Migration to new Hardware

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,
I'm thinking of changing my base server Hardware (CPU/MB/RAM).

I would like to know if it's possible without too much headaches.

I have in mind two option:

OPTION 1:

- Change the hardware and fire it up like it's now

OPTION 2:

- Reconfigure the whole Unraid Server, but without loosing the data on my Array

If possible I would like to reconfigure as a brand new Server, since I made a lot trial and error in the years I had it, but I can't loose the TB of data on the disks.

Thanks in advance.

If you can, re-configure your current unRAID server and remove 2-3 drives.
Then build the new server (assuming you don't need any of the existing hardware in your current server) using those 3 drives (1 parity 2 for storage)
Install a 30 day trial of unRAID and move your data from the old server to the new one.
Once it's complete, transfer the license to the new server and then move the remaining disks from the old build to the new one.

This is what I did for my current build.

On another occassion I copied all my data to a QNAP NAS and then rebuilt the unRAID server from scratch then moved the data back. If you're willing to risk it... you could also just copy all the data to an external disk and then do the new build and copy the data back to it.

Whats about the containers and VM`s? Is there a way to move them easy to the new machine or do i have to setup everything again or is in the video from Spaceinvader1 still shown the right way?

I will have other harddrives in the new server and cant transfer the old hardware for transition. will it still work when i clone the old drives to the new ones?

What is a good way to make the transition?

Thanks for your tips!! )

Containers should all move fine, VMs may need adjusting if you are passing through any PCI devices.
