December 14, 2025Dec 14 I've recently started having trouble with my Windows 11 VM with passing through an AMD 9070XT. It was running fine for a few months and I was gaming with zero issues. Now, I can only get the VM to boot if I use VNC graphics. I can have the GPU attached and have it boot, but if I go with just the GPU I get a black screen on my monitors. Here are the things I have tried. Currently running 7.2.2.1. Booted into the VM and run DDU and then reinstalled the graphics drivers.2. Recreated the but using the same passthrough NVME drive and I get the same issues. 3. Tried both binding and un-binding the GPU in system devices4. Switched machine types, currently on Q35-9.2Not sure where to go next so any help would be awesome. Thanks in advance!

December 18, 2025Dec 18 Author I changed to 39 bits and no luck sadly. Here are some more things I have done. 1. Disabled the host frame buffer on the boot settings. 2. Bound the GPU so Unraid isn’t using it (I confirmed this worked as I no longer see the boot process for Unraid on the display)3. Verified I was adding the video and audio and had it set as multi-function. Still no display from the GPU at that point.4. I built a PopOS Linux VM and the GPU and monitor worked perfect in it. 5. Formatted my NVME drive and reinstalled fresh Windows 11 but still no video. 6. I added a dummy HDMI to the GPU but still nothing. Still no luck sadly.
December 18, 2025Dec 18 is this a pcie g card and on what motherbaord? amd/intel?You said AMD 9070XT but I need ot know if its gpu on the CPU or its own pcie card.second do you have proper IOMMU bios settings to pass cards lik this into VM.third is the devce VFIO ZPCI bound?what are your vm settings?windwos 11 is stricter with wdm drivers and you may need a adational qemu device option to pass to assit with gpu passing via softmod amdgpu in a modprobe and making sure the amd g card is reset for a VM as the amd reset bug still afects this model of cpu/gpu...
December 18, 2025Dec 18 Idealy you want:can be found via the info tab:with adational VM settings:then you want the g card vfio bound IT MUST BE BOUND AND NOT TOUCHED BY THE HOST to be corectly passed into a windwo VMexample this card is not bound to vfio (example only)*Not the kerneal driver in use... this needs to be vfio-pci!Example with nvidia... note all parts are vfio-pci (EXAMPLE ONLY!)so make sure your device is selected and vfio bound / stubed then me may want to assit the drive at boot to move into vfiosoftdep amdgpu pre: vfio vfio_pciin my example for my amd vega Since lspci -v says that my driver in use is amdgpu I would need to softdep a modprobe option to help devices enter vfio-pci.Other known gpu modprobe stuff:# AMD GPU#blacklist amdgpu#blacklist radeon#blacklist rivafb#blacklist rivatvso I would add: save and rebuild modules:then reboot..THEN AND ONLY THEN ARE WE ready for xml VM code to add the device into a VMSee as there are still some gotcha with unraid vms and asigning a pci device to a VM for passthorugh...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlTVANDndpM
December 18, 2025Dec 18 Author GPU is a standalone PCIE card on a ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. TUF GAMING X570 motherboard with a AMD Ryzen 9 5900X.I had it working in the past and haven't updated my BIOS so I think everything is good there.Ive tried it both bound and not bound with no difference.I just adjusted the additional VM settings as I didn't have those the same as you so Im rebooting now to see.
December 18, 2025Dec 18 Author Alright, I've followed all of that and still not working all the way. I do at least get something on the display now but not actual video.
December 18, 2025Dec 18 you have not configrmed tnor shared any data to reflect or go of of...Please post a diag file...whats the output of lspci -v for the amd card and its other comnents (hdmi audio)whatst the status of bound.then we can look at vm xml code then the widnwos enviroment as upstream is not correct I cna't help anything downstream.jsut becasue linux pop dets and use and see the gpu doen't mean its working. 2d vs 3d aceleration...

