AirVideo Media Server Plugin for unRAID v5b11+ (Updated: 29-Mar-2013)

This might sound like a dumb question, but this won't work at all on unraid 5.0 RC4?

I developed and use the plugin on 5b12a.  However, I am struggling to see what a change in UnRAID v5 revisions could do to prevent it working.  Perhaps there are others who can verify if it works on later revisions.

In the meantime, please can you give an example of what doesn't work?

Thanks for the reply. I just got Airvideo on unraid 5.0 RC4 installed, as well as Java RTE 1.7.0_02 and it's not working when I try to connect via the full app on my ipad. I installed the JRE version I mentioned since I received errors when installing the JRE referenced in this post. I've had AirVideo server setup on my local Windows 7 box for awhile and running without issues. I have port forwarding on my router pointing to the IP of my unraid box and I'm using a custom port. I also have dyndns.org setup in my router and as I mentioned, the windows 7 air video server works fine.

I'm not sure what else I can provide here, but please let me know if I missed any detail. I made a new server in my ipad app, typed in my dyndns.org address and also my custom port, and I immedietely get server not reachable. Attached to this post is a screenshot of my unraid Airvideo settings screen.

What happens if you click the blue "Airvideo is Running" - which is also a hyperlink.  You should get a new web page up that just says "Air Video" on the screen.  Same thing should happen if you go to http://yourhostname:45631.

If it does, then it shows that the AirVideo daemon is running and listening and it's likely to be something else.

Try taking dyndns.org out of the equation.  Test this at first on the same lan as your UnRAID and not over the Internet or anything which is using NAT translation in your router.

Create a new server in the AirVideo ipad app and give it the ip address and port for your UnRAID server.  See if that works.  If it does, then you'll know it's something to do with the dyndns.org address.

One of the other things you can do in the AirVideo plugin is enable debug log.  Stop the service, enable debug log, start the service.  The part where it says "AirVideo is Running" will also have "(Debug Log)" next to it.  If you click it, it brings up a live output of what AirVideo daemon is doing.  Keep that running whilst connecting from your ipad.  If your client app is talking to the AirVideo process on UnRAID, then it will show up on the logs, perhaps that'll help point where the source of the problem could be.

For the record, I'm running the same Java JRE, so it's not that.

Thank you VERY MUCH for all of the details. I do see "Air Video" when I hit my unraid box (http://unraid:45631/), so it seems the daemon is going fine and listening.

I also just tried adding a new server in my ipad using the local IP of my unraid box (192.168.1.11), also typing in that port and I still get the error on my ipad "Communication Error" request timed out

And..responding to myself yet again...

I was able to get into the server on my ipad, by way of both the IP address and the dyndns.org setup I have. I'm not sure why, but my asus tower lists my unraid box as ip .11 on my network, but when I do a cmd > ping -a on the box, I get an ip of .13, so I changed tat around in the settings and in my port forwarding and all is well. I now get my password prompt when I go into the airvideo ipad app, as well as see a "movies" folder, but I see no movies. Probably how I typed my syntax in the airvideo web gui settings, so I'm trying to figure that out now...

Getting very close now, but still have issues.

here's where I'm at:

I have a total of 6 drives in my unraid box, the name off my main user share being "unraid". It seems for the moment, all of my movies reside on disk 3...

When logging into the ipad (either direct unraid IP, or dyndns.org), I enter my chosen password and...

I see my folders and my movies, and they play just fine when I have this within AirVideo File Locations:

Movies:/mnt/disk3/unraid/Videos/Movies

I see my folders, but DO NOT SEE MY MOVIES when I have this within AirVideo File Locations:

Movies:/mnt/unraid/unraid/Videos/Movies

I would imagine as my collection grows, these movies will span multiple disks. I shouldn't have to type in each disk and each sub-folder, should I?

pixelgraft, I'm glad to see you're sticking with it and nice to know you've made progress.

Regarding your folder structure; what you have doesn't make sense to me.  Surely you will have /mnt/user/someshare

It's pretty common for everything on UnRAID to either point to a disk or a share.  If disk then it's /mnt/disk{x}/foo or if it's a share then it's /mnt/user/share.  Perhaps I'm wrong (you've got me doubting myself now), but UnRAID is always going to have one /mnt/disk{x} for each physical disk in the array and /mnt/user/ where each share you have defined will reside.  Then if you have a cache you disk, you'd also see /mnt/cache/.

