New server keeps crashing

Featured Replies

Hey gang, I'm new here, and I would appreciate some help with my server please.
It's a new build, all brand new parts except the CPU. It's a AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core and it had a few bent pins, but we managed to fix them, and get the server going.
It was going fine for a few weeks, during the initial setup. I was able to perform multiple large data transfers that lasted for days.
But now, it crashes after a few hours. I even tried turning off all the docker containers.
Memtest is good, 28 passes no errors.
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

There are constant call traces logged, try running memtest, or since memtest is only definitive if it finds errors, and if you have multiple sticks try using the server with just one, if the same try with a different one, that will basically rule out bad RAM.

I already ran a memtest for several days, got 23 passes.

Alright yeah, I'm going one ram stick at a time, thanks!

So far so good, Uptime 1 day 7 hours 47 minutes with 1 ram stick.
Are there any other explanations other than either the RAM being defective or the board being defective?

  • Community Expert

Could be either, let it run for a few more days, then try a different DIMM

I seem to recall that several years ago, there were a few MB's that were very 'picky' about the RAM used to populate the slots. Particularly, if you were using more than one slot (or two) slots. So you might want to do a bit of research and make sure that the MB manufacturer does not recommend/require the use of specific RAM (manufacturer + P/N). And beware of over-clocking anything...

In addition to what Frank1940 said, check the motherboard manufacture's QVL to make sure the RAM you are using is on that list of memory.

I personally do not experience issues deviating from the QVL but you mileage may vary.

Running with a single stick of ram is still stable. I am now running on the second stick and it works. I'll check for compatibility issues.
