June 6, 201214 yr Uploading 8TB on a cable connection might make your ISP get a little hostile. Large uploads on a cable connection tend to "affect the speeds of other customers in your local area" according to the ISP. This is due to the way cable connections work (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_Internet_access#Shared_bandwidth). I can't offer much advice on rsync over WAN sorry as I haven't set this up myself, although I'm sure there are plenty of users here that can point you in the right direction.
June 18, 201214 yr OK, so i now have a second N40L server up and running. My question is still if i want to do a backup of my main server onto the second one 1. what is the best way to do this on the home network and what settings do i need 2. If i want to do this with the backup server located at a family members house how would this be done (or is it too much hard work and better to just mount the backup server in a different location in the house and work on the basis if the whole lot goes then i will have bigger issues that data. My critical stuff is uploaded to the cloud using sugarsync and a have an image of my main pc and pictures etc on a HDD kept in a safe (although that is at home as well - note to self - move the hard drive !)
June 19, 201214 yr I would start here, then you can search the forums for the word "rsync" and see what else comes up. rsync + unRAID http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/UnRAID_Topical_Index#rsync
