Trouble booting X9SCM-F ??

Featured Replies

Situation is as follows

I have only the 24 pin power connector and the 8 pin 12V connector attached from my Seasonic X-760 to the X9SCM. When I switch on the power supply the green Power Standby LED is lit, I see a yellow LED flashing and a few seconds later the fan on the CPU starts rotating, after that the IPMI LED starts flashing. Is this OK? I  thought I would have to press an on/off switch attached to the Front Panel to start the motherboard. Or can this now be done through IPMIview?

maybe i am missing your problem because it is to early in the AM.

the board should only auto start if your power on after fail settings are such in the bios.

otherwise the power button or ipmi can start it.

I've had my X9SCM self start a few times without explanation, and one of those times was the first time I powered it up.  I turned on the switch on the back of my Seasonic X-660 and the whole thing started up (without any press of the front power button etc.)

It's probably something to do with the "restore last state" or whatever that setting is in the BIOS as Johnm mentioned, or perhaps if traffic hits the IPMI port, I'm not sure.  In any case, it's only done it on a few occasions and the server is on 99% of the time anyway, so I didn't really care.

This is normal. You can access and control via IPMIview.

Maybe I go to fast.

It is a new build. Motherboard has never been used, came in last Friday. On initial start-up do I need to setup  the BIOS first? With monitor and keyboard attached?

When I switch on the power supply the first time with only power-cables, IPMI lan-cable and Front Panel on/off attached, a yellow LED is lit (LE3) next to LE4 (also lit, green) and the CPU Fan starts and the stops, LE3 is out too now. I then press the on/off button on the Front Panel and the CPU fan starts but LE2 lights very faint. I also hear no beeps.

Am I overseeing something?

IPMIview finds the motherboard. But all sensors show N/A.

In IPM device the ACPI power state is S0/G0. The On/Off button shows On.

Sensors still show N/A (Voltages and System) , CPU Temp shows Low.

KVM console says no signal.

Is there any IPMIview confuguration needed?

Here's what I did with "new" motherboard.

1) connect power supply and LAN cables

2) switch on power supply

3) wait, yes, wait. The motherboard boots, BMC/IPMI gets running, gets an IP from DHCP, etc.

4) after at least 1 minute, maybe 2 minutes, hit the power button. The sound is more of a chirp than beep.

You can just use a web browser to the IPMI address, IPMIview is not required.

Doesn't the board beep at all during this phase.

I use the following memory:

Kingston

KVR1333D3E9SK2/16G

16 GB PC3-10600 CL9 ECC

I attached a monitor and keybord. No post, No video, nothing.

@C3, So just wait a couple of minutes and then power on?

  • Author

It might be RMA-time I'm afraid.

The board simply doesn't post. I tried C3s suggestion without result.

I also tried another PSU.

Any other suggestion?

List your full build.

especially PSU

It isn't a full build yet

So far:

Supermicro X9SMC-F-O

Intel Xeon E3-1240

Seasonic X-760

Kingston ValueRAM 16GB 1333MHz DDR3 ECC CL9 DIMM (Kit of 2x8GB)

No add-on cards yet: Just for testing, now out of case. Just anxious to see IPMI works and maybe installing ESXi.

Any help appreciated.

why do i have a strange feeling you got registered instead of unbufferd ram?

You got a part number on that ram?

everything else looks good.

I lean toward a memory problem too, but shouldn't it give a beep then?

Even without any RAM module I get the same behaviour.

I had the memory-spec listed already here:

http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=19910.msg177025#msg177025

This memory was listed as compatible on the sellers site.

Also on Kingston's Memory finder.

Is there a preferred or dedicated connector for the CPU-fan?

KVR1333D3E9SK2/16 is correct.

no on the CPU fan header. I would have to look at my build photos or pull mine out of the rack to tell you what one I used.

Maybe I could guess from my IPMI console.

Maybe there are still some compatibility issues with these sticks, because it is rather new?

Don't know what else can cause this behaviour.

I'll bet on the bent pin.

You scare me. Which pin?

Just wonder how this can happen. I'm extra carefull when placing the CPU in the socket and the cover was in place when I unpacked the board. I don't see me fixing this if this turns out to be the cause of this error.

Strange thing though that my X9SCM came in a X8 box. The anti-static bag was closed but not really sealed with a sticker. There was a cover on the CPU-socket. The box also wasn't sealed or shrink wrapped.

Got a message from Supermicro dutch support. Upto 5 bent pins are repairable free of charge. Socket replacement costs $75.

My X9 came in an X8 box as well - it's typical of Supermicro.  The adhesive label on the side should be correct though.

My box wasn't sealed or shrink wrapped either, and the board was just in a static bag.

could be. but I think that board beeps if you have no ram.

I assumed you tried one stick only..

Someone else had a similar problem last year. his problem was that his power supply did not meet the minimum requirements.

I will point out that the IPMI sensors all read ZERO until the board posts.

also the ipmi power reading sometimes says ON but the virtual light is OFF (grey) until a good power cycle.

When you have the PSU plugged in. do you have an IPMI heartbeat light?

  • Author

I tried 3 situations: 2 sticks, 1 stick and no RAM. No beep at all.

There is a IPMI heartbeat, will you get this too without CPU or if the CPU is bad?

I checked for bend pins in the CPU socket, couldn't find any.

It can also be as simple as faulty motherboard or CPU. How are the odds that the CPU is bad?

I have to decide what to RMA: Motherboard or CPU or both?

try contacting supermicro. they might help.

I did, contacted Supermicro America. This is the answer:

Dirk de Groote,

As you mention that did not install memory, hard drive and add on card on motherboard. Turn system on. No beeping coming out of chassis. You also try other power supply. Seem the motherboard is defective. Could you contact our RMA department for replacement.

Unfortunately here in the Netherlands it is a different situation. Can't RMA directly to Supermicro Europe (located in the Netherlands) but have to RMA to my retailer, he will go to his dealer and eventually it will reach Supermicro. My retailer doesn't have any stock at the moment.

Oh well, just my bad luck.

Just hope the CPU is ok.

Thats bad luck. It is pretty rare seeing a SM server mobo defective.

I have seen them get damaged with human assistance, but not from the factory.

I should have tried booting mine yesterday without ram when i had it all apart. see if I got beep codes.
