Forgot root password badly stuck !!!! :( [SOLVED]

Featured Replies

Hi All,

This is sam again after a long time, coz of a stupid issue. I had to go abroad for 4 months and I was back yesterday and I noticed when I started my Unraid NAS that I have forgotten my root password ... :(  :(  >:(.... I did a quick search on this forum here and found couple of articles that suggested to delete "passwd" file under config folder.

I stopped the NAS, unplugged the usb drive, plugged it in on another machine and deleted (basically cut) the passwd file under config folder. Rebooted the NAS, but I am still stuck with a credential prompt. Unraid wont let me in. Without my management console I cannot restart my array ..... any help friends .... I am stupidly stuck with this ....

Try 'root' as Login name and just hit the <enter> key for password.

Hi Frank,

Yes that was the first thing I tried as that was the default thing when I installed Unraid .... does not work .... :(

Still stuck ...  :(

I tried the "root" and "blank" password via telnet as well, does not work, says login incorrect .... :(

Hi sam9s,

"Cut" is not the same as delete. Check the flash again and either delete or rename the passwd file.

errrr I dont get it, its not on the flash any more. (checked and rechecked), I cut it and kept it on my other PC (to be safe). Do you want me to copy it again and rename it. Coz its not there, I am pretty sure about that.

However I noticed there is another files named, "smbpasswd", wonder if that also has to be removed .......

just know enough *nix to be dangerous, but think you might also want to remove shadow file also.

BTW, have you rebooted?

I know you have to remove it too.  It is where the actual password is stored.

I forgot entirely about it, earlier versions of unRAID did not use the shadow file.

Thanks Greywolf and Joe, removing the shadow file did the trick. Was able to log in. Created the root password again and I am back in business ..... thanks again , as usual you all were a great help ....

May I suggest changing the thread title to include (SOLVED).  That way people searching can get an idea of the thread is helpful (which it clearly is).  Glad you got the problem sorted - I would not have known if it had been me in your position..