December 19, 2025Dec 19 Thank you for post a diag I was able to confim that vfio adn device binding is correct upstream thert are a few small edits I can recomend to the xml code.1 we can remove cputune and let unraid load balcne use 6 cores 2 threads. using cpu host mode.2. we need to test without the g-card bios rom (while recomend I have never needed one ) while usefull, it hurts testing to windows.3. lets use a lower version of q35 lets use 7.2 not lattest v9Here is a xml file for you to test.as unraid is using libvirt via domain xml: https://libvirt.org/formatdomain.htmlwe want to add some qemu options: <qemu:commandline><qemu:arg value='-cpu'/><qemu:arg value='host,+kvm_pv_unhalt,+kvm_pv_eoi,hv_vendor_id=NV43FIX,kvm=off'/><qemu:arg value='-device'/><qemu:arg December 20, 2025Dec 20 So what's the error exactly. As I have no issues on my end but ami also know the inner working or vfio/unraid and proxmox to get VM/qemu working....Is it displayed out scratchy? You clearly have some RDP that made a vdisply on card....What does device manger say? Is there a hard code? Or yellow !.What error?
December 20, 2025Dec 20 Author No error at all, either a black screen on the display or distorted like the photo above.RDP works totally fine that's how I get into the VM right now.Device manager shows the GPU totally fine.
December 20, 2025Dec 20 if you open windows display setting does it see another display? if yes then this is unraid spice/default vnc dispaly issues and teh amd gpu need to be marked the primary gpu...I'm usig prox vm example and use parsec to rdp adn instaleld a virtual display so I would see 2 and duplaict to assit rdp conection back to my passthrough device:
December 23, 2025Dec 23 Author I am only ever able to get it to show the VNC connection and a AMD VDisplay. I attempted to dump the VBIOS using the SpaceInvader script but it fails every time when it tries to wake the server back up from sleep.
December 24, 2025Dec 24 It sounds like you are having the same issue I was just having, or at least very similar. I recently removed a GPU so now I have only one GPU. Then it started acting up. I was able to get the VM to boot properly once. Either it would be on but never boot or boot with no video, as I could still hear it. I have an Nvidia card and it was showing Code 43 in device manager. So this may not work for you. I have my GPU passed through so the VM can use it directly. Eventually, I found the Linux framebuffer is touching the GPU before vfio binds it so the GPU no longer resets cleanly. I have not yet tried this but the permanent fix is to add to this to the append line in your syslinux:video=efifb:off video=simpledrm:off video=vesafb:offIn the Unraid webui, go to the main tab and click on your flash drive. At the bottom is your syslinux config. Again, I have not tried this yet myself because I have not found the time to restart my server. What worked for me without rebooting was to force the video card to reset. I made this script but you can just use the individual commands. Make sure and change the bus appropriately to match your system:#!/bin/bash GPU="0000:21:00.0" AUDIO="0000:21:00.1" # Always force FLR echo flr > /sys/bus/pci/devices/$GPU/reset_method 2>/dev/null # Unbind GPU + audio echo "$GPU" > /sys/bus/pci/devices/$GPU/driver/unbind echo "$AUDIO" > /sys/bus/pci/devices/$AUDIO/driver/unbind # Perform FLR echo 1 > /sys/bus/pci/devices/$GPU/reset # Rebind to vfio echo "$GPU" > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/vfio-pci/bind echo "$AUDIO" > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/vfio-pci/bind echo "GPU reset (FLR) complete."It looks like you may be somewhat familiar with it already from the previous troubleshooting but I'll explain a bit what it does. If you look at the output from lspci -vv for your GPU (include your bus like below), you will see what reset methods your GPU supports. It's a mess but it's in there somewhere under DevCap and DevCtl. Here is what mine looks like:root@Tower:~# lspci -vv -s 21:00.0 21:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation AD104 [GeForce RTX 4070] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd Device 40ee Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx+ Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=fast >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- INTx- Latency: 0, Cache Line Size: 64 bytes Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 305 IOMMU group: 49 Region 0: Memory at c2000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M] Region 1: Memory at a400000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=16G] Region 3: Memory at a800000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=32M] Region 5: I/O ports at 3000 [size=128] Expansion ROM at c3000000 [disabled] [size=512K] Capabilities: [60] Power Management version 3 Flags: PMEClk- DSI- D1- D2- AuxCurrent=0mA PME(D0+,D1-,D2-,D3hot+,D3cold-) Status: D0 NoSoftRst+ PME-Enable- DSel=0 DScale=0 PME- Capabilities: [68] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+ Address: 00000000fee00000 Data: 0000 