Does that it have a serial to usb cable? It may still work if your server has a serial port.

Never got a working serial to usb cable

It will likely work, as apcupsd works just fine with serial connections.

However... the "serial" cable for it has a custom pinout.  Rumor has it APC forced you to purchase their cable (at a premium price)

If you use a standard serial cable I think I read it somewhere it just acts as if you lost power.  You must use the non-standard cable.

If you are handy with a soldering iron, you can make the cable.  The pinout is out there for googling.

Surprised a company forceing you to buy their cables ;-)

Apple, asus, most phone companies a few years ago. Thanks for ebay and knockoffs :-)

Apple

Um... Apple uses all "standards" adapters, save for the iPod dock connector.  The display port/thunderbolt port is a standard and can be bought from a number of different vendors.

What is mostly used or working best with Unraid? Serial connected or USB? Sorry, I am totally new at this. Nowadays many motherboards don't even have a serial port. Is there a working Serial/USB cable for Unraid/APC?

I think that this probably answers your question ... go for a UPS with USB port.  This is what works for me.

Is there a working Serial/USB cable for Unraid/APC?

Why complicate matters?

Hi PeterB, which UPS are you using? BK650? Is that a Back UPS or a Back UPS Pro? What run-time does it have when there is a power outage?

Is it comparable to this one:

http://www.t-online-shop.nl/apc-bk650ei-back-ups-cs-650va--1991/?categoryId=258 (In Dutch, sorry)

I think about getting the EU-version of this one:

http://www.apc.com/products/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=SMT750

Or would it be better to get the 1000VA version?

I plan to put another NAS on it too and possibly other devices (switch, router and so) on my LAN too.

It's the Back-UPS. I am not attempting to maximise the run time on battery power - what's the point when the TVs etc are off?  So I have the unRAID server, and one desktop computer, plus a switch running from the UPS, with the desktop shutting down after four minutes, the unRAID server shutting down after five minutes after which the UPS shuts down.  The UPS monitoring suggests that the maximum run time would be a little in excess of 15 minutes.

Yes, I believe that the difference between the version I have, and the EI, is the power connector type.

Errr.... that model is specified for 120V. You will need a 230V equivalent.

Edit: Sorry, I see that you say the 'EU-version of ....'.

Most domestic switches, routers etc use very little power.  You need to determine the current draw of the main devices in order to decide the appropriate rating of UPS.
