April 27, 201214 yr Here's where I get to show what a noob I am. I have the results in a putty screen. Now, how do I copy that information to a file to upload, or paste? Select the text in the putty window then copy and paste it into a post.
April 27, 201214 yr Author I feel soooo stupid. I tried that at first and the screen did some strange stuff. I got it now though..... root@Tower:~# ifconfig eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1a:92:e6:82:44 inet addr:192.168.1.4 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:96796723 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:15112708 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:1833630754 (1.7 GiB) TX bytes:1075299733 (1.0 GiB) Interrupt:42 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:60 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:60 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:8396 (8.1 KiB) TX bytes:8396 (8.1 KiB) root@Tower:~# ethtool eth0 Settings for eth0: Supported ports: [ MII ] Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Full Supports auto-negotiation: Yes Advertised link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Full Advertised pause frame use: No Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes Speed: 1000Mb/s Duplex: Full Port: MII PHYAD: 1 Transceiver: external Auto-negotiation: on Supports Wake-on: g Wake-on: d Link detected: yes
April 27, 201214 yr The connection looks good. Post a syslog after doing a large transfer to the server. I feel soooo stupid. I tried that at first and the screen did some strange stuff. I got it now though..... root@Tower:~# ifconfig eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1a:92:e6:82:44 inet addr:192.168.1.4 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:96796723 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:15112708 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:1833630754 (1.7 GiB) TX bytes:1075299733 (1.0 GiB) Interrupt:42 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:60 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:60 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:8396 (8.1 KiB) TX bytes:8396 (8.1 KiB) root@Tower:~# ethtool eth0 Settings for eth0: Supported ports: [ MII ] Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Full Supports auto-negotiation: Yes Advertised link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Full Advertised pause frame use: No Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes Speed: 1000Mb/s Duplex: Full Port: MII PHYAD: 1 Transceiver: external Auto-negotiation: on Supports Wake-on: g Wake-on: d Link detected: yes
April 27, 201214 yr This log reflects a large video and music transfer. Nothing stands out in the syslog. Was a disk rebuild occurring during the transfers?
April 27, 201214 yr Author No, nothing else was going on. All 5 drives had been precleared, signatures checked, two drives assigned to the array with no parity drive as per the suggestions on the wiki. I am now adding the parity drive and it is in the process of running Pariy-sync. The unMenu Network Performance chart showed between 17 and 24Mbps during those transfers. The drives are the WD enterprise black drives and they did extremely well during the preclear as best I could tell. When I tested the Gig network with LAN speed test, the results were awesome....that was between wired windows computers. I have not tried to run LAN speed test between a computer using windows and the tower. I don't know if it would work and have not tried to run it since I was busy getting the array up and running. Perhaps I'm expecting too much?
April 27, 201214 yr Author Finally got the parity drive up and running. The whole system is running very well, no errors on any of the drives. I ran LAN speed test with the tower, and it worked. The results show writing at 128.55Mbps (16.0 MBps) and reading 120.69Mbps (15.0MBps). When I run LAN speed test between this machine and another windows machine, I get 180.0Mbps writing and 225Mbps reading. I don't know why the difference. All machines have Gig capable NICs. Edit: I decided to try the test from a different machine to the tower.....results are : 469Mbps and 356Mbps. The good news is that the server is just fine....the problem is with the machine and connection that has the data I was loading on the server....so, one more thing to troubleshoot. Obviously, the server is working just great! Thank you guys again for all your help. Edit: After testing a known good cat5e on the 'slow' machine, the speeds were flying! I replaced the old cable, properly seated, and am now getting really fast throughput. I must have had a loose connection somewhere.
April 29, 201214 yr Author The Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe does not seem to run headless without a video card. Server has been running just fine for several days. No noted problems with 5.0 beta 14.
May 13, 201214 yr Author Update after living for a while with the unRaid build. The system has been running very well on this Asus board. I did add the Simple Features plugin and needed to tweak a little to get things to work properly. The plugin worked very well upon install, but the S3 WOL feature takes a little work. - Needed to add 'ethtool -s eth0 wol g' to the go script since the LAN eth0 report only shows Wake-on: b. - Simple features settings in Sleep mode include 'DHCP renewal after wake up'. - Use of the Depicus WOL script seems to require the use of MAC address, IP and subnet to get the machine to wake up. - Using the 'Force gigabit speeds on wake up' caused the board to wake up, but will not communicate with any machine. Disabling this feature seems to allow for normal S3 sleep and wake up. The good news is that this board works well for the unRaid box with a few minor tweaks. The kill-a-watt readings with my Asus video card are 100 watts with all drives spun up, 77.5 watts with drives spun down and 5.5 watts in S3 mode.
May 13, 201214 yr The kill-a-watt readings with my Asus video card are 100 watts with all drives spun up, 77.5 watts with drives spun down and 5.5 watts in S3 mode. i wish i saw this thread earlier since i am running the same board,, been running for year and half now, yea i tried running with no video card too, that was a bummer, what card are you running now, since you seem to be interested in your power consumption you might want to switch to a pci card since they will use less watts i ended up picking this one up for only 5 bucks http://www.ebay.com/itm/251019707697?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
May 14, 201214 yr Author A few days ago I installed the ASUS EAH5450 SILENT/DI/1GD3(LP) Radeon HD 5450 PCIe. It is overkill for the application, but it was picked for its low power consumption. Now that I can put the system to sleep reliably, it is a non-issue. Overall, the board has worked well for an unRaid box.