Capabilities: [78] Express (v2) Legacy Endpoint, IntMsgNum 0 DevCap: MaxPayload 256 bytes, PhantFunc 0, Latency L0s unlimited, L1 <64us ExtTag+ AttnBtn- AttnInd- PwrInd- RBE+ FLReset+ TEE-IO- DevCtl: CorrErr+ NonFatalErr+ FatalErr+ UnsupReq+ RlxdOrd+ ExtTag+ PhantFunc- AuxPwr- NoSnoop- FLReset- MaxPayload 256 bytes, MaxReadReq 512 bytes DevSta: CorrErr+ NonFatalErr- FatalErr- UnsupReq- AuxPwr- TransPend+ LnkCap: Port #0, Speed 16GT/s, Width x16, ASPM L1, Exit Latency L1 <4us ClockPM+ Surprise- LLActRep- BwNot- ASPMOptComp+ LnkCtl: ASPM Disabled; If you run cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/$GPU/reset_method (make sure to sub the $GPU variable) it will show you what the current reset method it set to. Mine was set to flr bus, meaning it tries FLR, then falls back to bus (which mine doesn't support). So this script will set the reset method to just FLR, then unbind the GPU, reset it, and then rebind to VFIO without having to reboot. You might want to comment out the "Always force FLR" line first and just try the default method. Since your GPU is AMD, it might support other methods you can try as well. You just need to replace the flr after the echo in the "Always force FLR" command with another method that your card supports. I don't know what those would be but you can look it up if you need to. You don't need to worry about putting an invalid option and breaking things because if it doesn't support it or you put in an invalid option, it just will say it is an invalid option. For me, it didn't work the first time with the default method but it did when forcing FLR. Make sure the VM is off before you try this, then turn it on after and see if it worked.Another note that may make things easier. Instead of setting the GPU to VNC, use remote desktop. I find it makes things easier and you don't have to change your VM config back and forth while troubleshooting. Log into Windows, mount the virtio CD and install the virtio tools. Then when you start your VM, in the same menu where you start and stop it, there will be an option for remote desktop. The VM has to fully boot first so if you get an error just wait a bit, reload the page, and try again.
December 24, 2025Dec 24 One last note. In regards to the vBIOS, the extraction script can be tricky and painful. If you don't have an issue getting it online, go to https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/ and enter your GPU details to download it. Techpowerup is pretty trustworthy but I get that some people don't want to risk it. If you don't know your info, you can install GPU-z and click on "Lookup". I think GPU-z used to have a way to take you directly to the vBIOS page for your card but if it did, it doesn't now. You can also try saving the vBIOS using GPU-z but I'm pretty sure it won't work in a VM.
December 24, 2025Dec 24 The hook script would be what I would recommend as I'm fairly sure it's a issue with the cards and reset but don't have good data to explain and share how to do a hook script to reset the card. There are other things that can be added to syslonux grub boot but the baod, CPU and gcard didn't warrant the need of they used the mod probe...The qumeu extra arguments fixe nvdia and other code 43. Turns off windows force ejection and set up windows to be ready forvieturaled passed hardware.Sometimes a reinstall is needed after these edits due to how Windows boot kere al sees devices.I would definitely recommend the hook script. Unless the CPU doesn't have onboard gpu the the syslonux stuff is not needed. And again the bios dump of a gcard is not needed to pass. That help emulate parts for some interaction. Not required for what they are trying to do.The issue still stems from the GPU not being marked as primary due to the default vnc/spice.As the concern is that the gcard is picking up that a virtual display is made and thus the full card is acting as if the full hardware is not passed...Not enough info to assist either way.
December 24, 2025Dec 24 Author I attempted to run the reset script and it can't seem to run it. Here are my GPU devices and the logs from the script.
December 24, 2025Dec 24 Author I also used all three of the Vbios from techpowerup for my card and none of them helped.

Here are my GPU devices and the logs from the script.I had to double check to make sure I was using the correct terms but you have the wrong values for GPU and AUDIO in your script so it isn't finding them. It looks like you put 1002:7550 and 1002:ab40 which are the vendorID:deviceID I believe. You need the ones just to the right of that, with the leading zeros as in the example. For your setup, this is what you need:GPU="0000:0c:00.0" AUDIO="0000:0c:00.1"2 hours ago, Elembemedia said:I also used all three of the Vbios from techpowerup for my card and none of them helped. It may not be needed for this but it's good to know for future reference. Also, in line with what bmartino1 said, the VNC could further complicate things. It's best to remove it and only have the real GPU in your VM config. Edited December 25, 2025Dec 25 by bobbintb
