May 21, 201214 yr Hi, I followed many helpful posts and info to successfully build and configure my first unraid server a while ago. I use it to serve media to my htpc which has xbmc installed locally. All has been running well and I have had no disk errors. i have noticed however that recently I have had several messages within xbmc to the effect that it has lost connection with the server while trying to run a library update. Interestingly, I have never had an issue trying to play a file. Anyways... I viewed my syslog for the first time today (yes, I should have done this much earlier!) and see the following messages: May 21 19:57:31 Tower dhcpcd[959]: eth0: renewing lease of 192.168.0.5 (Network) May 21 19:57:32 Tower dhcpcd[959]: eth0: acknowledged 192.168.0.5 from 192.168.0.1 (Network) May 21 19:57:32 Tower dhcpcd[959]: eth0: leased 192.168.0.5 for 3600 seconds (Network) These message occur every 30 minutes. Is this normal behavior or do I have an issue that needs addressing? Thanks in advance and please excuse my lack of a clue as to how my unraid server really operates :-)
May 21, 201214 yr Also, if you configure unRaid to use Static IP, then you will not get those messages either.
May 21, 201214 yr Author Thank you both for your informative and speedy replies. I didn't worry about setting up a static ip address for my htpc as it's always on. Does the fact that the server has to release the lease every 30 minutes create potential for issues? Or I guess another way of asking that question is is a static ip config more optimal than a dynamic ip one? Thanks again. Chris
May 21, 201214 yr Dynamic IP Downsides: Increased network chatter. Potential disconnect if your server loses the lease (happens to be down) Having to remember the IP address (although it doesn't typically change) Clients (ie media players) can lose the server if the IP address changes Static: Upside: Known IP address (particularly helpful when using telnet/putty) No expiring leases. Required for most external applications Average lease time ~7 days, or set to a static IP.
May 21, 201214 yr I recommend setting a static IP reservation linked to the MAC of the network card on the router side, and leave the client on DHCP. You get almost all the benefits from the static IP column, and the only downside is the minimal network activity. The big positive in my book is the ability to centrally manage all your equipment's addresses from a single point. You really shouldn't need to have the lease renewal time set for less than 24 hours anyway on a small home network.
