Atom.
February 17, 201214 yr Author I guess I'm gonna have to go with a different route. I have a 3 core AMD with 4GB ram. So I might have to use that, and forget about the power saving and fanless idea. Does the kernel or the OS use multiple cores for better benchmarks?
February 23, 201214 yr I bought an AMD Sempron 145, and was able to unlock the second core to reveal an athlon ii x2 4450e. It is about as fast as a core 2 duo and it has a 45W TDP. I am running sab/couch/sick, virtualbox (XP w/500MB ram), mysql for xbmc and digikam, and airvideo and the cpu handles it just fine with 4GB ram.

I highly recommend AGAINST overclocking/unlocking CPUs on your server systems. This is one of the dumbest and riskiest moves I see people doing. Since you're running unRAID, you're not willing to submit your data to drive failures, so why introduce something that's bound to introduce more problems and data instability than any possible benefits.