So, using your example movies folder, how is it you've got /mnt/unraid/unraid.  Did you mean to type /mnt/user/unraid by any chance?

You should not have to point to the disk number.  It works perfectly well when you are pointing to a user share.  So I suspect your Movies folder is wrong.

SOLVED!!!!

It was my syntax, so your explanation of disks vs shares.

Before (didn't work):

Movies:/mnt/unraid/Videos/Movies/

After (had to add the word 'user') and now works beautifully:

Movies:/mnt/user/unraid/Videos/Movies

THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Now I can get AirVideo off my local win7 box! The dyndns is also working perfectly.

Any ideas?

Just checked by doing a clean install of the plugin and it ran through without issue.

I notice in your text there's mention of v0.4 of the plugin.  The current version is 0.5 although both are still on my public dropbox so perhaps you picked up an old copy?  Saying that, I tried both a v0.4 & v0.5 fresh install and they both installed fine.

I'd suggest removing any version of the airvideo*.plg files you have on your flash in /boot/config/plugins + the airvideo sub-dir if it's there and re-downloading the 0.5 version of the plugin from the link in my first post.

How are you downloading the .plg and getting it to your UnRAID?  Perhaps something altered the file in the process?  Maybe also suggest you grab the file directly from your UnRAID so as to minimise the risk of corruption from browser download thru file transfer to your flash.

Do it from your UnRAID command line by either logging in locally at console or via telnet using a tool such as putty and then;

cd /boot/config/plugins
wget http://dl.dropbox.com/u/572553/UnRAID/airvideo/airvideo-0.5-i486-rj.plg

You should see something like;

root@EddieDEV:/boot/config/plugins# wget http://dl.dropbox.com/u/572553/UnRAID/airvideo/airvideo-0.5-i486-rj.plg

Sorry if I'm telling you stuff you already know, but can't think of much else to suggest.

I was having the same issues trying to installed the plugin within unmenu.  It just wouldn't work.  I followed your instructions and used telnet, and it worked like a charm.  I bought the Airvideo app for my phone ($2 dollars I believe) since the free one wouldn't show all my movie and tv shows at once.  This is a pretty nice app.  I got it working in my iPhone 4s.

I bought 3 iPads (children and wife's XMax gifts), and this app will come very handy.  Thanks.

  • 1 month later...

Please excuse me if this is answered elsewhere, I've been searching for weeks for an answer!

Having recently upgraded from 4.5 to the latest build I have installed Air Video and a few other plugins.

I generally turn of my tower when out of the house and on boot have to restart the plugins from the settings.

Is there a way to have certain plugins, in this case Air Video, to start on boot?

Well, it is actually supposed to re-install when you turn your server on automatically.  This is the thread I created about it.  I had to manually install AirVideo and install a JRE for it as well.  I've got to go to work so I don't really have time to write the steps I followed, but you should be able to do it from this thread.

1. how to enable it to auto start on every reboot, now I have to manually click "apply" to let it start

2. what is the min CPU requirement to enable smooth encode for mkv files for ipad?  I am currently using AMD 4850E, it seems still not powerful enough for ipad.

What kind of mkv? That should be good enough for 720p or possibly low bitrate 1080p video. Uncompressed bluray would be too much though.

To enable it to auto start on every reboot, you need to install JRE.  Make sure you install the 7U2 version.

wget -q -P /boot/config/plugins http://dl.dropbox.com/u/572553/UnRAID/jre7u2/jre-7u2-i586.plg

Moving my plugins to GitHub over the next few days.  Plan to add a network availability check, in-plugin update function and I'll finally add JRE too.

There are downloaded MKV, there are 480P or maybe 720P, it's very smooth when I use iphone, but unusable through ipad

I can stream 1080p high bitrate to my iPhone and iPads without any problems. You need a dual core CPU or better.

4850E is already dual core CPU, now I just changed it to Athlon ii X4 650 ( quad cores), it is able to smoothly convert these MKV files, but still struggling with 1080P AVCHD ( mts ) files.

All my movies are ripped as folder structure main mivie only m2ts file. I have a few ISOs.
